This medium helps teachers to ensure that students have seen the learning material as a whole and determine whether they have understood the content as well as the language. Thus, this study aims to investigate students’ satisfaction on the English learning in virtual class through EdPuzzle. This study used survey as the research design by using close-ended questionnaire for quantitative data. The subject of this research was the first-year students of Auto-mechanical program from one private colleges in Thailand. The results show that listening activities assisted by EdPuzzle is challenging and interesting for students. It gives different situation when the students try to comprehend the story as the learner’s material as well as the source for assessment. The feature makes the students keep focusing on the whole stories before the finish the lesson. Thus, EdPuzzle is strongly recommended to be used in teaching to support the development of instructional activities using audio-visual sources. In addition, English teachers can be creative to provide teacher-made video to adjust the students’ English proficiency.

Abstract

Low learning motivation of senior high school students caused by several things including: learning methods that do not adjust with the times and the media does not support or encourage students to be interested in learning. This study attempted to answer those problems by applying the method of cooperative learning which make students actively interact and communicate with their group and using instructional video that does not make them bored in learning so they feel interested and motivated in learning. Most of the previous studies only focus on the impact of using the cooperative strategy or instructional video (choosing one of them) on the teaching-learning process to increase student's ability in a certain skill. But in this study, it is used the combination between cooperative strategy and instructional video in teaching-learning process. Since the study was quasi-experimental, the instruments to collect the data were test and questionnaire. The researcher took two classes as the experimental class= 25 students and the control class= 25 students of the twelfth grade students of SMAN 5 Tuban. The motivation questionnaire using four-point Likert-type scales. Items on the scales are anchored at 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = agree and 4 = strongly agree. The result of motivation questionnaire proved that the students are motivated in learning speaking when using cooperative-instructional video than conventional method. The result of T-Test indicates that English learning students on speaking skill taught by using the cooperative-instructional video was better than using the conventional learning method (textbook). This has implication for language teachers who are interested in incorporating technology into their classes, which may contain students with low motivation and their speaking ability. Keywords: students’ motivation in speaking, cooperative learning, instructional video.

Abstract

Collocation is also a good way to memorize new words. Words that are naturally associated in context are more effectively understood than those not associated; vocabulary is better taught in context; context alone is inadequate without deliberate connection. Context and deliberate association, particularly collocations, offer connections that allow learners to understand thoroughly the meaning of a word and to add it to their existing vocabulary. The aim of correct collocation during a conversation between a pilot and air traffic controller is to minimize the risk o misunderstandings a well-defined set of words are used in mostly the same sequence when clearances are given by the Air Traffic Controller and read back by Pilots.

Abstract

The English language encompasses four essential skills that learners need to master. Among these, reading is crucial, as it involves the ability to comprehend printed words and symbols. Students with strong reading skills are more likely to succeed academically. This study adopted a quantitative approach, emphasizing the outcomes (test results) over the instructional process. The aim was to explore the relationship between students' critical thinking abilities and their reading comprehension. The analysis employs Pearson Correlation because the data types are ordinal and interval. The study sample consisted of 58 students, with a significance level of 5% (0.05). The r-table value for this sample size is 0.4, which is higher than the r-table. This comparison shows that rxy is higher than the r-table, 0.5 > 0.258. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, indicating a positive correlation. From these results, it shows that there is a significant correlation between critical thinking skills and reading comprehension among the students of MAN 2 Gresik. Thus, it can be concluded that the higher the students' critical thinking skills, the better their reading comprehension abilities.

Abstract

This English language learning initiative, focused on acquiring new vocabulary, implemented a Flipped Classroom approach utilizing Quizlet as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) program for the experimental group. The research took place at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, during the 2023/2024 academic year. The homogeneity of the 59 samples was verified through Levene's test, with a significance value of 0.060 based on average pre-test scores, indicating homogeneity as the significance level was >0.05. Subsequently, pre-test and post-test data were collected from 12th-grade students in the social sciences and humanities (IPS/Shosum) program. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze both groups' pre-test and post-test data, along with the non-parametric Mann Whitney T-Test, resulting in an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.071, indicating rejection of the alternative hypothesis as it exceeded 0.05. Nevertheless, it is imperative to address various aspects in future research and practice to explore further potential benefits or drawbacks of incorporating Quizlet in the flipped classroom, including aspects like student engagement, motivation, and long-term retention of material. Additionally, subsequent studies could delve into evaluating the effectiveness of combining Quizlet with other instructional methods or technologies within the flipped classroom framework.
