Abstract

This article emphasizes power relations and gender equality dynamics in resource management in the artisanal oil mining sector of South Sumatra. Michel Foucault’s perspective on knowledge and power is used to explore how power structures that change women’s roles emerge as a result of livelihood shifts from rubber farming to artisanal oil mining. The descriptive qualitative study with live-in assisted in the process of interviewing and observing a number of artisanal oil miners as well as women in Dusun Tue, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Historically, women were active and equal in economic activities based on rubber farming. However, the emergence of artisanal mining has seen women’s roles gradually excluded from productive spaces, especially at mining sites due to perceived “taboos”. This exclusion is part of a power strategy that produces gender inequality through normalized social norms. Nevertheless, a critical analysis perspective helps to see the uniqueness of various forms of power and resistance and women’s agents to resist such discrimination. Even though they are excluded from mining sites, women remain involved in mining activities through mining partnerships, scavenging for oil spills, and even determining well-drilling locations through the ritual of “meniduri tanah”. Women also play an important role in local economic empowerment through micro, small, and medium enterprises, thus continuing to contribute to family and community livelihoods. This study illustrates that power is contested in various contexts. In artisanal oil mining, the relationship between men and women reveals not only structural inequality but also the process of women’s struggle over their role in the local economy. Hence, this study provides an important perspective on the role of gender in resource management in the informal sector. Further, economic changes not only increase gender inequality but also enable empowerment and resistance strategies.

Abstract

Ethnic Chinese are spread throughout the world, including in Indonesia. They have long been part of the diversity of the Indonesian nation, even before independence. The presence of the Chinese community in Indonesia has been integrated significantly and is considered an integral part of the identity of the Indonesian nation. The aim of this research is to find out how ethnic Chinese are stereotyped in the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at and to find the meaning and signs used by the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at in presenting Chinese ethnicity. The approach used is communication sociology with the theory used to solve this research is semiotic theory. The object of the research is the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at, which is an Indonesian film produced and broadcast in 2015 with a duration of 95 minutes. The method used in this research is a qualitative method using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique. The results of the research show that there are several scenes depicting Chinese ethnic stereotypes in the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed At. The character Ernest in this film is depicted as a character who often experiences unpleasant treatment or bullying in his environment. There are scenes where Ernest is clearly called derogatory names such as "Chinese", reflecting the differences in cultural background between Ernest and those around him. This film also breaks the stereotype that exists in society, that ethnic Tinghoa/Chinese descendants are deceitful, stingy and want to win for themselves. The Chinese ethnicity in this film is described by Ernest Prakasa that not all Chinese descendants have the same characteristics as society's perception of Chinese descendants.

Abstract

Multiculturalism in Indonesia embodies a complex social framework rooted in colonial history, ethnic mobility, and cultural pluralism. Pasar Gede in Surakarta serves as a crucial site for interaction among various ethnic groups, particularly the Chinese and Javanese communities. These interactions, however, are often challenged by economic disparities and social tensions that can disrupt urban cohesion. Previous studies have primarily focused on multiculturalism through normative frameworks or governmental policies, overlooking the importance of local collective practices. This study aims to identify the factors contributing to cross-ethnic social harmony in Pasar Gede and to explore how social cohesion practices are passed down among diverse trading communities. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research examines spatial distribution, inter-ethnic accessibility, and the daily activities of market participants through field observations and interviews via snowball sampling. Findings reveal that Pasar Gede operates as a communal space managed collectively through informal negotiation and local norms. This study emphasizes that governance based on collective local experiences is more effective in promoting sustainable multiculturalism than top-down approaches. It contributes meaningfully to discussions on spatial studies, ethnic relations, and social cohesion in urban public settings.
