Abstract

This research was conducted within urban poor families. These families are generally bound in a complex, cross cutting, and changing network of relationships, which together would reinforce the existence of society. Economic productivity of poor families is supported by all members of the family, including the children, with a definite division of work. With qualitative-phenomenological approach, the study concluded that the degree of independence of the households is supported by strong family ties, mutual trust among members of the family, sharing value, and the spirit of working together in solving problems. Interaction between families in the community who are also based on the norms of trust, mutual help, and togetherness, is a form of social capital and is important for the formation of social networks.

The results of this study concluded that the boarding school is an educational institution that implemented integral character education in the overall process of education and learning. Hence, it formed the typical boarding school culture that distinguishes it from other education system of non-Islamic boarding school. Values being developed in Islamic boarding school help its students in building their characters through five principles of sincerity, simplicity, independency, brotherhood guided by the spirit of religion, and freedom. In addition to that, in general, modern Islamic boarding schools have followed the path of Gontor Modern Islamic Boarding School who developed a motto of healthy, knowledgeable, and free-thinking. Those values are then being fully implemented in not only learning process, but also in the formation of Islamic boarding school culture, co-curricular activities, and extra-curricular activities.

Abstract

One of the issues on children’s welfare with a growing national concern is an issue of self-esteem level of the street children. Widespread phenomenon of street children with a low self-esteem level in Jakarta turns out to be a complex issue. In dealing with such problem, the government should be responsive to the phenomenon in which the street-children are increasing, while efforts to improve street children’s self-esteem are still not optimal. This can be seen from their behaviors that tend to be negative such as their issues on violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse, prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs / HIV / AIDS) and other problems. Extra efforts from the government of Jakarta City are needed to improve street children’s self-esteem through mentoring, counseling, education, employment, and so forth.
