Abstract

Abstract Religious extremism is an attitude of interpretation of religion that is carried out textually without involving the context of a plurality of other religious views. Religious attitudes like this often give birth to social friction that leads to horizontal conflict. Therefore, a paradigm of religious moderation is needed to anticipate this. In the paradigm of religious moderation, there is tolerance behavior as an indicator. Theoretically, tolerance behavior is influenced by two psychological factors: religious schemes and empathy. This research aims to prove and explain religious schemes and empathy for tolerant behavior in the Ambonese community in Maluku which experienced horizontal conflict in 1999-2002. This study is an ex-post facto research on 72 subjects who are Protestant Christians (22.2%) and Muslims (77.8%) living in Ambon. Based on multiple linear regression analysis, it shows that there is an influence of religious schemas and empathy on tolerance behavior (p = 0.000; p <0.05). That is, religious schemes and empathy can simultaneously encourage individuals to behave intolerant towards others. The results of this study are expected to become recommendations for policymakers that form tolerant behavior can be done through the formation of religious schemes and empathy for others from an early age.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims to uncover the role and consistency of the Tarekat Islamic Boarding School in the development of Islamic intellectual tradition and religious moderation in Indonesia. This research simultaneously answers two major problems faced by the Muslim community today, namely the decline of intellectual tradition and the erosion of awareness of religious moderation, both of which have long been established. This research utilizes Terror Management Theory analysis with a case study of the Tarekat Islamic Boarding School, named Roudhoh Al-Hikam, located in Cibinong, Bogor Regency. The study collects data from two sources, namely primary data obtained from field observations and interviews and secondary data obtained from books and journals. The results of the study show that, firstly, the Tarekat Islamic Boarding School consistently promotes the distinctive Islamic intellectual tradition in Indonesia, namely by implementing and developing an Islamic education curriculum based on the Shafi'i school of thought and Asy'ari-Maturidi theology, sourced from the yellow book. Secondly, the kyai or mursyid plays a significant role in the success of education in Islamic Boarding School while also cultivating a mindset of religious moderation. Thirdly, the Tarekat Islamic Boarding School contributes to the emergence of new Islamic Boarding School, or educational institutions, established and developed by its alumni. Fourthly, the Tarekat Islamic Boarding School plays a role in the discourse of religious moderation by consistently teaching Islamic ethical values that safeguard and protect students from deviant religious understandings.

Abstract

Religious conflict has been something that fills Nigeria’s plate in the past decades. The palpable terror and suffering the conflicts have brought are undeniably dangerous for both the state and the people. Given the intricacy and immense impact the religious conflict has, the article seeks to shine a light on this particular problem in Nigeria. The article provides its findings through the qualitative research method that utilizes data gathered from previous research, media coverage and other sources. The article touches upon the ongoing, what is at stake over the issue as well as the available means to face the issue. It is found how the numerous atrocities that take the guise of religious reasons can be caused by other issues like poverty, the presence of political entrepreneurs and other manure piles as well. On the second point, the risk of having the problem spreading to neighboring states along with the conflict’s overall exacerbation. In the third point, the government may resort to means like securitization of the issue and keep up its effort in running interfaith dialogue and collaborating with foreign partners. Abstract

A substantial amount of literature on conservative, liberal, and moderate views in Indonesia has been flooded with qualitative case studies. In contrast, this article discusses how Muslim political elites view Islam, democracy, and modernization in Indonesia by dichotomizing their socio-religious and political views divergently. Socio-religiously, it could be attributed to how they respond and practice their religious beliefs, such as prayer, performing five-time worship, reading the holy Qur'an, rejecting homosexuality, and interfaith marriage. Politically, it can be observed by how they respond to democratic citizenship equality, minority leadership, economic liberalism, Israeli-Palestinian issues, interfaith marriage rights, and the protection of LGBT. This article employed a qualitative study and conducted in-depth interviews with five Muslim political elites in Indonesia and consulted secondary data sources. In light of the convergence of Islam, democracy, and modernization, Muslim political elites in Indonesia hold a socially conservative but politically liberal viewpoint since they have to moderate their positions to please Islamic and nationalist voters within political liberalization. It causes them to rely not only on religious issues but also on good governance matters. This new trend in Muslim political elites’ views could impact people's perceptions by constructing a culture of liberal democratic models that are constantly changing and modifying, particularly in the Muslim world. This article could be beneficial for further research at the local and national levels or even be advanced to a quantitative study to contribute to the development of the modernization theory thesis in the Muslim world.

Abstract

The ideology of the caliphate is being intensely discussed in the Indonesian Muslim community, following the appearance of the Khilafatul Muslimin (KM) convoy that invites to welcome the emergence of the caliphate. This study focuses on examining the response of Muslim youth in Solo to the ideas of the caliphate, which are widely mushrooming in the mass media, especially in the Kaffah bulletin, one of the bulletins that disseminate the caliphate ideology on various platforms. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method, which provides descriptive data from the analysis results on the Kaffah in as many as 256 editions. The data collection technique used in this research is critical content analysis, interview, focus group discussion, and documentation. This paper argues that Kaffah has successfully promoted and mobilized young people to be attracted to the idea of the caliphate because they could neatly package religious doctrines with the hot issues being discussed. However, in brainwashing the public through the pamphlet, Kaffah is frequently questionable, quoting dhaif hadiths, distorting opinions, and utilizing fake news to support statements propagated by their affiliates.

Abstract

The recent human crises in the world caused by believers of the same religions fighting amongst themselves— such as Muslims in the Middle East and Christians in the recent Russo-Ukrainian War—have once again raised the question of the function of individual conscience (the ability to distinguish bad from good) in society. How can individuals judge what is good or bad when religious communities of same faith confuse the judgment of the religion’s followers by accusing others of wrongdoing while proclaiming themselves to be right? Would a conscience enable individuals to assess the moral quality of their thoughts, words, and deeds without being affected by society? This paper attempts to answer these questions by conducting a comparative analysis of the concept of vicdân (conscience)—the Turkish and Persian equivalent of the English word “conscience”—in Christianity and Turkish Islamic thought, and concludes that, although every individual is endowed with a conscience as a potential faculty, it must be discovered and cultivated by the individual through intellectual effort and represented in the society (collective conscience) in order to function as a righteous judge distinguishing good from bad and right from wrong in difficult times.

Abstract

Differences in opinion among Muslims, commonly known as ikhtilaf, are the theme raised by the film Bid’ah Cinta. Through the plot analysis proposed by Tzvetan Todorov, it can be seen that the conflict in the movie is in the middle plot two Muslim clerics’ different opinions about Qunut, Maulud Nabi, and Nisfu Sya’ban. At the beginning of the film plot, the life of the people is still balanced. However, the conflict occurs in the middle one of the plot. In the final plot, conditions return to balance. Each character has agreed to remain harmonious amidst these opinion differences. This study uses qualitative methods to investigate every scene in the film. These scenes show a picture of ikhtilaf and the community’s responses to these differences. This study aims to show that differences of opinion in Islam, as depicted in Bid’ah Cinta film, will raise social conflicts if they are not wisely solved. This film conveys that fellow Muslims must accept differences and maintain good faith to create harmonious relations in the community.
