Abstract

This study aims to analyze changes in the morphological, agronomic, and physiological characteristics of rice plants in response to a decrease in soil water potential. The study was conducted through a literature review of various relevant and credible scientific journals. The results indicate that a decrease in soil water potential (kPa) is closely associated with the level of drought stress affecting rice growth and productivity. Water stress reduces plant height, the number of tillers, and leaf area index (LAI), and increases leaf rolling as an adaptive mechanism. Physiologically, there is a decrease in relative water content (RWC), impaired photosynthesis, increased spikelet sterility, and reduced grain filling. These impacts become more significant during the reproductive phase. Therefore, water management based on soil water potential thresholds is crucial for maintaining sustainable rice productivity.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical properties of soil in melon cultivation land under chemical fertilizer use in Lam Manyang Village, Peukan Bada District, Aceh Besar, Indonesia. The research used a survey method with descriptive analysis, including soil sampling, laboratory analysis, and data processing. The observed parameters consisted of soil pH, organic carbon (C-organic), total nitrogen (N-total), available phosphorus (P-available), exchangeable potassium (K-exchangeable), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The results showed that most soil chemical properties were classified as very low, with C-organic ranging from 0.28–0.72%, N-total from 0.05–0.15%, P-available from 0.70–3.00%, and exchangeable K from 0.08–0.19 cmol kg⁻¹, while CEC was categorized as low (10.40–13.60 cmol kg⁻¹). Soil pH values ranged from 5.23 to 6.60, indicating acidic to neutral conditions. These findings indicate that continuous reliance on chemical fertilizers without organic inputs may lead to a decline in soil chemical quality. Therefore, integrating organic amendments and balanced fertilization strategies is necessary to improve soil quality and ensure sustainable melon production.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of coffee variety and postharvest processing methods on the quality of Gayo Arabica coffee. The research was conducted at the Horticulture Laboratory and the Seed Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University, from December 2025 to January 2026. A factorial randomized block design with a 3 × 3 arrangement and three replications was used. The first factor comprised three Gayo Arabica varieties (Gayo 1; Gayo 2, and Gayo 3), and the second factor comprised three processing methods: wet, dry, and honey. Observed parameters included weight loss, moisture content, pH, caffeine content, color (L, a, b), and organoleptic properties (color, texture, aroma, and overall acceptance). Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by the least significant difference test at the 5% significance level. Results showed that coffee variety significantly affected weight loss, moisture content, color a and b, and sensory texture, aroma, and overall acceptance; variety had a highly significant effect on caffeine content. Processing method significantly influenced weight loss, moisture content, and color b, and had a highly significant effect on caffeine content, but had no significant effect on pH or most sensory attributes. Dry processing produced the greatest weight loss, while the honey process resulted in the lowest weight loss and the highest caffeine content. All treatments met the Indonesian National Standard for moisture content. Gayo 3 exhibited the best sensory quality, particularly in aroma and overall acceptance.

Abstract

Shallot productivity in Aceh Province remains below the national average, primarily due to low soil fertility, drought stress, and high rainfall that exacerbate disease incidence. Biopriming with plant growth-promoting microbes (PGPM) offers a sustainable strategy to enhance crop performance by establishing early mutualistic interactions during seed germination. This study was conducted from August to November 2024 in Paloh Batee Village, Muara Dua District, Lhokseumawe, using a non-factorial randomized block design with three treatments: biopriming of shallot bulbs with Trichoderma harzianum, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Rhizomax (a consortium of Rhizobium sp., Bacillus polymyxa, and Pseudomonas fluorescens). Growth parameters (plant height at 15, 30, and 45 DAS), bulb traits (number, diameter, fresh and dry weight), and the percentage of plants affected by Fusarium wilt disease. Results indicated that biopriming significantly improved plant height at 15 DAS, bulb number, fresh and dry bulb weight, and reduced disease incidence. The most effective treatment was biopriming with Trichoderma harzianum, which consistently enhanced growth, yield, and the percentage of shallots affected by Fusarium wilt.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various paitan compost (Tithonia diversifolia) dosages on the growth and biomass of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora L.) seedlings and to determine the most effective dosage during the nursery phase. The research was conducted from March to June 2026 at the Experimental Farm of Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Payakumbuh, West Sumatra. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments of paitan compost dosages, namely 0, 100, 120, 140, and 160 g/polybag, each replicated five times. The parameters observed included seedling height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight. The results showed that paitan compost significantly affected the number of leaves, leaf length, and fresh weight of seedlings, but did not significantly affect seedling height, leaf width, and dry weight. The highest number of leaves was obtained at the dosage of 120 g/polybag (10.07 leaves), while the highest leaf length and estimated leaf area were obtained at the dosage of 140 g/polybag, reaching 17.21 cm and 76.20 cm², respectively. The highest fresh weight (1.83 g) and dry weight (0.7440 g) were obtained at the dosage of 100 g/polybag. Dosages of 120–140 g/polybag tended to enhance vegetative growth, whereas 100 g/polybag was more effective at increasing seedling biomass. Based on biomass parameters as indicators of seedling quality, the dosage of 100 g/polybag is recommended for robusta coffee nursery. Paitan compost has the potential to be utilized as an organic nutrient source to support the sustainable growth of robusta coffee seedlings.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the primary staple food crop in Indonesia and plays an essential role in supporting food security. The cultivation of rice varieties with poor adaptability often leads to reduced productivity. Therefore, evaluating superior rice varieties under specific agroecosystem conditions is necessary to identify those with strong growth performance and adaptability. This study aimed to evaluate the growth performance of 10 irrigated rice varieties grown under agroecosystem conditions in Central Tapanuli Regency. The experiment was conducted using a non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Ten rice varieties were evaluated: Inpari 30, Inpari 32, Inpari 42, Inpari 43, Ciherang, Mekongga, Cigeulis, Padjadjaran, Cakrabuana, and Siporang. Observed variables included plant height, number of tillers, leaf area, and flowering age. The results indicated that rice variety had no significant effect on plant height at 20, 40, and 60 days after transplanting (DAT). However, significant differences were observed in the number of tillers at 60 DAT, leaf area at all observation periods, and flowering age. The Siporang variety exhibited superior vegetative growth, producing the tallest plants (116.16 cm) and the largest leaf area (71.00 cm²) at 60 DAT. Meanwhile, Inpari 43 produced the highest number of tillers (48.58 tillers hill⁻¹). These findings suggest that Siporang and Inpari 43 exhibited superior growth performance and may be considered promising varieties for cultivation under the agroecosystem conditions of Central Tapanuli Regency.
