Abstract

This research aims at investigating the lecturer’s perception of im/politeness of student’s text message (WhatsApp messages) the data was collected in three stages, including authentic student WhatsApp message, questionnaires and interviews, the main source of data were five lecturers who teaches in the first semester. The data of this research was the text message send by first grade students of IKIP Mataram 2018/2019 to their lecturers during the first semester. There were 200 text messages that have been collected in this research. Since the data was analysed and interpreted in the form of words, phrases and sentences, this research employs the qualitative method. From the data analysis, it was found that there are two types of text messages that mostly appeared, questioning and request. For request message, student’s impoliteness was counted 5% out of 200 text message. While in questioning, the percentage of impoliteness text messages was shown higher than in request, it was 30% out of 200 text messages. Although there were some impolite text messages that were sent by students, the percentage of polite text messages were still being the highest among all categories. This shows us that, there are still many students who use polite language than those who don’t.

Abstract

This research discusses about illocution act. Illocution is an act of saying something, which is a field of study in pragmatic. According to the title of this paper, which is “Imperative Meaning on Speech Act as A Pragmatic study” Writer is determined to do a research on how the form of the imperative meaning can be seen from the grammatical and pragmatical side, also on how is this imperative meaning being applied into a speech act on the research object. The method used in this research is analysis- descriptive method. Based on the analysis of the story Der Räuber Hotzenplotz, the writer can clearly show that imperative meaning can be expressed not only by the construction of imperative sentence but also by the construction of declarative and interrogative sentence. The results of this research show that there are four meanings of imperatives; 1) instructive meaning, 2) requisite meaning, 3) permissive meaning, and threatening meaning.

Abstract

This article examines written literature in Lombok. Written literature is a recording of oral literature which is alive and efflorescent in a society conveyed mouth to mouth (tutur tinular). The corpus of the study was the figure of the Tuntel tuntel and Tegodek godek in the folklore of Lombok West Nusa Tenggara by G. Parman and Slamet Riyadi. This folklore or oral tradition serves as solace, social criticism, and educational tools. The theory used in this research is the literary theory that focuses on the figure, character, mandate, and plot in the story of Tetuntel tuntel and the Tegodek godek. The approach is an intrinsic approach, which is an approach that tries to interpret and analyze literary by simply judging from intrinsic elements or elements in the scope of literary itself without discussing the element out of the literary itself. As the author's background, the literary social situation. The method used is a descriptive method, which is to give an explanation or description of the frog character (Tetuntel Tuntel) and Monkey (Tegodek godek) in the folklore of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The result of this research derived from the beggining, middle, and end of story that the tetuntel tuntel was an honest and kind while Tegodek was a greedy and liar.

Abstract

This paper analyzes a translated text by comparing of work of the two participants in translating source language into target language by seeing its pros and cons viewed from he main core of text ; coherence and cohesion. The analyses cover the strengths and the drawbacks of each translator work. The strengths focused on the elements of coherence and cohesion, while the drawbacks are mapped through the communicative competence; grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence and strategic competence. At the end of the paper the writer serves the recommendation for each of the translator dealing with the work he/she has done. In general, the work of translation text much depends on how the translator prepares himself with 1) a knowledge of source language knowledge, target language knowledge, text-type knowledge, domain language, and contrastive knowledge each of the above, 2) an inference mechanism which permits :a) the decoding of texts, i.e reading and comprehending source language texts, b) the encoding of texts i.e writing the target language texts, and 3) communicative competence; four areas of knowledge and skills namely grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence. At last, a good translation is called coherence when the all elements of the text works to frame it and a text is achieving its cohesion means that the text is also coherence.

Abstract

This study reports the anaysis of taxis realized in cluase complexes of the article abstracts. The article abstracts themselves were taken from the International Seminar on Educational Technology (ISET) proceedings published by Postgraduate program, State University of Semarang. In the present study, the writers employed qualitative descriptive study such suggested by Fraenkel, Wallen, and Hyun (2012) to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that parataxis is more dominant than hypotaxis used in clause complexes in article abstracts. Those could be seen that 10% of parataxis is constructed in the text, while 8% of hypotaxis is constructed in the texts. Abstract

This research was done at two villages (Batujai and Seatanggor) in Praya Barat Distric, Lombok Tengah Regency. The aim is at interpreting the social activity whilst doing a local Tradition; giving Pisuke to family member of bride. This research uses qualitative interpretative analyses by using Giles Theory. The data taken through self-involving, recording, and pistening. The oject of research was conducted to “Giving diplomation Pisuke at Setanggor Village”. The result found that, there is internal accommodation and both parties converge each other.

Abstract

A research of language attitude is getting much attention for years in some fields. Due to the importance of the language attitude, this research intends to describe the language attitude of Sundanese towards English language in Eastern Priangan, West Java Province. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research. The data used is the data obtained through questioners, observations, and in-depth interviews to know the attitude of the Sundanese community language. Respondents which were involved in the research are respondents living in Eastern Priangan, such as Ciamis, Banjar, Tasikmalaya city, Tasikmalaya regency, Sumedang, Garut, and Pangandaran. This research took a social situation. The result of the research shows that Sundanese people in Eastern Priangan have different language attitude, in terms of cognitive, behavioural, and affective aspects towards English as a foreign language. It indicates that the language attitudes of Sundanese community have different language attitudes towards English, in terms cognitive, behavioural, and affective aspects. Briefly, most of respondents’ obvious positive language attitude towards English can be concluded that they were well conscious of English importance. The research result reveals the Sundanese respondents have the negative affective attitude towards English. Positive behavioural language attitude of Sundanese community towards English shows lower than Sundanese. It shows that Sundanese people tend to speak Sundanese language than English language. Sundanese people tend to speak their mother tongue since they live in West Java where most people speak Sundanese language.

Abstract

This paper is based on a qualitative study of identity clash of the first and the second generation of Pakistani diaspora in What Will People Say movie. The paper aims to discuss the multifarious different behaviors shown in the movie in which represented by the Parents as the first generation diaspora and the Child as the second generation diaspora. The meaning and social belonging are established in this context is then analysed. By using Homi’s representation and identity theory, some of the general social and cultural processes which influence both generation as individuals and as a minority group are then illustrated by the behaviours that subsequently create their identity. The study shows that the different behaviours between the first and the second diaspora generation that occur in the movie is inevitable. The first generation is strongly value the cultural feature of their homeland, meanwhile the second generation slowly but surely forgetting her roots as a Pakistani.

Abstract

This study conducted under the basic assumption that the teacher is one of the critical factors determining the success of teaching and learning. A teacher is the fruitful source of information, knowledge, and science to the students. This role would never lose from the personal characteristics of the teacher’s self as human being. The good characteristics of teachers usually make conductive situation for students in learning The purpose of this study was to find and identify the characteristics of English teachers. The subjects of this study were taken from the student’s of SMK Negeri 1Tanah Grogot with total number of respondents was 122 students. The procedure included: giving a questionaire to the students of the third class of SMK Negeri 1 Tanah Grogot and asking them to the select their good English teachers and the characteristics of the teachers, then the researcher interviewed the teachers to ask them question about the qualities they had based on questionaire of student’s perception. The researcher observed in the classroom when the teachers were teaching. The data analyzed descriptively. The result showed that all of the good English teacher had many similar characteristics based on the student’s perception such as : patient, distinct, wide perspective, charming, dicipline, encourage student to try to do the best, use grammatical in speaking English, variety of elicitation and explanation, giving explanation of English grammatical, and use English language in communication. The characteristics possessed one of them were : responsible, authority, humorous, attentive to student’s problem, very clear in teaching material, fair, giving, verbal model to use their own communication, respecful, giving example how to use the new vocabulary, giving conclusions about the material, and questioning

Abstract

NI KETUT FEBRIYANTI. An Analysis of Code Switching used in ‘The Architecture of Love’ novel written by Ika Natassa. S1 Thesis. Mataram: Bumigora University, 2019This research aims to analyze Code-Switching in The Architecture of Love novel written by Ika Natassa. The researcher obtained the data from chapter to chapter in the novel that consists of 22 chapters. This research used the descriptive qualitative method, technique of data analysis uses 1) Reading the novel, 2) Transcribing the code-switching utterances, 3) classifying which of the data consists of code switching’s type and function, 4) Drawing the conclusion. The finding showed that there were 203 data of code-switching in the novel that consist of three types of code-switching. The highest frequent was Intra-sentential switching with 90 data found, the second one is Inter-sentential switching with 83 data and the lowest is Tag-sentential switching with 30 data, and about the function of code-switching, the highest frequent was Message Qualification with 9 data and also Interjection with 8 data. The Addressee Specification has 4 data, Quotation has 2 data and the lowest frequent are Reiteration and Personalization vs. Objectivization with 1 datum.
