Abstract

Vocational and technical education (VTE) is a stratum of education system that deals directly with acquisition of skills for work. Nigeria’s National Policy on Education (NPE) in Section 7 Numbers 40 to 57 expansively stresses the need for VTE with a view to producing formidable workforce with relevant vocational and technical competences necessary for sustainable national development. On this premise, this paper underscores repositioning VTE in Nigeria. This article conceptually explores the similarities as well as the differences between work-based learning and work-place learning. How these two concepts result into vocational and technical skill acquisition with their attendant demands forms a major section of this paper.  The paper views that if the opportunities for job skills acquisition offered by work-based and work-place learning could be purposively harnessed into the nation’s educational programme, the ever-rising unemployment rate in the country would drastically be alleviated.

The study was carried out in different NYSC zones using 256 NYSC members which are selected through the simple random sampling techniques from the different NYSC zones in Lagos State. In order to achieve the aim of this study, 3 research questions and 2 hypotheses were formulated. A questionnaire titled quality of educational facilities and graduate employability competences (QEFGEC) was developed by the researchers. The research instrument was administered through google form, the questionnaire was designed online and responses were gathered online. Before the instrument was administered, it was subjected to face and content validity by 2 professionals in the field of Educational Management and Measurements and Evaluation in University of Lagos and Ekiti State University. Also, in ensuring the reliability of the used instrument, a pilot test was carried out using 20 NYSC members in Lagos. Using the Cronbach’s alpha reliability method, the instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.74. The instrument was self-administered to the respondents and responses were gathered within few days due to the aid of ICT. The data gathered on the research questions from the field was analyzed using a simple percentage, means, standard deviation while the research hypothesis was tested using inferential statistics. It was discovered that there is a significant relationship between availability, utilization of educational facilities and graduate employability competences. It was therefore recommended that Tertiary institution head must ensure that all needed facilities are provided for effective utilization by the teachers and students, also Government and all education stakeholders should provide adequate funding for the tertiary institution because without quality output, the objective of education in national development will not be achieve and lastly Student and lecturers should be encouraged to use, manage and maintain the limited educational facilities provided adequately

Abstract

During Corona Virus (Covid-19) lockdown, the introduction of the use of various applications such as zoom and the likes were on high side. Teachers were able to teach from their homes to the students in their respective homes. Unfortunately because of the economy of Nigeria, not everyone has the financial capacity to acquire phones, laptops and other related ICT tools to enable all to participate in the online teaching – learning process, in fact when it comes to adequate usage of ICT products, Nigeria is still far behind; only few are versatile in the use of ICT tools. The corona-virus is seen as the most trying time in the history of mankind. This period prompted concerned personnel and government to give more attention to the alternative to physical teaching-learning process called e-learning; audio, audio-visual, virtual learning and all forms of nonphysical contact teaching – learning process were more utilized. Though as good as it was, this exposes the major strength and huge weakness of the system owning to the fact very many things still need to put in place to take e-learning in Nigeria to its supposed place in the developmental trend of the world at large. This paper examined concept of E-Learning, historical development of E-learning, E-learning during COVID-19, disruptions of COVID-19 in Nigerian Educational Sector, challenges associated with E-Learning in Business education and benefits of E-Learning during COVID-19 pandemic in business education programmes.
