Abstract

The study aims to determine the development of English vocabulary of children aged 6-7 years through Big Book media on students in class I of SD Negeri 040443 Kabanjahe. This study uses an experimental research method because it will look for the effect of certain treatments. The type of research is the Quasi Experiment. The quasi-experimental research design used in this research is the Nonequivalent control group design. In this design there are two groups used, namely the experimental group and the control group. The population used in this research was all class I138students at SD Negeri 040443 Kabanjahe, totaling 40 children, with the sample being classes B1 and B2 determined by purposive sampling. Data collection techniques by conducting observations, questions, and answers (interviews), and taking physical evidence such as photographs (documents), and RPPH. Before being used, the instrument was tested for validity and reliability. Validity testing with the Corrected Item Total Correlation technique and reliability testing with Cronbach Alpha's technique. All calculations use the help of the SPSS program version 18.0 for windows. Furthermore, to meet the requirements of the hypothesis test, normality calculations were carried out with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and homogeneity calculations with the Lavene Statistic test on both samples (class B1 and class B2). Data analysis techniques were carried out with descriptive statistics and continued with inferential statistics using the t-test or t-test, with the formula paired sample t-test and a significance value of α = 0.05 (5%). Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the use of Big Book media in the English learning process on vocabulary proved to have a significant effect on the development of children's English vocabulary in the experimental group in class B1. The level of vocabulary development of children who were given treatment was higher compared to the group of children who were not given treatment, in the experimental group and the control group there was a "quite significant" difference. Based on calculations carried out with the help of the SPSS version 18.0 for Windows program, it is known that the value of t in the SPSS output after the paired samples T-test analysis was -5.315. Where in the t value there is a minus sign (-) which is a sign that there is a difference between the two groups. Therefore, the presence of this minus sign indicates a signal that there is a difference between the two groups (experimental and control).

This study used a descriptive qualitative method with the research subjects being students, an English teacher, and the head of the library at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa. Data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and verification or conclusion. The results showed that students of SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa have not fully utilized the school library as an English learning resource. From the available data, only 37.83% of students have used the library as a learning resource, while the others (62.16%) have not optimally utilized the facility. The main obstacles identified were the inadequate library opening schedule and the limited collection of English books. The involvement of the English teacher in making the school library a learning resource for students in reading English at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa has played a quiet role, providing explanations about the library, inviting students to visit the library to learn together, sharing knowledge, look for book references for assignments and inviting students to make reading book reports containing summaries of books. Then, the availability of book collections at SMA Negeri 1 Lahewa library did not provide enough for the learning needs of students in reading English. It is supported by students' statements during interviews that most of them found the difficultness to get the appropriate English books.

Abstract

Cultural values are the basis of thinking and views of a community group that has been studied and selected so that it is considered good, therefore cultural values based learning is very important for the easy generation of a nation. In Indonesia, cultural values in education are included in the independent curriculum and are referred to as the Pancasila student profile. These values must be applied in learning including in learning materials as a form of strengthening the cultural values of the nation's children in the midst of global progress. Given the importance of this, this study aims to analyze cultural values in reading texts contained in English textbooks at UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli. The main purpose of this study is to analyze and describe the cultural values in the reading text, how the author implements the meaning in the sentence and whether the reading text in the book have met the purpose of the curriculum. This research used a qualitative approach and content analysis technique. The data analysis technique is based on the theory namely familiarizing and organizing, coding and reduction and interpreting and representing. Data collection was based on using check table instruments and document analysis. Data were collected through analysis of reading texts in the English for Nusantara book at UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli. Then the data collected was processed qualitatively to analyze the patterns and meanings by the cultural values in the Pancasila student profile. The results showed that five dimensions were successfully adapted in the reading text, namely the dimension of faith, ear o almighty God and noble morals, the second dimension of global diversity, the third dimension of cooperation, the fourth dimension of independence and the fifth dimension of creativity. The only dimension that was not found was the critical reasoning dimension. The next finding is the meaning integration technique conveyed in the text sentences based on the results of the analysis, the researcher found two types of meaning adaptation in the sentences in the text, namely explicit and implicit. Between the two, the explicit adaptation technique is the most widely used by book authors while implicit is used the least. Based on these two findings, the researcher concluded that the author still needs to pay attention to embedding the value of the Pancasila student profile into the student reading text.
