Abstract

This article reports the findings of a study analyzing the needs of Physics Education students to inform the syllabus design of English for Science course. The study employed a descriptive quantitative method and focused on present situation analysis, target situation analysis, and learning situation analysis. To collect the data for these analyses, a set of questionnaires was administered to sixty-four students, two lecturers, and three graduates. Data analysis involved the use of a percentage system and rating scale. The analysis revealed some significant findings related to the students’ needs. First, the students need the fours language skills and vocabulary in general science for the syllabus design. However, by rank, the skills to prioritize consist of reading, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. In addition, the students require some specific common-core abilities related to those skills, most of which are related to reading and writing skills. Lastly, the students want to learn those skills through the content in general science. Abstract

The study aims to investigate and explore the characterization interaction in the English language online learning based on the English lecturers’ perspective. The quantitative descriptive survey approach is conducted for the study. It gathered measurable or quantifiable data to conduct statistical analysis. 74 English lecturers are respondents to the structured questionnaire. It is based on a five-point Likert-type rating scale with 19 items statements created using Google forms and sent to English lecturers digitally through e-mail and electronic messages. Based on the finding, the interaction characterization involved creating teaching, cognitive, and social presence, raising English language learning engagement and pleasure, improving English learners’ learning advancement, and increasing persistence and retention of English language learners. The mean of 15 of the 19 items was more prominent than 3.0, suggesting that respondents usually agreed. The following four questions had a mean larger than 2.5, suggesting that respondents were typically apprehensive about them. Additionally, the survey indicated that just 3.84 means dividing a complicated subject into manageable components. It is considered beneficial interaction in the online environment. This research has implications for the construction of online learning environments, the role of English lecturers in online courses, and educational support to help English language learners accommodate to more active engagement patterns in online learning settings

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the phenomenon of misperception on adult EFL learners at STBA Technocrat. It aims to comprehend the sounds which are frequently misperceived as well as the types of misperception experienced by ten EFL learners in apprehending sound-alike words. This study is descriptive qualitative research that involves ten EFL learners majoring on English literature in semester six. The results show that EFL learners frequently misperceived vowels than consonants. Almost all of the participants experienced the three types of misperception, namely, deafness, mirage, and mutation, except for the one participant who did not experience mirage. The data show that there are several things that are able to influence participants’ perception. The first is the phonetics features of English speech sounds. According to the data, the writers discover that the participants experienced the misperception more towards sounds which have similarities on its phonetics features. The second is the phonological systems between English and Indonesian. The discoveries significantly show that the participants feel confused and are not familiar enough with the sounds that do not exist in their native language. The third is the inserted information. The more information is inserted, the less misperception will occur. The last is the participants’ grades of listening subjects (I-III). However, those grades could not be a benchmark of their ability of speech perception.

Abstract

This study attempts to find out the learner’s level of self-regulation in ESP online learning program during the period of Covid-19 pandemic. Self-regulation is concerned with the ability of learners to manage their own learning which subsequently yields positive impacts on their learning results. Learners make personal initiative, employ effective strategies to achieve personally meaningful learning objectives, and closely monitor their understanding to identify and eliminate any of comprehensible issues. This study applied explanatory sequential mixed approaches in which quantitative research was conducted prior to qualitative. The quantitative research was employed to collect general data and to obtain a picture of learners’ self-regulation. To this end, Online Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire (QSLQ) was utilized. The QLSQ contained six subscale elements including: environment setting; goal planning; time management; assistance seeking; task strategies; and self-evaluation. The survey was composed of 24 Likert-type scales to measure student’s ability to self-regulate their learning in online delivery format. The qualitative data was conducted through interviews to help explain and explore the phenomenon deeper. The interview question protocols for the interviews covered among others motivation in online learning, self-regulation strategies, and environment setting. The participants of the study were 147 ESP students of Informatics Engineering Study Program at a state polytechnic in Banjarmasin. The findings from quantitative data indicate that the students had a high level of setting goals in their learning, high awareness in environment structuring, good level of task strategies, high ability in time management, high awareness of help seeking and self-evaluation. The data from the interviews reveal that the students’ motivation remained constant during the pandemic, their confidence in learning increased, their learning strategies changed, and their learning environment also changed. This study hopefully will be useful for ESP educators and other policy makers in designing the instructional process in an ESP online setting.

Abstract

The following research examined the experiences and perspectives of five students who took a case-based critical reading and writing course. Many university students in Indonesia lack critical thinking skills due to our learning system, which places little emphasis on critical reasoning in assessing and solving problems. They are used to be taught to memorize information rather than examining, analyzing, and solving problems. In this regard, we designed a case study to examine our students' perceptions of the difficulties associated with case-based learning and their strategies for resolving the issues as they moved throughout their case-based learning. We chose five students who had taken the course and collected data from them to learn about their experiences and perspectives. We gathered information about their experiences through observation, note-taking, a survey, an analysis of their writing, and an in-depth interview. Our findings indicated that the students encountered difficulties working in groups, identifying appropriate cases and resolving them, and writing critical commentary for reflective writing. However, as the lectures continued, they overcame their difficulties by developing a collaborative spirit throughout the course, mastering the art of case construction, and paying close attention to their grammar when completing their writing assignments.
