Abstract

The shift from print to digital reading has posed new challenges for students, requiring them to navigate non-linear texts, evaluate multimodal information, and read reflectively. Although Discovery Learning has proven effective in enhancing comprehension, limited research has explored its integration with constructively responsive principles for digital reading. This study investigates student responses to a Discovery Learning model grounded in Constructive-Responsive principles at Universitas Kuningan. Using a qualitative case study design, 32 fifth-semester students from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program participated in four instructional sessions. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically. Findings show that students responded positively at each learning stage, with strong engagement during the stimulation and data collection phases. They displayed autonomy, metacognitive awareness, and strategic behavior through digital annotation, source evaluation, and collaborative synthesis. However, difficulties arose during the verification phase, particularly in assessing the credibility of sources. Overall, the model was well-received and viewed as effective in supporting digital reading comprehension. The study provides valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers seeking to promote digital literacy through responsive, student-centered instruction.

Abstract

While media portrayals of autism have been widely studied, limited research has examined how the agency of non-speaking autistic individuals is constructed through multimodal storytelling and mediated communication. This study examines how nonverbal autistic agency is portrayed in the Netflix documentary "Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World." Grounded in multimodal literacy theory, the study employs qualitative methods and thematic analysis to examine how the film frames Makayla’s communication and self-representation across text, audio, and visual modes. The analysis also draws on agency theory to examine how autistic agency is represented, and it applies the social model of disability to explore how the film challenges or reinforces societal discriminatory attitudes toward autism. Findings reveal a complex portrayal: the film affirms Makayla’s agency through poetic narration, metaphor, and visual imagery, yet simultaneously mediates her voice through facilitator involvement and selective editing. These strategies contribute to a process of narrative idealization, in which a story is smoothed over to enhance a character’s positive qualities. The study contributes to critical literacy by demonstrating how media can both empower and constrain the voices of non-speaking autistic individuals. It also calls for more nuanced and ethically grounded representations that recognize diverse communicative practices and multimodal literacies.

Abstract

Idiomatic expressions are an essential component of language, often used in literature and music to convey complex emotions and abstract ideas. In the realm of contemporary music, particularly pop lyrics, idioms play a crucial role in enhancing expressive depth. However, there remains limited research on how idioms function within modern song lyrics. This study aims to analyze the use of idiomatic expressions in Taylor Swift’s song “Dancing with Our Hands Tied” to explore how figurative language contributes to lyrical meaning. Addressing this gap, the research employs a qualitative method, collecting data through close observation, including repeated listening and textual analysis of the lyrics. The idioms identified were analyzed using Seidl and McMordie’s classification framework. The findings reveal 22 idiomatic expressions categorized into nine types, including key words with idiomatic uses, idioms with nouns and adjectives, idiomatic pairs, idioms with prepositions, phrasal verbs, verbal idioms, idioms with special subjects, idioms with key words from specific categories, and idioms with comparison. These idioms are shown to reflect emotional tension, love, and inner conflict. The findings suggest that Taylor Swift effectively employs idiomatic language to convey the emotional complexities and nuanced experiences associated with love, thereby enhancing the expressive power of her lyrics.

Abstract

Political rap battles have evolved into a form of digital communication that combines entertainment with socio-political criticism through the strategic use of expressive speech acts. This is important to publish because it represents a transformation in contemporary political communication that utilizes popular culture to reach a wide audience, especially the younger generation who tend to be apathetic towards formal politics. Although the popularity of political rap battles in Indonesia continues to rise, a significant gap remains in understanding their linguistic characteristics and pragmatic functions as a medium of digital political communication. This study examines the forms and functions of expressive speech acts in four popular rap battle videos from the YouTube channel SkinnyIndonesia24, employing a descriptive-analytical qualitative method. Data consisting of 80 utterances were analyzed based on Austin-Searle's speech act theory to identify six expressive categories: criticism (50 utterances), pride (22 utterances), anger (2 utterances), disappointment (2 utterances), praise (2 utterances), and apology (2 utterances). The findings indicate that expressive speech acts function as rhetorical strategies to convey ideological messages through the use of irony, hyperbole, and sarcasm. This study has important implications for the development of digital literacy and the understanding of contemporary Indonesian political communication, demonstrating that rap battles are a legitimate and influential space for political articulation in shaping public discourse.
