Abstract

There have been numerous studies done on the guidelines of user interface, but only a number of them have considered specific guidelines for the design of children’s interface. This paper is about a research on the specific guidelines for children, focusing on the criteria of graphic design. The objective of this research is to study on the guidelines of user interface design and to develop specific guidelines on children’s graphic design. The criteria of graphic design are the priority of this research since previous research have proven that graphic design is the main factor which contributes to the problem of usability of web application interfaces, in terms of the overall graphic layout not being in a hierarchical order, not taken into concern the availability of space, inappropriate margin, improper type and font size selection, and less concentration on the use of the colours. The research methodology makes use of the comparison of and the coordination to the guidelines on children’s interface and the specific guidelines on the graphic design of web application interfaces. The contribution of this research is the guidelines on the design of web application graphics which are specifically for children. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i6.2658

Abstract

In this paper we show that a biologically inspired model can be successfully applied to problems of building optimal district heating network. The model is based on physiological observations of the true slime mold Physarumpolycephalum, but can also be used for path-finding in the complicated networks of mazes and road maps. A strategy of optimally building heating distribution network was guided by the model and a well-tuned ant colony algorithm and genetic algorithm. The results indicate that although there are not large-scale efficiency savings to be made, the biologically inspired amoeboid movement model is capable of finding results of equal or better optimality than a comparable ant colony algorithm and genetic algorithm. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i12.3890

Abstract

Efficient bandwidth utilization is paramount in wireless communication systems, particulary in fadingenvironments, since fading is one of the major constraints that impair communication in wireless systems. The bandwidth efficiency of a wireless communication system can be enhanced significantly by employingpower and modulation adaptation policies with diversity combining gain. In this work, first we examine ananalytically-derived solution for Maximum Combining Ratio (MRC) diversity technique for the capacity perunit bandwidth. Then, we design an adaptive transmission system to utilize the diversity combining gain whileretaining the target BER by adapting power and constellation size using continuous power, channel inversionwith fixed rate and continuous power and disrecte-rate. By considering the effect of diversity combininggain, the designed system yields a reasonable spectral efficiency with respect to target BER that grows asthe number of diversity levels increase. Furthermore, the presented results show continuous power anddiscrete-rate adaptation policy reduces probability of outage unlike its achieved spectral efficiency is closeto other selected policies, which ratifies the optimized switching thresholds and makes it best candidate forimperfect channel conditions.

Abstract

Lightning strikes affect the building structures by producing high electric field on the surface and around the building structure. Lightning air terminal is a traditional enemy of the thunder storm as it captures the lightning flashes. Effect of lightning flash on the building structure when the lightning air terminal was not installed and when it was installed on different building structure was studied in this paper.  Similarly most of the time Lightning Air Terminal (LAT) bypasses take palce on different building structures and thus a lot of building structures get damage. The phenomenon of bypasses was also studied in this paper. When thunder storm strikes a building the electric field effect is propagated throughout the building surface and it damages the entire building. When the air terminal is places on the corners/edges it captures the lightning flashes on certain points and discharges it into the ground and the building remains safe. This phenomenon was studied in detail in this paper and it was proved that by installing the air terminal the remaining building structure was safe and the electric field intensity was concentrated on the installed air terminal rather than the whole roof top and the rest of the building.

Abstract

The physical development of urban communities and cities, as well as the advancement of communication and information world, increased the need for advanced technologies. Nowadays, many urban planners and managers, especially the mangers of the intelligent transport system and smart government, are concerned with the transformation of physical cities to electronic cities and finally too smart cities in the real world. Making electronic cities smart requires the full participation of urban management organizations in different sectors. In addition, the required frameworks should be designed and implemented based on the close relations of these organizations with each other. This study aimed to investigate the key factors in transforming Birjand city into a smarter city by focusing on two components of the intelligent transport system and smart government. In smart government, a structure is recommended that is appropriate for launching and preparing the policies and regulations that need to be covered by different dimensions. In smart transportation component, one of the most important and valuable solutions to the problems of transportation is the intelligent transport system (ITS).  In this context, measuring potentials and implementing strategic planning can play a key role in increasing service delivery and reducing problems. This research design is an applied study. It intends to introduce the principles and dimensions of the intelligent transportation system and explore the potentials and strategic planning opportunities in Birjand city using a descriptive-analytical method. The data were collected by the library - documentary method. Furthermore, the study was conducted as field-survey research (interviews and questionnaires). In continuation, the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of the intelligent transportation system were determined and analyzed using the SWOT strategic planning model. Finally, appropriate strategies were presented.

Abstract

The empirical risk minimization methods were often used to estimate the multifunctional sensor regression function in signal reconstruction. The small size of sample data would lead to the problem of poor generalization capability and overfitting. Support vector machine (SVM) is a novel machine learning method based on structural risk minimization, and it can improve generalization capability and restrain overfitting. In this paper, an optimal ν Support Vector Regression (ν-SVR) algorithms have been proposed for multifunctional sensor reconstruction, which combined ν-SVR with particle swarm optimization (PSO), achieving accurate estimation of both the hyperparameters and reconstruction function. The results of emulation and theory analysis indicate that the proposed algorithm is more accurate and reliable for signal reconstruction. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i4.4204

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop simple method for non contact thickness gauge using ultrasonic sensor and android smartphone. This system is constructed using ultrasonic sensor HY-SRF05, microcontroller ATMEGA328, bluetooth module and android smartphone. Ultrasonic sensor transmits ultrasonic pulses in the form of waves and recieves back the pulses after the waves are reflected by an object. The time duration of ultrasonic between  transmition and reception is calculated as distance between sensor and sample. The method of for thickness measurement adhere sample on holder infront of ultrasonic sensor. The Thickness measurement of sample is calculated base on distance beetwen sensor to holder (fixed barrier)  and sample to sensor. The zero position of measurement is distance of sensor to holder. The data of thickness is sent via bluetooth and received by the Android application. Android Application uses to  display measurement is designed base on MIT App Inventor for Android (AIA) platform. Abstract

This paper is devoted to the generation and evaluation of the Chaos-based M-ary spreading sequences on communications systems. Sequences obtained by repeating a truncated and multi-ary quantized chaotic series are compared with classical m-sequences by means of the autocorrelation and cross-correlation properties and power-spectral features. Anti-noise performance of binary sequences and chaotic-based M-ary spreading sequences has been compared in the case of the same single-frequency interferences. Studies have shown that spectral features and anti-noise performance of chaotic-based M-ary spreading sequences which have great researching value are better than binary sequences. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i8.1654
