Abstract

This paper informs the thoughts of a Western scholar, John Burton, related to his commentary on the naskh theory addressed to the Quran and Hadith or in other terms Tradition, borrowed the term Burton. In his book, al-Suyuthi quotes the words of the scholars that no one can interpret the Quran except after he knows the science of nāskh. Therefore, the concept of naskh is important to be studied further through the new perspective of scholars both Muslim and Non-Muslim. John Burton was selected to be studied because he was among the earliest Western scholar who shows great concern for the discussed matter in the field of the Quran and Hadith studies. From this writing, it was found, that in Burton’s view, the removal of the verse and its rules were ideas made by Muslim fuqaha who tried to base their legal decisions on the Quran even though the text of the Quran had no reference to that decision.

One of the factors arising from the conflict is because of the conversion of religions, especially if done by people of Islam who moved to other religion in overt. In the conversion of religion, change or is not merely due to matters of belief, or degrading religion, but many factors cause it, such as environmental factors, social relations, psychology, and even because the factor of Divine guidance. In a pluralistic society, the existence of religious conversion can glue brotherhood between religious communities. Therefore, the conversion of religion can shape one's thoughts to accept and appreciate the religion of others more openly in many perspectives.

Abstract

This paper tries to construct the philosophy of Iqbal's civilization thought by using the theory of four causes of Aristotle. It is concluded that the steps to achieve the philosophy of superior civilization are first, the actor of civilization must recognize themselves (Khudi). Achievement of Khudi means he has met with God, after that the actor of civilization must return to nature to fuse (absence) with the community, manage nature with the principles of divinity (bi-Khudi). Then civilization actors dialectic with history to determine the prototype of civilization. From the dialectical results, then it is chosen the era of the prophet who has the characteristics of civilization across regions and races, and not based on blood.

Abstract

This article discusses Muḥammad Syaḥrūr's contemporary interpretation of verses of milk al-yamīn, which by classical interpretation means not far from the words al-raqīq, al-sarāri, al-īabīd, al-jawāri, and al-sabāyā. The interpretation is relative, non-standard and not final (read: only interpretation in the children of his time). This is understandable because the slavery system at that time still existed. For Syaḥrūr, the interpretation of "mā malakat aimānukum (milk al-yamīn)" with the meaning of this slave is not in accordance with the spirit of the Qur'an. Because, al-Qur'an is highly upholding universal human values; such as equality between humans, helping the oppressed and real social justice.

Abstract

This paper deals with Islam in Indonesia through two great discourses: Political Islam and Cultural Islam. I try to explore the history and tranformation of both by library research from before independence until after New Order called reformation era. By using descriptive-analyses method, this paper concludes that the dynamic of the two poles was going on and also being actual around the society. The group of Political Islam with its vote through Islamic Parties wants to make Islam as an ideological principle and Indonesia as a religious country. Meanwhile, the group of Cultural Islam with the spirit of d’awa which want to realize Islam as the diffused values of live with the culture and also anti-sectarianism rejects the concept of Political Islam.

Abstract

This article explains the relationship between Islam and science from the perspective of Nurcholish Madjid. Nurcholish saw the relationship between Islam and science through two things, namely: first, the contribution of Islam to science; and second, the organic unity of Islam and science. Islam contributes greatly to the development of science and the contribution of Islam really cannot be underestimated because Islam is able to influence almost all fields of scientific studies. In addition, Islam has an organic and harmonious relationship with science. According to Nurcholish, science will always have a positive impact on a Muslim's faith, but if his faith is true. Conversely, if the faith is wrong, then the faith will be filled with things that are mythological. If a belief is filled with mythology, then the belief (religion) will be defeated by science.
