Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini berbicara tentang penguatan moderasi beragama berbasis kearifan lokal sebagai respon kampanye Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia tentang moderasi beragama yang telah berlangsung sejak 2019. Moderasi beragama bertujuan untuk mencegah sikap, pemahaman, dan tindakan yang eksterm dari setiap agama, seperti intoleransi, kekerasan, ujaran kebencian hingga terorisme. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, tulisan ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dan pendekatan etnografi, dengan mekanisme pengumpulan data menggunakan studi pustaka, observasi, dan wawancara mendalam. Data yang dikumpulkan akan dianalisis dengan cara reduksi data, penyajian serta penulisan kesimpulan, dan verifikasi. Hasil kajian etnografi tersebut menghasilkan unsur toleransi yang terkandung di dalam tradisi pangngan, antara lain: Pertama, tradisi pangngan mengedepankan sikap toleransi. Sikap tersebut merupakan sebuah hospitalitas yang menghilangkan sekat-sekat sosial, seperti perbedaan agama dan golongan yang ada. Kedua, tradisi pangngan menghilangkan rasa curiga terhadap yang diberi atau menerima pangngan walaupun berbeda agama atau golongan. Hilangnya rasa curiga yang terbentuk pada relasi tradisi pangngan menjadikan hubungan antara satu dengan yang lain menjadi harmonis. Kedua unsur teologis inilah yang kemudian menjadikan tradisi pangngan sebagai salah satu sarana moderasi beragama berbasis kearifan lokal di Toraja. Abstract This research sheds light on strengthening religious moderation based on local wisdom in response to the Ministry of Religious affairs of the Republic of Indonesia’s campaign on religious moderation since 2019. Religious moderation is aimed to prevent extreme attitudes, mislead understandings of religious teachings, such as intolerance, violence, hate speech, and terrorism. This is a descriptive qualitative research based on ethnographic approach. Data were collected through literature review, observation, and in-depth interviews. These were analyzed through data reduction, categorization, conclusions, and verification. This study found that pangngan tradition shows attitude of tolerance. This attitude was shown in a form of hospitality that removed social barriers, such as religious and social-class differences. In addition, the tradition enabled to minimize suspicion. Suspicion was dismissed through food sharing. These two elements of pangngan tradition has been evidence of religious moderation based on local wisdom in Toraja.

Abstract

There have been many studies on Ahmadiyya and their involvement in inter/intra-religious dialogue. However, some of these studies only look at how the dialogue takes shape or tends to be formal. Ahmadiyya, which is a vulnerable religious group, certainly needs a new model of dialogue or encounter. This article assumes that "mutual collaboration in public issues" can be an encounter space for interfaith dialogue for religious groups, especially for minorities. From this, this research aims to see the strategy of the Ahmadiyya community in Yogyakarta to be able to engage with society and also see the inter/intra-religious dialogue model used by the Ahmadiyya community in Yogyakarta. To answer these questions, this research uses qualitative research methods. Furthermore, this research takes data through the interview process and literature obtained from Ahmadiyya online media and then analyzed using descriptive and interpretive analysis techniques. This study found that the Ahmadiyya community uses environmental issues to have dialogue with other religious communities and become a space for encounter and acceptance in society.

Abstract

This article seeks to chart the outcomes of empirical research on religious moderation within the family. The issue behind this research arises from the dearth of publications that accentuate the findings of empirical studies in this domain. The primary objective is to comprehend previous discoveries and lay the groundwork for subsequent empirical investigations into the theme of religious moderation within the family. Employing the scoping review to achieve the research objective, this research explicitly targets empirical articles concerning family religious moderation. The literature search on Google Scholar focuses on publications spanning the past decade (2013-2023). The selection of literature adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Following these guidelines, 18 articles were chosen for comprehensive review. The results of the research polarise on three key themes, including religious moderation within the family, fostering tolerance and non-violence values, as well as religious moderation education. Although the existing empirical research about religious moderation remains limited and widely open for further research, it can be concluded that it  forms the foundational bedrock for cultivating robust and tolerant relationships within the family.

Abstract

Indonesia and Tunisia offer distinct cultural, political, and educational environments related to religious moderation, despite having predominantly Muslim populations. The two nations' divergent approaches to religion show their attempts to take a moderate stance. Focusing on the dynamics of modern educational standards, the paper examines the nuanced policies employed by the two nations to encourage religious moderation in their educational systems. This study utilized a qualitative method by conducting interviews, literature analysis, and taking a few key points from formal events pertaining to this subject. By contrasting the experiences of Tunisia and Indonesia, this study seeks to clarify the different strategies for promoting religious moderation and fostering a friendly, inclusive learning environment. The main result of this research is that Indonesia inserted religious moderation into its' educational curriculum. Unlike the state policies in Tunisia, which don't make a specific curriculum about religious moderation in the educational aspect but make some conferences and forums related to this issue. The research findings contribute to the global conversation on harmonizing religion and education.

Abstract

Indonesia's rich religious diversity, epitomized by the concept of "Unity in Diversity," presents both opportunities and challenges. This study delved into religious moderation across Indonesia's six recognized religions, Islam, Christianity (Catholic and Protestant), Hinduism, Buddhism, and, Confucianism, defining it as a commitment to tolerance, inclusivity, and critical thought within religious contexts. In addition to these six religions, Indonesia is unique in recognizing the existence of diverse indigenous beliefs according to different tribes and cultures. Through a literature review, the study revealed that religious moderation varies across different faith communities, yet remains crucial for fostering peace and harmonious coexistence. Interfaith initiatives, religious institutions, and education were identified as key factors in promoting religious moderation. The study concludes that embracing the diverse expressions of religious moderation is essential for building a more inclusive and harmonious Indonesia, where “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” transcends rhetoric to become a vibrant reality.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali nilai-nilai budaya yang terkandung dalam tradisi berbagi cimplo dan dampaknya terhadap dinamika sosial masyarakat Cirebon. Dengan menggunakan metodologi etnografi, penelitian ini mengkaji proses pembuatan dan distribusi cimplo melalui observasi partisipatif dan wawancara mendalam dengan sepuluh narasumber yang memiliki latar belakang sosial dan profesi yang beragam di Cirebon. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan perangkat lunak NVIVO 12. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tradisi berbagi cimplo merupakan ekspresi dari rasa syukur masyarakat terhadap keberlimpahan alam dan sarana untuk mempererat hubungan sosial, mewujudkan perdamaian, serta mempromosikan nilai-nilai positif seperti permintaan maaf dan kebaikan. Lebih dari itu, tradisi ini juga sarat dengan konotasi spiritual, dimana masyarakat percaya bahwa praktik ini dapat menghindarkan mereka dari musibah atau bencana yang dikenal dengan tolak bala. Dalam konteks pelestarian budaya dan pengaruh globalisasi, tradisi berbagi cimplo berperan penting dalam mempertahankan identitas lokal dan memperkuat ikatan sosial di antara masyarakat. Implikasi dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman mendalam tentang nilai-nilai budaya yang terkandung dalam tradisi ini dapat berkontribusi terhadap penguatan identitas lokal dan pembangunan karakter kolektif masyarakat Cirebon. Abstract This research aims to delve into the cultural values embodied in the tradition of sharing cimplo and its impact on the social dynamics of the Cirebon community. Employing ethnographic methodology, this study examines the processes of making and distributing cimplo through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with ten respondents from diverse social and professional backgrounds in Cirebon. Data analysis was performed using NVIVO 12 software. The findings indicate that the tradition of sharing cimplo represents an expression of the community’s gratitude for nature's bounty and a means to strengthen social ties, foster peace, and promote positive values such as forgiveness and kindness. Moreover, the tradition is laden with spiritual connotations, where the community believes that this practice can protect them from misfortune or disasters, known locally as tolak bala. In the context of cultural preservation and the influence of globalization, the tradition of sharing cimplo plays a crucial role in maintaining local identity and strengthening social bonds among the community. The implications of this research suggest that a deep understanding of the cultural values embedded in this tradition can contribute to strengthening local identity and the collective character building of the Cirebon community.

Abstract

This current study examines how the local wisdom of Sasak aristocrats can enhance moral education in pesantren. This study focuses on utilising indigenous wisdom by the Sasak aristocrats to enhance moral education in pesantren. This study employs a qualitative approach with a research design centred on the case study. The study was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Selaparang in Kediri, West Lombok, and was chosen for its unique expertise in utilising advanced Sasak language and cultures. Data collection is carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. This study employed the interactive analysis technique proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which includes data collection, condensation, presentation, and conclusion drawing. This current study demonstrates that moral education is strengthened through the noble Sasak local knowledge at Pondok Pesantren Selaparang in Kediri, West Lombok using several approaches: 1) Implementing Sasak Alus language in Islamic lectures at pesantren; 2) Providing role models; 3) Establishing habits through daily routines; 4) Conducting speech training (muḥāḍarah); 5) Organising speech competitions; 6) Engaging students in social, cultural, and religious events. This current study contributes to enhancing moral teaching in pesantren by theoretically and practically incorporating local wisdom.

Abstract

Building religious moderation can be done in various ways, one of which is using local wisdom values. Local wisdom values can be implemented in learning in madrasas. This research was conducted at MTs Mambaul Ulum Bata-bata 1 to analyze local wisdom values used in building religious moderation, and efforts to build religious moderation using Madurese local wisdom values. A qualitative method with an exploratory descriptive design was used in this study. The informants of this research were teachers and students of MTs Mambaul Ulum Bata-bata 1 who were selected purposively. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Source and time triangulation is used to see the validity of the data. The results of the study show that (1) the local wisdom values used to build religious moderation are the Pesantren tradition and the Toron tradition. (2) Efforts to build religious moderation are carried out by using the local wisdom of the pesantren, the culture of the madrasah, the exemplary clerics and teachers, compiling learning tools, and incorporating local wisdom values as PPKn subject matter. This research implies that religious moderation can be built with local wisdom values. This entire article can be used as a reference for further research by identifying exemplary forms and the application of religious moderation values by students in the community.

Abstract

Abstrak Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana penerapan filosofi "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" mempengaruhi kehidupan sosial, budaya, dan agama masyarakat Minangkabau, serta bagaimana konflik antara hukum adat dan syariat Islam dapat diselesaikan. Pertanyaan penelitiannya mencakup: Bagaimana filosofi ABS-SBK diimplementasikan dalam praktik sehari-hari? Apa saja tantangan dan peluang dalam menyelaraskan adat dan syariat Islam di Minangkabau? Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis filosofi "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" (ABS-SBK) dan implikasinya dalam konteks sosial, budaya, dan agama masyarakat Minangkabau. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif melalui studi kepustakaan yang berhubungan dengan penelitian. Berdasarkan analisis, ditemukan bahwa filosofi "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" berdasarkan sejarah, evolusi, dan dampak membawa pengaruh dalam kehidupan sosial, budaya, dan agama masyarakat Minangkabau. ABS-SBK sebagai kerangka kehidupan sosial yang menggabungkan nilai-nilai Islam dengan adat istiadat setempat. Namun, terdapat tantangan dalam pemahaman dan implementasi filosofi ABS-SBK, terutama dalam konteks pemerintahan daerah Sumatera Barat, seperti adanya konflik yang membutuhkan upaya dan usaha dari masyarakat Minangkabau untuk menanggulanginya. Secara keseluruhan, filosofi ABS-SBK dapat menjaga tradisi Islam, memperkuat karakter masyarakat Minangkabau, serta menjaga harmoni dalam masyarakat yang beragam. Abstract This research aimed to analyze the philosophy of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" (ABS-SBK) and its implications in the social, cultural, and religious context of Minangkabau society. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review related to the research topic. Based on the analysis, it was found that the philosophy of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" based on history, evolution, and impact has influenced the social, cultural, and religious life of the Minangkabau community. ABS-SBK serves as a social framework that integrates Islamic values with local customs. However, there are challenges in understanding and implementing the ABS-SBK philosophy, especially in the context of local government in West Sumatra, such as conflicts requiring efforts from the Minangkabau community to address them. Overall, the ABS-SBK philosophy can preserve Islamic traditions, strengthen the character of the Minangkabau community, and maintain harmony in diverse societies.

Abstract

Abstrak Kelompok Salafi walau dikenal beraliran tradisional-konservatif dengan jargonya kembali pada Qur’an dan Sunnah, namun pada kenyataanya mereka dapat memanfaatkan teknologi informasi dengan maksimal untuk berdakwah. Tulisan ini membahas mengenai adanya gaya baru dakwah Salafi yang dilakukan oleh Sheikh Assim al-Hakeem. Ia merupakan seorang da'i asal Saudi yang dengan cepat mendapatkan popularitas di kalangan anak muda Indonesia melalui media sosial. Tulisan ini menganalisis cara dakwah yang disampaikan oleh Sheikh Assim yang banyak menarik simpati anak muda. Dengan menggunakan metode netnografi yang dicetuskan oleh Kozinets dengan 12 tahapan metodologis, penulis mengelaborasi dan menganalisis data secara virtual.  Selain itu untuk mendapatkan data yang lebih komperhensif penulis juga melakukan wawancara lapangan kepada peserta kajian Sheikh Assim ketika berdakwah di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menyuguhkan pertanyaaan apa motivasi anak muda tertarik dengan kajian Salafi Sheikh Assim dan mengapa banyak diminati. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan dakwah yang menggabungkan doktrin Salafi dengan gaya komunikasi jenaka dapat menarik minat anak muda Indonesia, terutama mereka yang kurang memiliki pemahaman matang tentang agama. Popularitas Sheikh Assim sebagai da'i viral di media sosial dengan gaya komunikasi santai menjadi faktor utama yang mendorong ia banyak disukai anak muda baik di media sosial maupun di kajian dakwahnya secara langsung. Abstract  Although Salafi are known to be traditional-conservative with their motto of returning to the Qur'an and Sunnah, they can make the most of information technology to preach. This paper discusses the new style of Salafi da'wah conducted by Sheikh Assim al-Hakeem. He is a Saudi da'i who quickly gained popularity among Indonesian youth through social media. This paper analyses the way of da'wah delivered by Sheikh Assim that attracts many young people. Using the netnography method coined by Kozinets with 12 methodological stages, the author elaborates and analyses the data virtually. In addition, to obtain more comprehensive data, the author conducted field interviews with Sheikh Assim's followers when preaching in Indonesia. This research presents the question of what motivates youth to be interested in Sheikh Assim's preaching and why they are in great demand. The results show that a da'wah approach that combines Salafi doctrine with a humorous communication style can attract Indonesian youth, especially those who lack a mature understanding of religion. Sheikh Assim's popularity as a viral da'i on social media with a relaxed communication style is the main factor that drives him to be liked by many youths both on social media and in his preaching.
