Abstract

As online learning gains prominence, exploring the challenges and implications of student-centered English language learning in a digital context becomes crucial. This study investigates the experiences of Indonesian students engaging in student-centered English language learning through online platforms. The research aims to identify challenges, assess their impact on language proficiency and learning experiences, propose methods to enhance digital literacy and understand the relationship between digital literacy and readiness for student-centered online learning. The study reveals students' challenges in online student-centered English language learning. These challenges encompass technical issues, limitations in face-to-face interaction, time management constraints, the absence of personalized attention, digital literacy hurdles, and language barriers. Regarding the Digital Literacy challenge, the mean score is 2.73, similar to technical issues, and exhibits a relatively low standard deviation of 0.95. the Limited Personalized Attention challenge yields a mean score of 2.66 and a standard deviation of 1.01, indicating moderate severity and a diversity of perspectives. These challenges encompass technical difficulties, limited digital literacy, and difficulties maintaining self-discipline and motivation. The impacts of these challenges include hindered language proficiency development and diminished overall learning experiences. Better academic performance and overall learning accomplishments were shown to be significantly predicted by active engagement and digital literacy improvement (Beta = 0.432, p 0.001). Effective methods to enhance digital literacy emerge, including tailored online tutorials and interactive learning modules. By unraveling the intricacies of online language learning in a student-centered context, this research contributes to the ongoing dialogue surrounding effective pedagogical strategies in the age of digital education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how EFL students interpret implicature in memes, more specifically those that contain gender representation. A total of 30 undergraduate students majoring in English were used as the respondents. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing 7 memes which contain representations of men and women. Considering that memes are multimodal constructions as they are commonly made up of a combination of texts and images, the interaction between these two were also investigated to see how they were able to assist the students in interpreting the hidden meaning behind the memes. The findings revealed that a lot of the students were unable to properly deduce or comprehend the implied meaning regarding gender representation even though they felt that the texts and images did indeed help them in understanding the memes. It was found that they mostly interpreted the memes explicitly. This shows that they still lack pragmatic competence overall. Therefore, it was suggested that language teachers pay more attention to the teaching of implicatures, especially in memes.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a model of Teacher-Parent Collaboration and Student Assistance to support learning from home and strengthening post-pandemic learning. By using the Plom Development model, this research data was obtained through three stages of development, namely 1) Preliminary Research using interviews and field assessments as data collection instruments; 2) Development model with reference to preliminary research data; 3) Assessment to determine the validity, practicality and effectiveness of the model that has been developed using validity sheets, FGDs and student daily reports. The results of this research concluded that the collaborative model of teachers and parents with student assistance is applicable based on validity with an average value of 3.47 and Cronbach alpha 0.83 which can be interpreted as an acceptable model for implementation. In addition, this model is said to be effective in helping parents and students in the learning process from home by looking at an average value of 90% on aspects that are used to evaluate its effectiveness and being an effective model according to the responses of teachers and students in the implementation process.

Abstract

Understanding students' perceptions of teachers' language choices is crucial as it significantly impacts motivation, allowing educators to cater to diverse student abilities and address learning difficulties. Effective preparation, encompassing materials and teaching methods, becomes indispensable in fostering support for learning. Constructivist theories by Piaget and Vygotsky underscore teachers as facilitators, guiding students through active interaction and collaboration to construct knowledge. This research delves into examining the correlation between students' perceptions of teachers' use of a second language in teaching English and their motivation to learn English. Employing a quantitative approach, the study involved 37 junior high school students from Muhammadiyah 4 Giri in Gresik, with data collected through a closed-ended questionnaire. Data analysis results reveal a positive and significant correlation between students' perceptions of teachers' use of a second language, specifically Indonesian as the medium of instruction, and their motivation to learn English. This implies that more positive perceptions regarding the use of a second language by teachers correspond to higher motivation levels for learning English. These findings underscore the pivotal role of the second language in junior high school English teaching. Teachers may consider employing Indonesian strategically to enhance students' motivation to learn English. Future research is recommended to delve deeper into understanding additional factors influencing the correlation between students' perceptions, teachers' language choices, and students' motivation. Expanding the sample size and including diverse school contexts can further enhance the generalizability of the results.

Abstract

Global demand for English as a foreign language (EFL) has generated a demand for learning options that maintain students motivated to study the language. The purpose of this study is to analyze ELT and EFL trends using published JEES and JEFL publications as a basis. The period under examination was from 2019 to 2023. Researchers investigated the 229 studies that were published in journals throughout this time period, concentrating on providing an overview of the methodology, subjects, and data collection techniques of the populations that were studied. In order to address the emerging topics in contemporary EFL and ELT research, we have also attempted to provide a summary of the literature's major findings. Thus, this work provides a thorough synthesis and analysis of current research trends in EFL and ELT in Indonesia. Furthermore, most of the studies featured university students and adults as well as teachers from general education. The results of this study show that the most discussed topics in both journals are about teaching practices and methods. The researcher also found extensive use of multimedia and ICT, through which we can identify a viable path for enhancing language learning, teaching, and future research. This review highlights the need for sustainable interventions and studies with diverse populations in the expanding field of EFL.
