Abstract

This writing is conducted to demonstrate the interrelationship between the concepts of semantics and philosophy of linguistics and its implication in translation discipline. The writer starts by pointing out methods and emphasis of semantics and translation theories, although the writer will specifically discuss the practice of semantics in translating semantic situation. There are three parts of discussions in this paper: part one is mainly discussed the semantic and translation theories, part two describes the relation between the two subjects, and finally, part three shows the readers of how the semantics take place in translating written language. The writer finally wishes that the readers, especially Indonesian translators, will take benefit of understanding the semantics and use it for the benefit of as well as to denote and solve the problems and barriers in practicing translation.

Abstract

Language competence and pragmatic competence are significant factors in translation activity, thus there should be refined instruments, tools, and methods as well as procedures in raising awareness not only on linguistic competence of translators or students translators, but also equally important on pragmatic competence. The purpose of this writing is to suggest and trigger teachers/educators teaching translation subject at the university level particularly to make use of audiovisual as tool to increase awareness of implicatures and other pragmatic components involved in translating subtitles from English to Indonesian and vice versa. In other words, the students realise that they need pragmatic awareness in the process of text transfer. The writer uses library research to explore varieties of teaching methods and procedures in teaching translation using multimedia or audiovisual. To sum up, it is achievable to enhance pragmatic awareness in teaching translation using audiovisual as long as the teachers/lecturers/educators are able to develop material and propose a model or lesson plan of raising pragmatic awareness in language teaching, especially in the context of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

In the process of translation, the translator uses class shift as a translation strategy to achieve a communicative translation. The aims of the research are to investigatehow functional word shifts performed and kinds of classshift in the novel. This research paper was conducted by using the qualitative method. The result of the research indicated that there were 12 types of classshift found on the selected pages in the novel. In this research, the writer found 177classshifts in translation. There were shift from adverb to noun (3 data) is 1,7 %, shift from noun to adverb (4 data) is2,26 %, shift from adjective to verb (7 data) is 3,96 %, shift from adjective to noun (8 data) is 4,52 %, shift from adverb to adjective (9 data) is 5,09 %, shift from verb to adverb (10 data) is 5,65 %, shift from noun to adjective (11 data) is 6,21 %, shift from adverb to verb (15 data) is 8,47 %, shift from noun to verb (22 data) is 12,43 %, shift from verb to adjective (23 data) is 12,99 %, shift from verb to noun (26 data) is 14,69 %, and shift from adjective to adverb (39 data) is 22,03 %. Based on the elaborations above, it can be concluded that the result of this research show the translation of functional word shift are considered to be accurate, clear and natural because the words in TL has the same message with the words in SL although they have different classes of the word.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze Daniels’ work of historical context in his movie The Butler. To reveal the purpose of research, the writers utilize qualitative methodology with a mimetic approach to analyze the historical context in the movie. The results concluded that this movie gives a significant proportion in three types of history, namely political, social, and intellectual history. In the political aspect, the movie depicts the history when the United States used to establish the Segregation Law based on racial background. In the social aspect, the movie depicts non-white Americans who were considered unworthy. Whereas, in intellectual aspect, the movie portrays many historical figures and other Americans who fought the injustice demanding equality as the citizens.

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to identify the language styles used in a biography book, ‘The Sultan’s Admiral.’ The identification may help us see how various language styles add to non-fiction writing and are structured in a biography book. This current research is a qualitative analysis that uses a content analysis method. The data source is available from the biography ‘The Sultan’s Admiral: Barbarossa’ written by Ernle Bradford and published in English language edition in 2008. The data comes in the form of linguistic elements such as syntax, lexis, and semantic forms of the text. The data analysis technique categorizes or determines stylish language features from the sample and the level of style related to linguistics and stylistics approaches. Lexis, syntactic and semantic level of language style is prior categories of this research. As a result, the technical terms and adjectives are used in the lexical level of style, direct quotations, and em-dashed ( – ) adjuncts in sentences as the structural level of style, idioms, and figures of speech are used in the semantic level of style. Those chosen styles appear with the writer's background to give extra values to the actual story. This research describes and classifies portions among several linguistic features used by the narrator/writer in the development of narrative in Barbarossa's legendary life, to demonstrate the benefits of the technique in incorporating linguistic aspects into the text. Along with the analysis, the current research makes recommendations for future investigations. Keywords: Language Style, Stylistics, Biography, Narratology

Abstract

The article is conceptualized a lesson plan for teaching English spelling to young learners at primary school. The underlying strategy is pairing student and another peer student instead of teacher-student. Previous and present studies have shown that teaching spelling to learners can enhance other language skills, to name a few, i.e., reading and listening. Thus far, little to be found a practical lesson plan provided in the Indonesian context. Having this article is hoped to be a trigger for a new idea to consider student-student activity into the material design and its methods of teaching in the EFL context. The plan will be particularly helpful for the educators who seek perspectives in teaching and researching spelling to young learners.

Abstract

Cerita rakyat dan dongeng dianggap materi tidak formal dalam penyusunan materi di perguruan tinggi karena struktur narasi sederhana, pemakaian kalimat dan kosakata sehari-hari, dan isi cerita yang tidak ada kaitan dengan materi formal yang dibahas dan dikerjakan dalam tugas atau ujian. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis alasan, keuntungan, dan batasan penggunaan cerita rakyat dan dongeng sebagai materi yang patut diperhitungkan oleh para pendidik tingkat perguruan tinggi untuk penguatan pendidikan karakter. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian pustaka dengan menggunakan teknik analisis wacana. Sumber data utama berupa kumpulan pustaka berupa artikel hasil eksperimen, wacana atau gagasan tertulis dalam artikel, dan hasil pemaparan ide lewat seminar tentang cerita rakyat pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris di perguruan tinggi. Pengumpulan data dengan teknik pembacaan teks. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan teknik analisis isi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cerita rakyat tidak hanya dapat dipakai dalam pelajaran budi pekerti dan perkembangan karakter, tetapi juga bermanfaat untuk pembelajaran bahasa Inggirs dalam konteks pendidikan formal di perguruan tinggi. Kesadaran akan konten naratif khusus budaya dan nilai moral dalam setiap cerita lokal atau internasional dapat membantu mahasiswa perguruan tinggi untuk penguatan karakternya.Kata Kunci: cerita rakyat, perguruan tinggi, pendidikan karakter, pengajaran bahasa asing.STRENGTHENING CHARACTER EDUCATION THROUGH FOLKSTALES IN ENGLISH LESSONS IN HIGHER EDUCATION Abstract: Folktales and fairy tales are considered informal material in the preparation of material in higher education because of the simple narrative structure, daily use of sentences and vocabulary, and story content that has no connection with formal material that is discussed and worked on in assignments or examinations. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the reasons, advantages, and limitations of using folktales and fairy tales as material that should be taken into college-level educators to strengthen character education. This research is a literature study using discourse analysis techniques. The main data source in the form of a collection of literature in the form of articles of experimental results, discourse or ideas written in the article, and the results of the presentation of ideas through seminars about folktale in English lessons in college. Data were collected by text reading techniques. The collected data ware analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results showed that folkltales can not only be used in the lessons of character building and character development, but also beneficial for English language learning in the context of formal education in higher education. Awareness of specific cultural narrative content and moral values in any local or international story can help college students to strengthen their character.Keywords: folktales, higher education, character education, foreign language teaching
