Abstract

This study aimed to determine the use of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning in promoting learner autonomy and to reveal the perception of EFL students on the use of MALL in an EFL speaking context. This research was conducted with a descriptive-qualitative approach with a case study as the research design. The researcher collected the data by conducting interviews with open-ended questions via a google form with 15 students of the English Education Department at one of the universities in Bogor. The results show that the students give a positive response to the use of MALL which can help students to become autonomous learners. The use of MALL can also help students to develop their English speaking skills. To promote their ability to speak English, almost all students choose Youtube as their medium to improve their English speaking skills. Based on the results of the research above, it can be concluded that the use of MALL plays an important role in the development of students in learning to speak their English language, therefore it is necessary for students to make efforts to maintain the use of MALL as a medium for learning English, especially their speaking skills.

Abstract

This qualitative study examined the Ati narratives to preserve their culture and language. Using a validated questionnaire, the researcher interviewed Ati elders and tribal leaders in semi-structured and open-ended questions. The narratives of the Ati culture reveal a variety of themes, including danger and valor, life and survival, feasts and celebrations, faith and devotion, and resilience and heroism. The Ati, as indigenous peoples, were superstitious regarding indigenous healing, burial, and courtship. Their lives are fraught with danger, but they face it with bravery. Their existence is precarious, as they are constantly on the lookout for food. They demonstrate resilience in the face of arduous tasks such as charcoal production and exotic food hunting, disaster preparation, and interpersonal relations with the non-ethnic group. They are proud of their race because they have role models who influence their faith in God and their ancient elders' bravery during the war. They are overjoyed at the prospect of their race being the first to settle in the new land. Their close family ties contribute to their adaptability. Putting Ati-narratives into English language classes will help keep the rich culture and language of the Ati people alive.

Abstract

The study of politeness has become one of the most interesting topics being explored in the field of contrastive writing. This attention is brought by the very basic notion that politeness is culturally defined that varies from one context to another. The present study aims to determine the different and frequently used politeness strategies in business emails from China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Following the politeness framework of Danescu-Nicuescu-Mizil, Sudhof, Jurafsky, Leskovec, and Potts (2013), it was found that, generally, the three countries frequently used the please (start) politeness strategy in electronic communications. However, differences were reflected as China and Hong Kong showed the use of gratitude and deference strategies which did not appear in the samples from the Philippines. While in the Philippines, hedging expression appeared in the form of I suggest which seems to reflect a democratic approach. Such a strategy, which is absent in the data from China and Hong Kong, can be understood as the avoidance of giving a precise propositional content and leaving an option open to the addressee. Thus, this study asserts that politeness strategies in business communications exist. Variations may be evident, but one thing is for sure, politeness is universally observed even in virtual cross-cultural or intercultural engagements.

Abstract

Transgender has been recognized and is being a popular perspective nowadays, but still being debated in society as a gender issue. This real case of life was brought up in an epic movie by Tom Hooper, titled The Danish Girl. The purpose of this study is to discover Einar Wegener's transsexual character as he seeks his true identity, which leads him to become a woman. The movie is described and analyzed by using a qualitative descriptive method. Referring to the transsexualism theory, Einar Wegener’s character includes all of the characteristics of a transsexual, such as behavior confusion with the actual gender, the eagerness to be free from the main gender characteristics, willingness to be characterized as the opposite sex, etc. However, because transsexuality is a sexual deviation that differs from the norm, the main character must deal with negative consequences such as family problems, depression, insecurity, self-susceptibility, and health issues that lead to death due to his inability to survive after undergoing a second surgery. The movie idea which based on the true story depicts the complex problems arise in gender reassignment and its consequences toward personal life and the environment.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the phonological features of Philippine English (PE) in different speech styles. As argued, English has multiplicity of norms depending on the context of use, and that the occurrence of different speech forms in a variety of speech styles is a sociolinguistic reality. Thus, this study is an attempt to illustrate the segmental (vowels and consonants) and suprasegmental features (stress and intonation) of PE in read and spontaneous situations to offer a better understanding on the plurilithic, as opposed to monolithic, characteristic of the English language. To illustrate the reading style of the participants, they were tasked to read aloud word and sentence lists as well as passage Wolf. For the spontaneous discourse, speakers performed a monologue and provided answers to a speaking task which “similarly opened with the same questions” (Deterding et al., 2008, p. 4). It was found that, generally, the vowel features of PE are similar in different speech styles although /i/ and /u/ are excluded in the spontaneous speech. Likewise, the consonants in various speaking styles are almost the same, however, the voiceless fricative /Ɵ/ is a feature in the read speech but it is inconsistently realized as dental stop /t/ in spontaneous speaking situations. Moreover, PE is characterized by penultimate stress and rising intonation for all types of questions in both read and spontaneous speech styles. Based on the results, it appears that there are particular forms that are more convenient for speakers to use in a certain speech style. As English is homogenously used for communication, it has different forms depending on the context of use.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning strategies vary across context and cultural background. This paper examines and explores the  structure of vocabulary learning strategies of senior high school students in the Philippine where English is considered as a second language. A total of 341 senior high school (SHS) learners from twenty-five different institutions in the northeastern part of Luzon, Philippines participated in the online survey. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) using Maximum Likelihood and Promax techniques and reliability analysis using Cronbach Alpha were conducted to ensure its validity and internal consistency. From 15, the questionnaire was trimmed to seven vocabulary learning strategies namely: Cognitive Strategies, Word Listing, Word Encoding, Note-taking, Self-Initiation, Visual-Spatial Thinking and Selective Attention. This can explain 49 percent of total variance with acceptable level of reliability. The result of this study can be a baseline reference for policymakers on instituting policy changes in language education and a useful reference for future research on Filipino senior high school students’ vocabulary learning strategies especially in the context of new normal.
