Abstract

This research aimed to identify the kinds of affixes, and to explain the forms also the meaning of each affixes in the translated korean comic entitled “Blood Bank.” This study used qualitative research which contain open class words and new words. The data are taken from korean comic that can be accessed through online webpage or website. Based on the research finding, the writer found that derivational affixes is the part of morphological analysis. A derivational affix is an affix which the one word is derived from another. The derived word is often originated from different word class or the original ones. Meanwhile, affix is a grammatical element that is combined with a word, phrase, or root to produce derived forms. Affix is oficially divided into three main types: prefix (occurs at the beginning or front of the word), suffix (occurs at the end or back of the word), and infixes (occurs in the middle or inside of the word.) The result of this research shows that derivational affixes are used in the comic entitled “Blood Bank” by Silb. There are only two types of affixes that are found in the comic.They are prefix dis-, re-, mis-, im-, in-, non-, un-, as-, and suffix –age, -al,-ance, -er, -ion, -ment, -ce, -ity, -ness, -ful, -ship, -ate, -en, -ize, -able, -ish, -less, -ly, -ous, -y. There were three types of affixes but the writer didn’t find any infixes in the comic. The functions of derivational affixes consist of noun forming, adjective forming, and verb forming.

Abstract

Classroom discourse plays a pivotal role in the conversational context at schools. The teacher as a speaking model needs to consider the speech and diction during the conversation discourse. One way to help the interaction is by employing code-switching practice since the choice of language in class discourse is essential for creating a practical and easy-to-understand class. This study aimed to find the types and functions of code-switching practiced by the English teacher. By employing a descriptive qualitative design, the data were obtained from classroom observation completed by an audio recorder based on the theory of code-switching from Poplack (1980) and Mattson & Burenhult (1999). Then, the researchers transcribed and analyzed the data into data reduction, data display, and making an inference to explore the types and the functions of code-switching practice. The participant of this study was Mrs. Zu (Pseudo), an English teacher at SMAN 2 Pare. The finding presented the types of code-switching involving inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. The functions of code-switching cover topic switches, affective functions, and repetitive functions. The dominant practice was intra-sentential switching with affective functions during the classroom discourse. These functions help students comprehend the meaning transferred during classroom interaction.

Abstract

This research investigated the Asperger's Syndrome experienced by Nathan in A Brilliant Young Mind (X+Y) (2014) movie. Nathan is a nine-year-old boy who grew up with Autism Spectrum Disorder types called Asperger's Syndrome because he has shown two out of three main characteristics in the movie with six sub-characteristics included. With these characteristics, Nathan tends to have difficulties in mingling with society. The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics of Asperger’s syndrome that shows in A Brilliant Young Mind (X+Y) (2014) movie. The data in this research were taken from A Brilliant Young Mind (X+Y) (2014) movie and script directed by Morgan Matthews. In analyzing this movie, the theory formulated by Mesibov, Shea & Adams (2001) was used to analyze the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome that Nathan suffered. This research used the qualitative method. The finding shows that there are six sub-characteristics of the Asperger's Syndrome that Nathan has; impairment in multiple nonverbal behaviors, difficulty in building a friendship, a lack of sharing pleasure, readability, or achievement with others, having social or temperamental retaliation, routines or ritual which never changes, and having an interest in a particular subject. Abstract

A song can be said as a form of expression of the songwriter, about the life experiences he has gone through. Pink Sweat$ is an American singer and songwriter with the R&B genre of music. Pink Sweat$ made its record debut in the music world in 2018 to date. The song Honesty was released in 2018 and received a certificate platinum from the RIAA. In 2020, songs 17 and At My Worst get more than 100 million fans who downloaded the song on the spotify US digital platform. The song from Pink Sweat$ as the object of research, how the simplicity of the lyrics contains many meanings and able to attract music fans to listen to it. To reveal this, the researcher uses the deixis theory of George Yule (1996) in a pragmatic study. Researchers used a qualitative research method approach in this study. The results showed that the use of personal deixis was used more in the three songs, compared to temporal deixis and spatial deixis. Deixis persona refers to Pink Sweat$ himself, it can be said that this song is his personal love life experience.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the different types of directive speech act in Cruella 2021 movie. In this research, the researchers applied Searle’s theory of speech act. The researchers used qualitative method to analyze directive speech act in this research. The directive speech act is the subject of this investigation. Cruella 2021 movie is the focus of this investigation. This research contained utterances from the movie's conversation dialogue. A distinct sort of directive speech act could be found in each statement from the movie. In collecting the data, this research used non-participatory observation method. The categorization method was used to analyze the data for this research. In the analysis, the researchers found the types of directive speech act. This research had 15 data from types of directive speech act which was separated into command (3 data), request (3 data), permission (3 data), prohibition (3 data), and question (3 data). The researchers also explained the purpose of the different types of directive speech act in each utterance.

Abstract

This research was done with the aim of investigating the flouting maxims types in characters’ utterances. The movie with the title “Enola Holmes” was taken as the data source for this research. The utterances that showed the flouting maxims phenomena were used as the data to be analyzed by researchers. In conducting this research, the researchers took the theory of Grice (1975) to analyze the flouting maxims utterances. Besides, the data were collected through the use of the observational method and non-participatory technique. The collected data then were analyzed by using the pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing technique. The results discovered there were 16 data of flouting maxims in the movie. 1 data of flouting maxim of manner, 3 data of flouting maxim of quantity, 9 data of flouting maxim of relation, and 3 data of flouting maxim of quality were found in characters’ utterances. The most dominant maxim flouted in the utterances was flouting maxim of relation. It is because when communicating, the characters of the Enola Holmes movie respond irrelevantly to the topic being discussed.

Abstract

In social life, the study of semiotic is used to uncover the meaning implied in signs. Depart from that, the study study that is entitled “The Main Character in ‘Lowlife’ Music Video by Neck Deep Band: A Semiotic Approach” discusses the meaning conveyed from the main character in the music video. The main character was chosen as the object of research because it plays an important and most influential role in the conflict from the beginning to the end of the music video. The study is aimed to identify the visual elements contained in the main character of the music video from Neck Deep Band entitled “Lowlife”. The second aim is to analyze the denotative and connotative meaning conveyed from the main character in the music video clip.The data was collected through documentation method and note taking technique.The collected data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative method, and was based on the theory of visual communication proposed by Dyer (1993)`and the theory of denotative and connotative meaning proposed by Barthes (1957). The result of the study shows that the main character Jett contains the five visual communication elements, namely : Appearance, Manner, Activities, Props and Settings, and also Image. Jett represents a form of a cynical expression to majority elite social class that living in boring life with stiff demeanor who see themselves above anything else.

Abstract

This paper tries to reveal the influence of Demonstrating techniques on the success of learning English and the concern of students using techniques during the learning process. Quantitative data was carried out experimentally and collected using pre-test, treatment, and post-test techniques, by giving multiple choice tests before and after the application of the techniques. While qualitative data used a questionnaire by giving questionnaires to students, then conducting several interviews related to the application of the techniques. The test results before application of the techniques were only 70% of students who had the ability to speak English, but after the application of the demonstration techniques it increased to 95% of students’ ability to speak English. Meanwhile, in analyzing student perceptions, the study's findings also showed that the demonstration techniques were effective in improving students’ ability in English. The application of the Demonstration techniques in learning English, especially in speaking skill, is the right strategy to improve students’ abilities, because these techniques can turn abstract concepts into reality in the classroom. Abstract

This research was conducted to find out about the grammatical errors on Twitter. This research used descriptive qualitative research to aimed the types of grammatical errors by using the strategy taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen that was realized on Twitter. The method of collecting the data in this research used the observational method. And the purpose of this research was to identify and describe the types of grammatical errors on Twitter. Thus, the researcher found 4 types of grammatical errors, those were 4 data of addition with a percentage 26.7%, then for the second type was 6 data of omission with a percentage 40%, the third type was 3 data of misformation with a percentage 20%, and for the last were 2 data of misordering with the percentage 13.3%. For the data result, it can be concluded that the most types of grammatical errors on Twitter were omission types with 6 data and a percentage 40%.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the significant differences in the use of the Google Application and the Oxford Dictionary Application on the pronunciation results of the second-semester students in Hamzanwadi University English Study Program. The method used in this research is the comparative method. The population used in this study were second-semester students of the English education study program, totaling 125 students, and 32 students participating as samples. The instrument of this research is an oral test. The data collection technique was using a pronunciation test. The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference in their pronunciation mastery between using Google Application and Oxford Dictionary. It was found that the result of the mean score of the students using Google Apps was 72.75 and the standard deviation was 6.92. It means that the pronunciation mastery of the students in using Google Apps belongs to the "Good" category. Meanwhile, the mean of the students using the Oxford Dictionary was 81.25 and the standard deviation was 8.41. It means that the pronunciation mastery of the students in using the Oxford Dictionary belongs to the "Excellent" category.
