Abstract

Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is a nutritional problem resulting from protein or energy deficiency, often associated with the occurrence of infections. Infections due to weakened immune systems caused by protein deficiency can lead to inflammation. The flavonoid content in moringa oleifera leaf (MOL) has anti-inflammatory that can be utilized as an alternative treatment for PEM. Objective: To identified the potential of MOL as an anti-inflammatory in PEM conditions. Method: This study is a systematic literature review that were obtained through Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and PubMed databases for the last 10 years from 2012 to 2022 with a total 80 articles found based on keyword searches. References then re-selected using PICOS method, resulting in 9 articles be reviewed. The review process involves gathering pertinent information that is applicable to the study objectives and analyzing it based on population/problems, intervention or management to the case, comparating the similarities and differences, study the outcome and study design of the previous articles. Then the information will be synthesized to conclude the review. Results: The findings indicate that MOL can be used effectively for patient with PEM as an anti-inflammatory agent by reducing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α Conclusions: Administration of oral supplementation of MOL has a positive impact as an anti-inflamatory in PEM condition.

Abstract

Hypertension is a serious degenerative disease because it affects the condition of the heart, brain, kidneys, and other organs. Hypertension management can be done by implementing hypertension self-management to control blood pressure and reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Lack of self-management in hypertensive patients can affect the severity of the disease and cause complications. This study aims to determine the relationship between hypertension self-management and blood pressure in the elderly in the working area of Jatinangor Community Health Center. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach. The study respondents were elderly people with hypertension who were registered in seven Posbindu in the working area of Jatinangor Community Health Center and did not experience complications, totalling 133 respondents. Data were collected during Posbindu activities and home visits using a hypertension self-management questionnaire and blood pressure measurements using a digital sphygmomanometer. The data were analysed with Rasch Model to convert the scale into interval and then Spearman rank correlation test was conducted. This study showed no significant relationship between hypertension self-management and blood pressure in the elderly in the working area of Jatinangor Community Health Center with P-value=0.319 (P>0.05) on systolic blood pressure and P-value=0.285 (P>0.05) on diastolic blood pressure. Despite the absence of a significant relationship, there was a negative correlation between self-management and blood pressure. Thus, improved self-management was associated with decreased or normalized blood pressure among the elderly. This study serves as a valuable reference for future researchers interested in exploring hypertension self-management interventions specifically tailored to the elderly population.

Abstract

Indonesia has experienced triple burdens of malnutrition characterized by undernutrition, overweight, and micronutrient deficiency problems. Adolescents are vulnerable population for these kind of problems because they tend to change theirs eating behavior along with physical and psychological development. This study aim to determine the correlation between eating behavior and nutritional status in adolescents at SMAN 22 Bandung. A cross-sectional design was used for the study, involving 277 participants randomly chosen from the population. Eating behavior variable was assessed using a modified version of the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ) which comprised 28 items covering restrained, emotional, and external aspects of eating behavior. Nutritional status was determined based on Body Mass Index (BMI). The Spearman Rank correlation test was used for bivariate analysis. Aspects of restrained eating behavior and external eating behavior significantly correlated with nutritional status with the value of (p = 0.003, r = 0.173) and (p = 0.003, r = -0.176) respectively. Meanwhile, there is no significant correlation between emotional eating behavior with nutritional status (p = 0.166, r = 0.081). Restrained eating behavior showed a positive correlation, indicating that individuals exhibiting higher levels of restrained eating behavior tended to have over-nutritional status. Conversely, external eating behavior demonstrated a negative correlation, suggesting that higher levels of external eating behavior were associated with poorer nutritional status.

Abstract

Increased histamine levels in tuna (Euthynnus affinis) during storage may pose health risks to consumers. However, the effects of storage duration on histamine levels are not yet fully understood. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the increase in histamine levels in mackerel based on its duration of storage at 4°C and its implications for public health. Methods: The experimental research had a completely randomized design. This study consisted of 7 treatment groups: negative control, positive control, and storage days 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Tuna were collected from the Kedonganan Fish Market and were randomly selected for inclusion in each group. Histamine levels were measured using a spectrophotometric method at a wavelength of 496 nm and analyzed using SPSS (USA, Chicago, IL) version 25.0 at a 95% confidence level (P <0.05). Results: There was a correlation between the length of storage and the increase in histamine levels in tuna (p = 0.001). The histamine levels in tuna on the second day of storage were 46.19 mg/kg, those on the fourth day were 46.57 mg/kg, those on the sixth day were 50.97 mg/kg, those on the eighth day were 54.76 mg/kg, and those on the tenth day were 58.52 mg/kg. The longer the tuna is stored, the higher the histamine levels are. The most striking increase occurred after the sixth day of storage. However, the histamine levels remained within the standard limits set by the government until the 10th day of storage. Conclusion: Storage for 4°C significantly increased histamine levels in tuna. The implications of this study include the need for fish storage management as well as the need for a consumer understanding of health risks due to prolonged fish storage and good fish selection.
