Abstract

The purpose of the research is to figure out how to translate idioms from English into Indonesian. The data were taken from a novel Crazy Rich Asian by Kevin Kwan and its translation into Kaya Tujuh Turunan by Cindy Kristanto. Other idioms do not have equivalent idioms, so they were translated using the free translation method.. The method of this study is a descriptive qualitative method research. There were 325 data which were analyzed qualitatively to determine the types of idioms and what semantic strategies were employed. The result shows that paraphrase dominated of all idiom types with 83 data, followed by synonym 73 data, Emphasis change 66 data, abstraction change 62 data and distribution change 41 data. The author conducted research on the relevance of understanding idioms and how to use them more effectively.

Abstract

Literary works often include the theme of death as part of the story. But it is seldom realized that the theme of death gave a very significant role to the storyline. It is undeniable that the author deliberately put the theme of death as the core issue to convey something behind the story. This article discussed the sociological study of literature related to the representation of death in contemporary literary works. A teen lit novel by John Green entitled Looking for Alaska is the source of the data in this article. This article limits the research by referring toward two problem formulations; first, how the representation of death can be expressed in the novel. Second, how the theme of death in the novel is related to the social phenomenon of American society, in this case related to the modern society view towards death. The researcher used Hagin's theory regarding the significance of death in literary works. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the study indicated that the theme of death has a significant role in the story where the death is present in the middle of the story or it is categorized as an intermediate of death (in Hagin concept). Death becomes meaningful in relation to the present, events that are still happening and have not been completed. Using Hagin's perspective, the role of death in Looking for Alaska is categorized into three; the manner of establishing the goal, obstacles, and the forming of death. Meanwhile, the relationship between death and the perspective of modern society is explored using Aries concept in the term Forbiden of Death. Death is considered a thing to be feared, so everyone tries to deny, reject, and stay away from death. Death is visualization for everyone who is haunted by emptiness, an emptiness that blinds vision and creates the fear.

Abstract

This study used a pragmatic study to discover the flouting of maxims in the “Five Feet Apart” movie. This descriptive qualitative research was done with observational method and non-participatory technique. Data collection was obtained from watching the “Five Feet Apart” movie by using pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing technique. Then, the data were analyzed and classified based on the type of flouting of the maxims according to the theory of Grice (1989). The highest frequency was the flouting maxim of relevance with a total of 8 data. Meanwhile, the lowest frequency was found in flouting maxim of manner and quantity with each having one data. The result of this research was that the researchers found the reason why the characters in Five Feet Apart movie flouted all the maxims. The characters flouted the maxims because they wanted to change the topic, sarcasm, and cover up their feelings. The conversations in Five Feet Apart movie could still be easily understood, even though the characters in this movie flouted all the maxims. Even with the flouting maxims, the plot of this movie became more interesting.
