Abstract

A dissertation is said to be an academician’s peak of academic achievement. One can demonstrate his expertise, passion in a particular field of study, and skills through his dissertation. Yet, in general, writing a dissertation may not be simple for every graduate student, especially when he has to write a dissertation about language in a language that is not his native language, English for instance, indicating that he must be able to show remarkable capabilities in manipulating the language. To find out about how a non-English speaking student coped with any problems persisted during the process of writing his dissertation in English I conducted a brief interview with an Indonesian lecturer, majoring in Linguistics, who wrote his dissertation in English. The interview presented some important fact in relation to successfully producing a qualified dissertation, i.e. mastery of one’s field of study, and the English academic writing skills. Keywords: Dissertation writing, academic writing, linguistics

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the students’ perceptions of the teaching of grammar as there have been numerous debates among researchers about the importance of teaching grammar.  In order to know whose argument is the right one, it is important to compare it with the result of present research. The results of this research have shown that there are several findings that support the theories proposed by some researchers. However, there are also some findings which do not support the theories. Hopefully, this study will be able to give some valuable insights for English teachers about what their students need in learning grammar. Keywords: Perception, Students, Grammar

Abstract

Nowadays, the communicative teaching has been influenced by the development of technology. Becoming interactive teacher would not be enough if it is not supported by technology usage. Online learning in this case has been a powerful tool to help language learners during their learning progress.  It is said that that online instruction raised the good and average student’s reading performance and the performance of the lowest-performing as well. In listening and speaking, online learning can help students improve their pronunciaton as well the comprehension skill. Therefore, the following study is designed to find out the students’ perceptions towards the use of both online and face-to-face learning in listening and speaking classroom. There are 30 students from the 1st and 3rd semester of English Language and Culture Departement and they joined the class for 1 semester. Online learning platform used was taken from Cambridge Learning Management System integrated with Unlock 2 and Unlock 4 books as the source of learning. The result shows that most of the students see online learning as an alternative tool to help them during their learning process.Keywords: blended learning, online learning, face-to-face learning, language learning

Abstract

The purpose of this research to discover non-observance of the maxim in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The data is taken from Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. In collecting the data,the writer uses non-participatory method. In analyzing data, the writer applies the pragmatic identity method. The main theory proposed by Grice as cited in Thomas (1995, p. 64) and supported by other theories related in analyzing the non-observance of the maxims, whether it is flouting a maxim, violating a maxim, infringing a maxim, opting out of a maxim, and suspending a maxim. In reporting the result of the analysis, the writer uses formal and informal method of presentation.The findings shows that non-observances of the maxim mostly happensbetween the characters that have close relation and according to goal and it is depend on the context of thesituation. Keywords: non-observance, maxim, flouting maxim and violating maxim

Abstract

This article discusses how have the English Sesame Streets books been translated into Indonesian. The source language had to be very carefully translated into the target language, in this case is Indonesian, since the readers are very young. Data were taken from five bilingual Sesame Street books for toddlers. They were analyzed by using translating techniques by Hoed (2006). The results showed that seven techniques were used and successfully conveyed the meaning and style from the source language to the target language.    Keywords: source language, target language, translation techniques

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and classify what types of mistakes made by learners (in this case the second grade students of Indraprasta University PGRI) in applying the simple past tense in the text of recount text. The errors are defined according to Mariusz Trawinski's theory. In addition, this study aims to obtain percentage of each type of mistakes made by learners, as well as to uncover the most dominant mistakes made by learners in using the simple past tense in the text recount. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method, while the general pattern or research design used by the researcher is a case study. Furthermore, the authors chose the second level of students who numbered 25 people as subjects in this study. The data in this research is obtained through the test of making recounts to the students. The result of the error analysis process is that learners perform three types of errors which are regular verb, irregular verbs, and auxiliary verbs. It is seen from the percentage of each type of error, the auxiliary verb is the most commonly performed error type with a percentage of 42.23%. Furthermore, errors in irregular verb is 33.90%, whereas the type of regular verb error is  29.87% of the total errors made by the learner. And from the side of the taxonomy of surface tactics or surface strategy taxonomy, errors in regular verb, irregular verb, and to be auxiliary consist of misformation, misordering, omission, and addition error. The highest error on auxiliary verb is misformation. The highest error on irregular verb is misformation. And the highest error in regular verb is omission. This shows that the use of simple past tense in writing recount text is still difficult to understand the students of the second grade of PGRI Indraprasta University. Keywords: simple past, recount texts

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the potentiality of machine based translation, such as Google Translation for example, in translating fixed expressions. The framework for fixed expression will be based on Baker’s typology of equivalence (1992) and Alexander’s classification (1978). The research will then compare the result of the translation done by the machine and the ones made by human translators which is readily available in the public. The Source Language is in Bahasa Indonesia while the Target Language will be in English. The result of the research shows that Google has the possibility to translate morphological and syntactical level units of language, yet has no to little possibility to translate Sentence level unit of language. Keywords: Machine Translation, Fixed Expressions

Abstract

Globalization requires Indonesian people to master international language, English. At first Indonesian bilingual speakers speak vernacular and Indonesian language yet nowadays they speak Indonesian language and English. The use of English occurs not only in formal situation but also informal situation. Bilingual speakers used to mix their English to Indonesia language in informal conversation, which is called code-mixing. The symptom of code-mixing in informal situation is found in Just Alvin talkshow at Metro TV. This research is aimed at discovering the types of code-mixing and syntactic units are mixed in the speeches. The data of this qualitative research is conversation transcriptions. The result shows that there are three types of code-mixing and three syntactic units found. The types of code-mixing are insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Abstract

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics concerned with utterance and speaker meaning. With regard to English language teaching (ELT) materials, pragmatics may deal with function in English or language functions—that is what or which language expression commonly used in particular situations. Speaking about function, there are some pragmatic aspects which we should be knowledgeable of. The present  paper attempts to  discuss what the pragmatic aspects are and their significance in the teaching of language functions through ELT materials. To discuss these pragmatic aspects, a library research was deployed by referring to previous studies on pragmatics and pragmatic competence in language teaching, including the author’s investigation on pragmatics in ELT materials. The results indicate that it is imperative for English language teachers to understand pragmatics in ELT materials as it helps them to teach language functions which are pragmatically effective or functional.Keywords: language functions, sociopragmatics, pragmalinguistics, meta-pragmatic information, ELT materials

Abstract

Grammar is one of the language features that are intricate for language learners. Owing to the fact that vocabulary has a substantial role in a language, many language learners are reluctant to know the rule of a language inside and out. Nonetheless, grammar is of value to avoid confusion towards the intended meaning. Gewerhr (1998) states that grammaticality is fundamental, thus the teaching of grammar should be central in a language classroom. Many teachers have been teaching grammar using various approaches, but still, errors are present in students’ performance in terms of grammatical accuracy. Thornbury (1999) suggested 2 different methods in the teaching of grammar: deductive and inductive. From years of experience in teaching grammar, the researcher has always opted for deductive method, since it is something that students are familiar with and saves time. For that reason, this study is conducted to find out which of the two methods works better. This research is focusing on the students’ ability to understand the specific topic, namely Participial Phrase. The participants of the research are 12 students of 4PBI1 and 11 students of 4PBI2, making 23 students in total. To find out the students’ knowledge and understanding, pre- and post-test were administered to both classes of 4PBI1 and 4PBI2. The results shown were really surprising, since the method widely and commonly adopted in the teaching of grammar was not good enough. Instead, the method which shows an intended result was inductive teaching. The pre- and post-test using such method was significantly different. Keywords: inductive teaching, deductive teaching, participial phrase
