Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential competencies that need to be developed in biology learning to help students analyze and solve problems logically. However, students’ critical thinking skills are still relatively low, indicating the need for learning models that can enhance student engagement and understanding. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning model assisted by mind mapping on students’ critical thinking skills in the digestive system topic among Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 12 Medan. This research employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of an experimental class taught using the Problem-Based Learning model assisted by mind mapping and a control class taught using the Problem-Based Learning model only. Data were collected through critical thinking tests administered as pretests and posttests and were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 48.03 to 75.61, while the control class obtained a posttest mean score of 71.78. Data analysis revealed a significance value of 0.015 < 0.05, indicating a significant effect on students’ critical thinking skills. This study contributes to the development of innovative learning models to improve students’ critical thinking skills in biology learning.

Abstract

Pangkalan Bun swamp waters have a diversity of aquatic plants that have the potential to be utilized by the community as a food source to support local food security. This study aims to examine the ethnobotany of aquatic plants as a food source to support local food security in Pangkalan Bun swamp waters. The study used a quantitative descriptive approach through interviews and documentation. Fifteen informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The informant selection criteria were the community around the swamp waters. The results showed that there were six types of aquatic plants utilized by the community as a food source, namely water spinach (Ipomea aquatica), genjer (Limnocharis flava), kelakai (Stenochlaena palustris), taro (Colocasia esculenta), pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) and watercress (Nasturtium officinale). The plant parts utilized include leaves, young stems, shoots, young flowers, and tubers through processing methods such as stir-frying, boiling, making coconut milk vegetables, fresh vegetables, or food additives. The ethnobotanical index analysis showed that water spinach had the highest UV value of 2.9 and an RFC of 1, indicating high levels of utilization and recognition by the community. Watercress had the lowest UV and RFC values, at 0.8. Aquatic plants have significant potential to support local food security because they are readily available and can be utilized as alternative food sources based on local resources.

Abstract

Limnobium laevigatum is a non-native aquatic plant with invasive potential due to its high adaptability and rapid growth in swamp waters, which may disrupt habitat balance. This study aimed to describe the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Limnobium laevigatum and to analyze its potential as an invasive aquatic plant in the swamp waters of Baru Village, Pangkalan Bun, Indonesia. The study was conducted from April to May 2026 using a qualitative descriptive method. A total of 14 specimens were collected directly from the study site and subsequently selected based on intact morphological characteristics, including complete leaves, petioles, and roots without visible damage. Eight selected specimens that met these criteria were used for morphological observations and anatomical preparations at the Fisheries Production Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Ecology, Universitas Antakusuma. The results showed that Limnobium laevigatum possesses floating rosette-shaped leaves with smooth green surfaces, a freely hanging fibrous root system, and reproduces through both vegetative and generative propagation. Anatomical observations revealed the presence of aerenchyma tissue in the petioles and leaves, which facilitates gas exchange and provides buoyancy. In addition, parenchyma tissue and vascular bundles support the transport of water and nutrients. These morphoanatomical characteristics indicate a capacity for adaptation to swamp environments, promoting rapid growth and dispersal. Therefore, Limnobium laevigatum has the potential to become an invasive aquatic plant in swamp ecosystems.

Abstract

Education is a vital foundation for the development of high-quality human resources in an era of scientific and technological advancement. Therefore, the learning process in schools is expected to produce students who are active, innovative, and capable of solving problems in their daily lives. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on student learning outcomes regarding ecosystem material at SMA Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan. This study employs a quantitative method using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The research sample consists of 36 students from class X-E, selected using random sampling. The research instruments consist of pretest and posttest questions to measure students’ cognitive learning outcomes. Data were analyzed using indicator achievement analysis, classical learning mastery, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the paired-sample t-test, and the N-Gain test. The results showed that classical learning mastery reached 100%, and 11 out of 12 learning indicators achieved mastery. The results of the hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, so H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. The improvement in learning outcomes was also reinforced by an average N-Gain value of 0.7005, which falls into the high category, as well as an effectiveness rating of 70%, classified as “fairly effective”. These results indicate that the Problem Based Learning model is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes on ecosystem material.

Abstract

Biology learning on the Human Movement System still relies on conventional media that are less interactive, causing low student motivation and suboptimal learning outcomes. This study aimed to develop a gamification-based Student Worksheet on the Human Movement System material that is feasible, practical, and effective in improving learning motivation and outcomes of Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Medan. This study used the Research and Development method with the 4D model comprising the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. Data were collected through validation questionnaires, teacher and student response questionnaires, motivation questionnaires based on the ARCS model, and pretest-posttest instruments. Feasibility and practicality were analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis, while improvement was analyzed using the Normalized Gain formula. The Student Worksheet obtained material expert validation of 94.64% and design expert validation of 85%, both categorized as highly feasible. Teacher response practicality reached 96.67%, categorized as very practical. The N-Gain scores were 0.79 for learning motivation and 0.81 for learning outcomes, both categorized as high. These results conclude that the gamification-based Student Worksheet is feasible, practical, and effective. This study contributes to innovative Biology instructional media development by demonstrating that gamification elements promote active and student-centered learning in secondary education.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low critical thinking ability of students in Ecosystem material due to teacher-centered learning and the lack of use of interactive media. The purpose of this study is to determine the critical thinking ability of students taught using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Zep Quiz media and its influence on the critical thinking ability of class X students of SMA Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan in the 2025/2026 Academic Year. This research is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample was selected through cluster random sampling. The critical thinking ability instrument was in the form of 10 essay questions. Data were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test. The results showed that students' critical thinking ability in the PBL class assisted by Zep Quiz (70.7 ± 7.33) was higher than the PBL class without Zep Quiz (65.6 ± 8.79). The results of the hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.01 (<0.05), so the use of the PBL model assisted by Zep Quiz media had a significant effect on students' critical thinking skills in the Ecosystem material. Zep Quiz media effectively supports the use of PBL in improving students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education has gained increasing attention as an interdisciplinary approach fostering creativity, scientific understanding, and problem-solving skills. This study aimed to evaluate students’ performance in a Biology–Art integrated STEAM project involving the construction of artificial waterfall models. A quantitative descriptive design was conducted with 43 students. Projects were assessed using eight dimensions: Design Planning, Composition and Aesthetics, Plant Elements, Animal Elements, Creativity, Neatness and Cleanliness, Functionality and Durability, and Project Presentation. Descriptive statistics and the Friedman test were used to analyze student performance across dimensions. Results showed high achievement in all dimensions, with mean scores ranging from 3.16 to 3.63 on a four-point rubric scale. Creativity achieved the highest score (M = 3.63 ± 0.49), while Composition and Aesthetics scored the lowest (M = 3.16 ± 0.72). Significant differences among dimensions were identified (χ² = 22.15, p = 0.0024), although the small effect size (Kendall’s W = 0.074) indicated relatively balanced competency development across STEAM domains. These findings show that artificial waterfall projects effectively integrate biological knowledge, artistic expression, and engineering design while developing interdisciplinary competencies.

Abstract

The increasing occurrence of introduced fish species in Lake Toba highlights the need to investigate their reproductive biology and condition factor to understand their invasive potential. This study aimed to analyze the reproductive biology and condition factor of Tiger Barb (Puntigrus partipentazona) in Lake Toba. The study was conducted from January to March 2026 at three sampling stations in Pangururan District using a survey method with purposive sampling. Data were collected through fish trapping using fish traps, water quality measurements, morphological observations, reproductive biology assessments, and laboratory analysis of condition factor. The results showed that P. partipentazona exhibited gonadal maturity stages (GMS) I - IV. The female gonadosomatic index (GSI 0,046 – 0,090%) was higher than that of males (0,006 – 0,020%) at all stations. The length at first maturity was greater in females (47,58 – 56,89 mm) than in males (42,81 – 46,13 mm). Fecundity ranged from 194 - 361 eggs and was positively correlated with body length and weight. Sexual dimorphism was observed in body coloration and shape. The condition factor ranged from 0,97 – 1,32, indicating good physiological condition and a favorable environment for growth and reproduction. These findings indicate a high adaptive potential of P. partipentazona in the Lake Toba ecosystem.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan Pupuk Organik cair adalah salah satu cara dalam meningkatkan pertumbuhan tanaman sawi (Brassica juncea L.). Pemberian Pupuk Organik Cair pada media tanam dengan konsentrasi larutan yang berbeda dapat memberikan respon pertumbuhan yang berbeda pada tanaman sawi. Tujuan dari Penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui konsentrasi larutan Pupuk Organik Cair terhadap pertumbuhan tanamana sawi (Brassica juncea L.). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) Faktorial dengan 5 kali ulangan, perlakuan terdiri dari 2 faktor yaitu faktor 1 adalah Pupuk Organik Cair, sedangkan faktor 2 adalah penggunaan konsentrasi larutan Pupuk Orrganik Cair dengan konsentrasi yang terdiri dari 5 perlakuan yaitu: K1= tanpa konsentrasi pupuk, K2 = perlakuan dengan konsentrasi 10% ml/ polibag, K3= perlakuan dengan konsentrasi 20% ml/polibag, K4= perlakuan dengan konsentasi 30% ml/polibag, K5= perlakuan dengan konsentrasi 40% ml/ polybag. Parameter yang diamati dalam penelitian ini adalah tinggi tanaman, dan jumlah daun tanaman sawi (Brassica juncea L.). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian Pupuk Organik Cair dilihat dari faktor KI menunjukkan hasil yang tidak berbeda nyata (α > 0,05), sedangkan dilihat dari faktor K2 menunjukkan bahwa pemberian pupuk organik cair dengan konsentrasi yang paling tinggi yaitu 40% ml/ polibag. Menunjukkan hasil yang relatif paling tinggi terhadap pertumbuhan tanaman sawi.
