Abstract

The utilization of various local wisdoms in disaster mitigation efforts has been widely implemented, including in South Central Timor Regency. However, the effectiveness of these methods in delivering disaster communication messages—specifically in terms of practicality, reliability, and message strength—has not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to explore the perceptions of the people of West Timor, particularly those living in disaster-prone areas, regarding the effectiveness of Natoni as a medium for disaster communication campaigns. This study employs a qualitative research design, specifically a case study method. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The findings show that the Dawan community has a positive perspective on the use of Natoni as a folk medium for disaster communication campaigns. Natoni can be utilized as a platform to embed disaster education messages within its performances. The Dawan people of West Timor view Natoni as an effective folk medium for conveying disaster education messages. Natoni is considered powerful in delivering messages due to its integral role in sacred traditional rituals, making the messages more trusted and adhered to by the community. Academically, this study emphasizes the importance of researching traditional media as an effective tool for disseminating development information, particularly in rural areas with limited technological access. Practically, the study reinforces previous research that local wisdom-based folk media possesses the reliability to convey development messages in rural communities.

Abstract

This study explores app-development supporting Indonesia's fisheries digital ecosystem, aligned with the National Medium-Term Development Plan (2020-2024) that emphasizes digitalization to strengthen agriculture and fisheries. Focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration and group communication, the research examines how these elements influence the design and effectiveness of ICT for development (ICT4D). A qualitative case study approach was used, data collected from observations and interviews with app-developers in startups and the aquaculture community. The interview analysis follows two coding cycles: the first examines interdisciplinary collaboration and group communication dynamics and knowledge integration, while the second focuses on technology's impact on aquaculture practices. Findings reveal key categories—communication frequency and quality, role clarification, and knowledge management—vital to effective collaboration. Communication barriers can be mitigated through conflict resolution and training, while knowledge integration boost aquaculture efficiency and productivity. Applying structuration theory, this study shows how innovation-supportive organizational structures enhance individual agency, while rigid policies can stifle creativity. This research contributes to ICT4D literature by providing insights into collaboration strategies and organizational dynamics that influence technology development in traditional sectors, offering a framework for similar digital initiatives.

Abstract

This research examines the socio-cultural impacts on the adoption and perception of artificial intelligence, focusing on its role as a communicator in direct human-machine interactions within the framework of Human-Machine Communication. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly woven into daily human experiences, individuals are turning to it for emotional support and companionship, as seen in narratives of emotional relationships with generative AI. The research aims to understand how direct interactions with artificial intelligence influence perceptions of its utility and emotional closeness, contrasting these with indirect interactions. Employing a qualitative approach, the researchers conducted in-depth interviews, which reveal that initial skepticism about artificial intelligence diminishes with increased usage. Informants start recognizing artificial intelligence not just as a tool but as a companion providing non-judgmental support, facilitated by artificial intelligence-mediated communication. Findings suggest a significant perceptual shift among users, viewing artificial intelligence as capable of fulfilling emotional roles in human relationships. This research contributes to Human- Machine Communication by highlighting the qualitative nuances in how artificial intelligence is embedded in daily life, affecting social and emotional interactions. The research underscores artificial intelligence's potential not only in enhancing productivity but also in serving as a meaningful social and emotional partner. The Social Construction of Technology framework is used to analyze how different social groups influence the development of artificial intelligence, illustrating that the evolution of technology is shaped by societal interactions and perceptions.

Abstract

This article examines the representation of Indonesian athletes with disabilities in a photo essay documenting their intensive training for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This study analyses the messages in a series of photo essays by Mohammad Ayudha, a photojournalist from the national news agency, Antara Foto. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, to interpret the denotative, connotation, and mythical meaning in the photo essay. The findings reveal that, through his photo story sequence, photojournalist Mohammad Ayudha visualized the fighting spirit of Indonesian athletes with disabilities. Out of the thirteen photographic series, six images illustrate Roland Barthes' theory of the three stages of semiotics. These stages are designated as denotation, connotation, and myth. This study examines how photography of national athletes with disabilities during training sessions represents nationalism and determination before the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, using Roland Barthes' three semiotic stages. The Photojournalist intends to create a photograph that conveys a message to the public that physical limitations are not an obstacle in achieving success in the field of international sports, and is expected to help eliminate negative stigma against the disabled community.

Abstract

Retail companies in the digital era must continue to innovate to improve customer experience and service quality. This study aims to analyze the effect of customer experience on service quality through product publications on the Alfagift application. Employing a quantitative approach, this study uses Structural Equation Modeling - Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to analyze data from 150 Alfagift users in Limo District, Depok City. The results showed that customer experience significantly affected service quality (β = 0.565, p < 0.05), indicating that positive experiences increase customer perceptions of service quality. In addition, customer experience also significantly impacted product publications (β = 0.818, p < 0.05), stating that well-managed experiences result in more effective product communication. Product publications act as a mediating variable that strengthens the relationship between customer experience and service quality (β = 0.251, p < 0.05). These findings support the Customer Experience and Service Quality Theory (SERVQUAL) and enrich digital marketing studies. The practical implication of this study is that Alfamart needs to optimize its product publication strategy to increase customer engagement and strengthen service quality.

Abstract

As a country with high disaster risk, Indonesia faces the occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and strong winds that dominate more than 90% of disasters every year. In this situation, the media has a role in conveying information to the public. This study provides an overview of how news framing related to hydrometeorological disasters in two Indonesian online media, namely detik.com and tempo.co. Using a quantitative content analysis method, this study analyzes how detik.com and tempo.co framed the news related to hydrometeorological disasters from January 1, 2022, to November 1, 2024, with explores five main news frames from Semetko and Valkenburg. In addition, this study explores the tone of the news towards the government and the actors who become news sources. The results of the 85 articles analyzed show that the attribution of responsibility frame is the most dominant frame in the coverage of hydrometeorological disasters, followed by the frames of human interest, economy, and morality. In contrast, the conflict frame is very minimal. On the other hand, this study also found that the media mostly made the government the primary source of news and was also dominated by a neutral tone towards the government. This research found specific trends in using news frames, tone, and news sources in reporting hydrometeorological disasters. This research offers a perspective on how the media constructs narratives around hydrometeorological disasters while raising critical questions about the role of the press in shaping public understanding of climate-related disasters in Indonesia.
