Abstract

Sentences are fundamental in language learning. Indeed, it is mainly through sentences that speakers can express their meaning completely and clearly. Linguistic units that we already know before reaching the sentence level are words (for example, I don't know) and phrases or groups of words (for example, I don't know). Words and phrases cannot express meaning completely and clearly unless they function in a subordinate sentence or as a response to a statement. Types of Sentences According to the Completeness of their Elements. Viewed in terms of the completeness of their elements, they are divided into two, namely perfect sentences (major) and incomplete sentences (minor).

Abstract

A questionnaire based on Wheldall & Merrett’s survey, using a non-random sample was carried out among primary schools in Libya. The study intended to investigate the Libyan teacher’s perceptions of the most troublesome pupil behaviour commonly experienced. Of 89 questionnaires distributed to six primary schools, 84 were returned.  The result showed that more than 85% of Libyan teachers spend more time on problems of order and control than need be.  Behaviours such as lack of concentration, followed by out of seat, and talking out of turn were regarded by overall teachers as the most troublesome.  This result was based on the first and second choice of each question.  The average of class size was 23.70% of whom 3.88% were troublesome children, and of these 2.46% were boys.  However, male teachers found that girls were more troublesome than boys in their classes compared with female teachers.

Abstract

This article examines posts on the Instagram story status of artist NM whose sentences allegedly contain elements of defamation. The method used in this research is qualitative, namely describing data to determine elements that could tarnish someone's good name. Determining these elements requires forensic linguistic analysis, namely using linguistic evidence in law enforcement efforts. This evidence can be analyzed using lexical semantic analysis, grammatical semantics, pragmatic and sociopragmatic analysis, language style, as well as critical discourse analysis using Theo van Leeuween's theory which is part of forensic linguistic studies. Based on the analysis carried out, it was concluded that from a lexical semantics point of view, the words used in the uploaded sentences have a negative denotational meaning. Based on grammatical semantic analysis, this sentence means demeaning someone. Pramatically and sociopragmatically, the NM sentence contains 4 types of speech, namely representative, directive, expressive, and declaration based on the crime committed by DM. The language style used by NM uses sarcasm. Based on critical discourse analysis with Theo van Leeuween's theory, it uses inclusion with the discourse strategies of differentiation-indifferentiation, objectivation-abstraction, nomination-identification, and determination-indetermination.

Abstract

The study determined how the Senior School Certificate (S.S.C.) Physics Practical NECO examination items function differentially between male and female students and estimated the differential item functioning of the S.S.C. Physics Practical test items based on school type. It also ascertained the functionality of S.S.C. Physics Practical examination items between rural and urban dweller students. The research design adopted in this study was the descriptive survey research design. The population for the study was made up of all Senior Secondary Three (SS III) Physics students of Osun State in the 2017/2018 academic session—a total of 631 students selected through a multistage sampling procedure made up the sample. The NECO 2018 S.S.C. physics practical examination items were used to collect relevant data for the study. The chi-square likelihood ratio DIF method was adopted, and the mirt package was used for the analysis of collected data. The results showed that the proportion of DIF detected in the S.S.C. Physics practical examination under consideration was 8% (3 items) for sex, 5.4% (2 items) for type school and 32.4% (12 items) for school location. The study concluded that NECO physics practical examination items flagged moderately high incidence DIF with the location of the students. It is, therefore, recommended that NECO and other examination bodies that conduct such practical test needs to be conscious of students' location during test construction.

Abstract

The study "New Strategies in Applied Linguistic Research for Health Therapy" explores the critical role of linguistic strategies in enhancing therapeutic outcomes and improving patient communication within healthcare settings. By integrating qualitative and quantitative methods, the research highlights the effectiveness of metaphorical language, politeness strategies, and the strategic use of narratives in fostering patient engagement, satisfaction, and treatment adherence. The metaphorical language was found to bridge the gap between complex medical jargon and patient understanding, while politeness and empathy were essential in building strong therapeutic relationships. Using narratives gave patients a coherent framework to understand their health journeys, particularly in managing chronic conditions. Training healthcare professionals in these linguistic strategies could significantly enhance patient-centred care. The study underscores the importance of applied linguistics in health care and calls for further research and integration of these strategies into clinical practice to optimize health outcomes.
