Abstract

This paper describes the use of the PhET simulator on the photoelectric effect to explore the behavior of electrons in metal when exposed to light with differing frequencies. Using this simulation, students can be able to observe variations in electron emission when changing various parameters such as intensity or frequency of light. This paper is experimental research to test the PhET simulator on the photoelectric effect in terms of the guiding relationship in the photoelectric effect. This also analyzed the PhET simulation for improvements in classroom activities. The main tool of this research is a computer capable of running the PhET simulation. It was found that all principles of the photoelectric effect are followed by the simulation. This includes if there is an emission of electrons, the relationship between the kinetic energy of the electron and frequency, and the relationship photoelectric current and light intensity. However, it was observed that there is no work function of the metals on the simulation and this can have an effect the prediction if there is an emission or not. The graphs generated of the simulation contains error because of the thick line graph. It would be better for classroom practice if these gaps are bridged and teachers manage to adopt the simulation.

Abstract

The research aims to determine the effectiveness of guided inquiry with Edmodo-based mobile learning system implementation in physics learning. Edmodo is a learning management system application developed for mobile learning that enables students to access tasks and teaching materials anytime and anywhere. This research was quasi-experimental that used a pretest-posttest control group design with 11th-grade students in SMAN 1 Makassar as a sample, and each class consisted of 33 students who were used as the experimental class and the control class. The sample selection was carried out using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used in this study was a physics learning achievement test in the form of multiple-choice tests. Data were analyzed using the T-test on two samples with test equipment that had gone through expert validation tests and empirical tests. The result of the T-test analysis showed no difference in learning outcomes between experimental and control classes before being treated, this result contradicts the results of the T-test analysis after treatment which shows significant differences in physics learning outcomes in students taught using guided inquiry by applying a learning-based mobile learning system with students taught using guided inquiry without mobile learning system. Based on these two T-test results and by using Cohen-D analysis with the result of 2,980. Therefore, the application of a mobile learning system based on Edmodo is effective in improving physics learning students’ outcomes in class XI MIPA SMA Negeri 1 Makassar.

Abstract

The learning process in Indonesia has not directed students to be able to think at a high level which resulted in the quality of education in Indonesia is still quite low. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of STEAM-based learning on students' critical thinking skills. This research is a "pree experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design" study. The population of this study were all students of class XI IPA, totaling 3 classes. Sampling was done by means of simple random sampling so that the students of class XI IPA 1 SMAN 1 Baitussalam were obtained. The data collection technique used is a test question (pretest and posttest). The results showed that the Pre-test score obtained was a minimum of 5 and a maximum value of 50, while the Post-test score of at least 60 and a maximum value of 95, the average improvement of students on the final test was more than the average score of the pretest. The results of data analysis showed the value of Sig. (2-tailed) value 0.000 0.05. This shows that H0 is rejected which indicates that there are differences in students' critical thinking results. This shows an increase in students' critical thinking through the application of a STEAM-based learning approach. These differences can be caused by differences in the learning approaches used, where in the post-test using the STEAM approach, during the learning process students are faced with a problem that must be solved with their respective group friends. In addition, students must be able to connect science concepts with concepts found in everyday life. Based on the results of the research obtained, it shows that there is a significant effect of implementing STEAM-based learning on students' critical thinking skills.
