Abstract

Sustainable development for nation building is not a new concept to Islam, sustainable development principles have existed for centuries in the Glorious Qur'an and the Hadith. However, sustainable development concept may have been recently adopted for government and civic society in Islamic world. The Islamic thought embraces that everything on earth is created for humanity and Allah's award to people. Islam allows the consumption of the natural environment without involving unnecessary destruction. Islamic thought views that human activities should support environment, and protection of people’s rights, and needs ensuring that human activities do not compromise the essentials of social, economic and natural systems either now or in the future. The aim of this study is to discover the application of Islam in sustainable development debate. Sustainable development in the context of Islamic concept is taken as an opportunity to refresh the relationship between human being and the nation building. This paper will also discuss the role of transparency and accountability in building good governance. With Iḥsan and Taqwa based on Iman, people can control, manage and report their actions, although there are no punishments or responsibility questions from others. The principles of transparency and accountability in the Qur’an guarantee social control and report, wide public participation, kind public service, self-honest, self-control and self-responsibility so that various forms of distortion such as corruption or discrimination can be avoided and controlled.

Abstract

Spending huge amount of money during wedding ceremony among Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups who are predominantly Muslims in Northern Nigeria is a new phenomenon. There is a change in the trend at which potential husband and wife spend ostentatiously at pre and post wedding events to impress the friends, relatives and the general public. The study adopted a Theory of Conspicuous consumption by Thorsten Veblen to explain the behaviour of some bride and groom in spending money to impress others. Methodologically, qualitative data were elicited from ten IDI with some newly wedded couples in Kano and Katsina metropolises. The study found that in an attempt to demonstrate one’s social and economic class in the society, some people spend money uncontrollably during their wedding or that of their children or relatives. The result further showed that the essence of the wedding spending is not to impress the couples but it is targeted at the audience, spectators or guests at the wedding which contravenes the teachings of Islam which admonish Muslims to be modest in all their social interactions and activities. The paper concluded that spending huge amount of money during wedding deter young people from getting married which leads to delay marriage among people of child bearing age in Kano and Katsina. This is rampant because the neglect of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Benediction of Allah be upon him) in wedding rites.

Abstract

Pluralism cannot be separated from the meaning of plurality, if plurality is a difference in religious, ethnic, cultural or other issues, while pluralism is a system of values, attitudes and processes that can translate religious reality into sustainable social cohesion. In other words, diversity is something empirical, while pluralism is an ideology or understanding that accepts diversity as a positive value accompanied by efforts to negotiate and adjust among them, without trying to weaken or even destroy one or part of that diversity. The existence of a difference in religion is a reality in society, and a pluralist attitude is an orientation that assumes acceptance and sincere relationship to that fact, rather than eliminating or destroying or melting the differences into one. This type of research is library research (Libary research) The results of this study collected that: According to Nurcholish Madjid, the noble values of Indonesianness are universal and cosmopolitan values of the Indonesian nation based on religion or culture as a result of a long dialogue with religion, these values have a strategic role as well as a central role in building the unity of the people to foster self-esteem as a nation. The issue of the relationship between religion, citizens and the nation is a matter of ijtihad that is closely related to the socio-political contacts understood by the people themselves.

Abstract

Basically, human rights in Islam are centered on five main things which are summarized in al-dloruriyat al-khomsah or also called al-huquq al-insaniyah fi al-islam (human rights in Islam). Every human being has basic (fundamental) rights that cannot be revoked and relinquished simply because of differences in race, skin color, religion, gender, language, politics, nationality, and other statuses.
