Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe analytically pesantren religious paradigm in North Sumatera, by tracing their teaching of Aqeedah, plurality, and jihad. The study focuses on two pesantren which are considered as the largest pesantren, they are MusthafawiyahPurbabaruMandailing Natal and RaudhahHasanah Medan. Quantitatively, both pesantren have more than 1000 entries, which come from various regions of Sumatera, and even outside it. The former was the oldest traditional (salafiyah) pesantren in North Sumatera while the latter was one of the earliest pesantren in which the system refers to the modernity of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The method is qualitative research. Interview, observation, and document analysis were used to collect data. This study has found that two pesantren educated their students with moderate values. It can be seen from: First, their Aqeedah teaching mostly refers to the theological school of Asy’ari and Maturity. These two schools of theology are considered as a moderate school by contemporary moslem scholars, and as majority school of ummah in Indonesia. Second, plurality according to them is a necessity. Moslem has to seek for peaceful co-existence and mutual tolerance between the people of different religions and cultures. Third, the term jihad to them is not only in a physical war but also in intellectual, against lust and doing creative work in society.

Abstract

Kata kunci: kritik, perguruan tinggi, budaya akademikAbstractEducation becomes political arena and it is not neutral. Because of education womb will create idealistic or pragmatic people, humanist or dehumanis, tolerant or intolerant, integrity or the critical integrity, and individualist or socialist. Education has a very significant role in the birth and form certain individuals. All of it depends on the basic philosophy and values on which educational institutions are built and what educational praxis developed. A social climate that is built on the campus, is part of the hidden curriculum which also contribute in shaping the personality of academic society. Current phenomenon shows that there is a conflict of interests between ideology in higher education, the contestation between higher education based on academic values (academic values) that tend ethical-utopian and based on the values of the corporation (corporate values) which tends practically. Ideology of interests in education is real conflict of the interests between idealism and pragmatism. Higher education is supposed to be part of the social institutions that contributed to the formation of ethical-democratic society. When higher education loses its critical reason, it was not able to be a lightening for the community, or become agents of social change. But on the contrary, higher education is getting away from the reality in particular society. Keywords: critic, higher education, academic culture

The research aims to know the implementation of WFH during the pandemic, the use of communication technology, the communication patterns during WFH have changed from face to face to Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), and the important factors for the success of WFH. A qualitative method with a descriptive case study approach and a semi-structured interview technique are used. The theory is media richness theory. The results showed that WFH offered advantages and disadvantages for employees and organizations. WFH featured various types of technology/media, from lean to rich. Communication technology plays an important role during WFH which causes changes in communication patterns. Different technologies/media vary in its ability to reproduce messages. During WFH, CMC creates a different climate than face to face communication, because CMC is not as rich as face to face communication. In implementing WFH, even after the pandemic, it is necessary to pay attention to the needs of organizations and employees and the main factors of successful WFH implementation so that WFH can be as effective as working in an office.

Abstract

This article discusses the political participation of new voters of WhatsApp users in the city of Medan in the governor election of Sumatra Province in 2018. The purpose of the study was to find out about the understanding of democracy and the level of political participation of new voters who use WhatsApp social media as a political discussion. Beginner voters are defined as community members who have the right to vote, aged 17-21 years or have/have been married and registered as a Permanent Voter List. In order to approach the research problem, this study uses the theory of public sphere and contagion. Public sphere is a digital space where critical, rational and objective discussion is transmitted to others. The problem in this study focused on how political participation of new voters who use WhatsApp in city of Medan in North Sumatra gubernatorial election 2018?. Can WhatsApp social media be considered a public sphere in the digital age? The results of the study show that the political participation of new voters of WhatsApp users has increased significantly but the understanding of democracy is co-opted in the politics of identity. Digital democracy is castrated by politics of identity because of the social situation, family environment, relatives and peers, the influence of the pulpit and the religious scriptures and ethnic communities. Then, WhatsApp social media is not a public sphere but 'mono sphere' or 'solo sphere' which is privatized as a limited discussion room with family, relatives, peers, friends of religion and ethnic friends.

Abstract

This research examines the underlying ideology(s) of a TV program called ‘Film Television’ (FTV). This TV program is on during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Specifically, using framing analysis and gender perspective approach as a methodology, this research analyses the ways in which these ideologies developed in FTV. Six prime samples of FTV were chosen, namely Laki-laki Buaya Darat, Cowok Gue IQ-nya Ancur Banget, Cowok Gue Pendek Bener, Pacar honorer, Ganteng-ganteng Medit, Pacar Gue Brondong. The findings reveal a thrust of twin-contrarian thrust of messaging. There are two embedded ideologies underlying the FTV. First, the FTV production house carries a patriarchal ideology by raising themes that discriminate against women through stereotypes against women that appear in the story. Second, the FTV production house carries the ideology of feminism, with themes that position women as super-ordinates. Women occupy a higher social class than men. This finding of twin-contrarian ideological thrust offers an important contribution to the gender theoretical vacuum of Indonesian TV as an example of Asian teen romanticism in national TV programming during a global crisis.  It has conceptual implication on the repertoire of social science knowledge, especially sociology particularly research on womens body and beauty, sociology of gender and media, and sociology of family.

Abstract

The background of this research about environmental problems, such as loss of soil fertility, depletion of groundwater, river pollution, waste management, seem to be a phenomenon that is happening right now. Human dependence on nature is increasingly critical, but it is not balanced with an awareness of environmental preservation. The purpose of this research is to find out and describe the construction of women's ecological sustainability in Jember. This construction includes water management, power management, transportation use, and waste management. This study uses a qualitative method with interviews as a data collection technique. The informants of this study were selected from six villages in Jember, namely Karangrejo, Antirogo, Tegalgede, Kalisat, Sumbersari, and TegalBesar villages. This study uses a purposive method, especially housewives whose activities relate to these indicators. The results showed that women had limited knowledge construction about ecological sustainability. This construction develops based on daily experience and individual knowledge of the ecological preservation models around them. Therefore, household waste is often found scattered in the ecosystem.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the traces of the two national figures, Mohammad Hatta and Sutan Sjahrir during exile in Banda Naira. Both are warrior figures that are difficult to forget in the history of the nation. But their popularity was barely revealed during their exile in Banda Naira. In fact, the legacy of their thoughts and role models is needed to respond to the crisis of leaders who have morality and integrity for Indonesia, and at the same time respond to the challenges of the global era. This paper based on the results of qualitative-historical research, using a phenomenological perspective, especially on the narratives of everyday life of Hatta and Sjahrir in exile Banda. The results of this study indicate that Hatta and Sjahrir were both patriots and educators even they were far away in exile. They built an "Kelas Sore" for Banda children, teaching the values of everyday life, including; religious-ethics, self-integrity, and nationalism. These values are become valuable exemplary for todays young generation, and especially for the people of Banda Naira. This paper concludes, that Hatta and Sjahrir are the most consistent socialist role models in struggling and educating the people for sovereignty, and for a truly independent Indonesian nation

Abstract

This article examined the impact of participatory video (PV) technique in (re)educating rural dwellers on Corona virus (COVID-19) at Iva-Valley Forestry Hill Camp 1, Southeast Nigeria, with a view to generating data that could be tested or extrapolated elsewhere. It used historical-analytic, key informant interview (KII) and direct observation methods to argue that the COVID-19 pandemic/period has exposed weaknesses immanent in human institutions globally. One of such exposed interstitial gaps is the seeming weak media-link in the rural areas. This situation results from lack of electricity, non-access to reliable locally-generated news by resident community members and the lack of know-how to use mobile phones to generate media contents. Rural dwellers constitute 49.66 percent of the total Nigerian population (National Population Commission [NPC], 2018), yet media focus in Nigeria is mostly urban-driven. Having interacted and co-created a video script in Igbo with the community members through PV to determine the level of (mis)information that has permeated the community and (re)educated the rural dwellers on Corona virus and strategies to prevent its spread, the study canvassed the use of indigenous languages, diversification of media and PV techniques in the dissemination of credible information on COVID-19 in Nigeria, particularly at the grassroots
