Abstract

To effectively implement an independent curriculum, teachers must excel at engaging classroom management. This research aimed to identify challenges faced by English teachers in managing seventh-grade classes at UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli and the factors contributing to these difficulties. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to gather data through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student surveys. The data were analyzed to pinpoint specific challenges and their underlying causes. English teachers encountered nine primary classroom management issues, including difficulties in creating conducive learning environments, concluding lessons, managing transitions, and interacting with parents. Teachers also struggled with fostering a positive classroom community and providing effective rewards. Additionally, challenges arose in monitoring student progress, organizing group work, and assessing student performance. Teacher interviews revealed that time constraints, academic priorities, and limited school resources were major factors contributing to these difficulties. This study indicates that time, academic workload, and insufficient school resources significantly hinder English teachers' ability to manage their classrooms effectively within the independent curriculum framework.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the naming of sub-villages and the diversity of cultural vocabulary in Bawodesolo Village, Gunungsitoli District, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra Province. The focus of this research is on three sub-villages: Delafiga, Hilinangea, and Simanaere. Using a phenomenological research design, this study involves semi-structured interviews with local residents to understand the meanings and cultural contexts of these sub-village names. The results of the research show that the sub-village names reflect the cultural identity, history, and values of the local community. Names such as "Delafiga" and "Simanaere" are not only geographical markers but also hold historical narratives and cultural concepts that are significant to the community. The analysis of cultural vocabulary reveals that the terms used by the residents reflect their relationship with the environment, spiritual beliefs, and social practices. This study highlights the importance of toponymy in understanding cultural identity and suggests that regional development policies should consider the cultural values embedded in place names. This research contributes to the preservation of local cultural heritage and provides valuable insights for further studies on cultural dynamics in this area.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine whether there is an improvement in students' reading comprehension after being taught using the 'Make a Match' technique. The researcher employed a classroom action research design conducted over two cycles. The research focused on the students of XI IPS 2. The instruments utilized for this study were a reading test and an observation sheet. The results of each cycle revealed that in Cycle I, the technique was not successful. Therefore, the research continued to the next cycle after revising the plan based on the weaknesses identified in Cycle I. The findings of Cycle II indicated that 19 students (67.85%) reached the 'good' level, while 7 students (25%) achieved the 'very good' level. These results demonstrate that the implementation of the 'Make a Match' Technique in this study successfully enhanced students’ reading comprehension.
