Abstract

This study aimed at investigating students’ perception of online English exam during the Covid-19 pandemic at a pharmaceutical vocational high school in Riau. The study also explored the factors that influence students’ perception of online English exams. Employing a survey study design, it was found that students at the pharmaceutical vocational high school in this study were not similar in their perception to online English exams though they studied in the same school. The same educational and learning environment did not contribute to the students having similar perception to online English exams. Although a little bit more than half (51.7%) of the students had positive perception to online English exams, there is a significant number (46.6%) of the students who had negative perception to online English exams. Only 1 student had neutral perception to online English exams. This finding suggests that students may have different perceptions to a certain way of doing assessment or learning despite the fact that they study in the same school. With regard to factors influencing the students’ perception of online English exams, it was found that purpose of online English exams is a major influencing factor. Another major influencing factor, but with lower degree of influence, is institutional and environmental support to online English exams. These two major influencing factors are followed by less influencing factors, which include design of online English exams and security of online Exam.

Abstract

The study delves into the stylistic deviations present in E.E. Cummings' poem "She Being Brand," a work known for intentional phonetic style, creative spelling, and unique syntax. Stylistics, a linguistic branch, provides a systematic approach to comprehend literature by scrutinizing linguistic choices, especially crucial in understanding modern and postmodern literature's deviations from regular language patterns. The paper's objectives are to identify and analyze linguistic deviations in the poem, focusing on graphological, lexical, grammatical, and semantic aspects. Additionally, it aims to describe, analyze, and interpret linguistic parallelism, such as anaphora, asyndeton, and epiphora, unveiling their contribution to the poem's meaning. The study concludes with an original poem inspired by Cummings' work, showcasing an understanding and admiration for his distinctive style. The comprehensive methodology integrates qualitative analysis to explore the diverse stylistic choices within "She Being Brand." The poem serves as a genuine source reflecting Cummings' intentional and inventive language during the transformative literary era of modernism. Results and discussions reveal graphological deviations through capitalization, decapitalization, punctuation, and hyphenation, contributing to thematic depth and aesthetic appeal. Lexical deviations include compelling word combinations intensifying emotional depth. Grammatical deviations, like errors and enjambment, disrupt conventional structures, emphasizing the speaker's emotional state. Semantic deviations, including oxymoron, paradox, and metaphor, introduce layers of meaning. Linguistic parallelism, employing anaphora and asyndeton, enhances rhythmic flow and vividly portrays the speaker's interaction with the new car. The study concludes that Cummings' deliberate deviations enrich "She Being Brand," establishing him as a noteworthy contemporary poet. Abstract

This article suggests how many strategies are used in the teaching and learning process, teachers need to be more creative and innovative in creating new things. This strategy is not yet well known by students and is a new challenge for teachers to display. If you listen to the steps, it is almost the same as SQ3R. Still, the difference is that the PARS strategy is that students preview the text before reading, they look at headings; words that are bolded or underlined; and pictures, tables, graphs, and other key information and the main point is students preview the entire of passage or text before they read, suddenly the students generate some question based on what they have already previewed. Therefore, the students read to find out the answers to their questions. After reading, the students write a summary of the text that they have read. It is hoped that students can see big ideas and details that need support in the form of relational structures and are expected to foster students' interest in reading for the better and supported by the right strategy, and one of them is the use PARS Strategy.

Abstract

When people communicate via language, the listeners obtain a comprehension of the speaker's intentions. The purpose of this study was to examine the many sorts of illocutionary behaviours observed in concession speeches. The data was the concession speech of the two presidential candidates which were retrieved online. The study was a qualitative study backed by quantitative methodology. The data was analysed by categorising it using Searle's categorization of speech activities. Each category was thoroughly observed to find the illocutionary act and the illocutionary force associated with the utterance. It was realized that Nana Akufo Addo's assertives accounted for 31%, while John Mahama's assertives accounted for 46%. In terms of directives, Nana Akufo Addo delivered more directive act than John Mahama. Nana Akkufo Addo performed one commissive act, accounting for 3% of the total. Meanwhile, John Mahama performed 2 (5%) commissive acts. This act was the least common of the five acts. Expressive act accounted for the most illocutionary act in Nana Akufo Addo's speech, while it accounted for the second most in John Mahama's speech. Nana Akufo Addo made 4 declarative, while John Mahama made 2. The study is significant to theory and practice.

Abstract

This study investigated the existing levels of social presence, collaboration, academic performance, and student and faculty satisfactions and their relationships in the online distance learning (ODL) environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three hundred ninety-seven (397) students (male, n = 134; female, n = 263) and 253 faculty (male, n = 112; female, n = 141) from eight higher education institutions in Dumaguete City, Philippines, participated in the study. Data from the respondents were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. The results revealed that the students gathered high levels of social presence (wx = 3.57, SD = 0.61), collaboration (wx = 3.97, SD = 0.55), and student satisfaction (wx = 3.56; SD = 0.67) in ODL. Consequently, moderate levels of academic performance (wx = 3.26, SD = 0.53) and faculty satisfaction (wx = 3.10, SD = 0.39) were perceived by the students and faculty, respectively. Furthermore, Spearman’s rho correlation found that there were statistically significant relationships between social presence and collaboration (r = 0.56, p = <0.000001), collaboration and student satisfaction (r = 0.57, p = <0.000001), and social presence and student satisfaction (r = 0.70, p = 0.0000005). Moreover, student satisfaction and academic performance had a strong positive correlation (r = 0.80, p = <0.000001). Lastly, through the Mann-Whitney U test, faculty satisfaction did not have any significant relationship with student satisfaction (z = 9.23, p = <0.0001) and academic performance (z = 4.81, p = <0.0001).

Abstract

The study of children’s drawings has long been an interesting filed in linguistic research. Children’s drawings are an indication of their developmental progress, it is a gateway that offers a window into the children’s internal thinking and attitude. The present study focuses on unveiling the relationship of the images and themes found in the children’s drawings of the Marawi Siege, a war that occurred between the government forces and terrorists in the Southern Philippines in 2017. This study includes 40 drawings of the child-respondents who are residing in the temporary shelters in Boganga and Rorogagus, Lanao del Sur. The interconnection was based on two perspectives, namely: realistic and artistic. In realistic perspective, the drawings were analyzed based on realistic representations of the children of the visual images, in which themes were embedded. In artistic perspective, the attention shifted away from what the children were drawing to the creation process of the visual images and themes. Thus, this study propounds that the children's psychological process played a significant role in how they drew the scenarios in order to gain an understanding of the reality.

Abstract

Technological innovation has created various learning models and tools that can increase the effectiveness of the learning process. There are a wide variety of learning software and platforms designed to support teachers in their teaching process and help them create a sustainable learning environment. Research has shown that infusion of 'gamification' software can influence and improve student learning outcomes and create a positive learning environment. This article reports a survey study conducted among 32 students from 8D SMP N 36 Semarang who had experience using Kahoot! in the learning process. This study used the closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 10 statements regarding the students' perceptions for gamification approach and the use of Kahoot!. The questionnaire of the Likert Scale consists of 4 (four) alternative points, specifically: Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD). The four-choice scales were used to force respondents to choose one of the points because the points "Neutral" were not available. The results show that almost all participants have positive experiences when participating in learning process that integrates the gamification approach and Kahoot!. The majority of participants reported that they were able to be actively involved in their learning process while using Kahoot! platforms. Adaptive software and platforms like Kahoot! enable students to engage and actively participate in their learning process, and thus provide a more meaningful and rich learning experience.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the ability of the Grade 7 students in using prepositions of place by integrating Bitmoji 3-Dimentional Avatars. The participants were 64 Grade 7 students who were officially enrolled at Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades during the second semester of the Academic Year 2022-2023. Bitmoji is a free application and a website where users can design their 3-dimensional avatars. With its features, the avatars of the students were created and incorporated into the MS PowerPoint presentation slides about prepositions of place. The data on the students’ ability in using prepositions of place were gathered using a 30-item test based on the intended competencies of English 7. To support the findings, the student’s perceptions on the avatars were also gathered through unstructured interviews and pre- and post-questionnaire. Frequency, percentage, and mean, were used to treat the data gathered. Results reveal that the students’ mean score on their pre-test is 8.5 or Below Average, while 19.50 on the post-test or Above Average. Likewise, in the test of difference, the t-value of 13.80 with a probability of .001, which is lower than the .05 level of significance, implies that there is an evident improvement in the student’s’ ability in using prepositions of place with the integrated pedagogical features of Bitmoji Avatars. Thus, the study recommends that teachers should maximize applications, such as Bitmoji, for their engaging features, which assist the students as visual learners, and foster teaching grammatical points, such as prepositions.
