Abstract

Bram Stoker's Dracula and L. J. Smith's Vampire Diaries: The Awakening, separated by a century, both feature the iconic vampire. This study explores how the characterization of the vampire, and its impact on female characters, has transformed within the gothic genre. Utilizing Jungian Archetype theory and textual analysis, this study examines the evolving portrayal of the vampire figure and its connection to the representation of women's horror and madness in the gothic narratives. The analysis reveals a shift in the vampire archetype from Dracula's monstrous and predatory figure to a more romanticized and conflicted one in Vampire Diaries: The Awakening. Additionally, the analysis demonstrates how female characters' experiences of horror and madness transition from fear of the vampire in Dracula to a more complex interplay of fear and desire in Vampire Diaries: The Awakening.

The rise of social media has transformed communication and self-expression, but it has also created a disparity between online and offline personas, particularly among college students. This study investigates the phenomenon of social media confidence versus classroom social anxiety at University of Nias, focusing on second- and fourth-semester students in the English education department. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with five students who actively use social media but interact less in the campus environment. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed that students experience was higher confidence and satisfaction on social media due to the lack of direct pressure and anonymity, which contrasts with their anxiety in traditional classroom settings. The study highlights the importance of a supportive and inclusive classroom environment to reduce social anxiety and enhance student engagement. Universities should provide resources such as psychological counseling, social skills training, and support groups to help students manage social anxiety. Integrating social media into the learning process and encouraging a balance between online and offline interactions can foster student confidence in both contexts. Effective anxiety management training is also essential for helping students navigate social dynamics in classrooms and on social media. These findings can inform interventions and strategies to support students in developing a healthy sense of self-presentation and authentic connections across different social spheres.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of impoliteness strategy and to find out the application of impoliteness strategy in the song lyrics. Blackpink. The data presented is 34 lyrics. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source was taken from YouTube, totaling 13 songs. Data were analyzed based on the incivility strategy developed by Culpeper (1996). Types of impoliteness found in blackpink song lyrics, 1. Bald impoliteness when recorded 12% 2. Positive politeness 29% 3. Negative impoliteness 53% 4. Sarcastic or mocking politeness 6% 5. Withholding politeness 0%. Why here I don't find wiyhold impoliteness because in the song withhold impoliteness it is very rarely used. Culpeper (2005) makes two observations in the realm of impoliteness. First, he believes that language and non-linguistic cues do not imply impoliteness. To put it another way, neither language nor non-linguistic cues are inherently disrespectful but according to Culpeper (1996), impoliteness can be conveyed not only vocally but also non-verbally, such as avoiding eye contact. When assessing impoliteness, it is also necessary to examine paralinguistic and nonverbal aspects, which is why it is impossible to use this type of song. This finding shows that Blackpink's lyrics use more negative types of impoliteness, which is why the impoliteness strategy is suitable for use in this research.
