Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (henceforth, CAR) is mainly carried out to prove that the application of Think Pair Share (henceforth, TPS) technique is able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery on synonyms and to describe the students’ responses towards the learning teaching processes of vocabulary mastery on synonyms through the application of TPS technique. This CAR was performed in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of three meetings excluded the pre-test and the post-test. The subjects of this research are the fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas in the Academic Year of 2021/2022. There are 21 students as the research subjects. The quantitative data analysis shows that the mean of the students’ score in the pre-test, formative test, and post-test increases continually after TPS technique was implemented in the learning teaching processes of English synonyms. The students’ total score in the pre-test is 1.252 and the pre-test mean is 59.62. The students’ total score in the formative test is 1.572 and the formative test mean is 74.86. The students’ total score in the post-test is 1.756 and the post-test mean is 83.61 There are five students  (23.8%) who attained score >75 in the pre-test, ten students  (47.6%) who attained score >75 in the formative test, and 17 students (81%) who attained score >75 in the post-test. The qualitative data analysis shows that the students are more active and enthusiastic in learning and mastering English synonyms after TPS technique was applied. The students gave positive responses towards the application of TPS technique in the learning teaching processes of vocabulary mastery on English synonyms. The researchers recommend that English lecturers/teachers implement TPS technique in order to improve their students’ vocabulary mastery on English synonyms.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the change in the perspective of new men on gender relations between men and women in the Hubula Dani tribe after cultural acculturation occurred. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach to the Hubula Dani community in Aso Lokobal District, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua. The research data consisted of primary data obtained directly from the field through field observations, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and secondary data obtained from various documents related to the research topic. Data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative technique. The results showed that the new pro-feminist and egalitarian men in the Hubula Dani community began to be more modern and open to progress as a positive impact of cultural acculturation through the influence of the Catholic church, local government, and educational institutions. They have authority as husbands who are responsible for the family as breadwinners in the nuclear family. They want to share or help the wife's role at home; give the wife access and control over resources; willing to help his wife take care of the children; respecting the wife's abilities and giving her the opportunity to work outside the home; avoid violence against wives but if violence does occur they do not overdo it and resolve the issue amicably; begin to be critical of non-egalitarian customs; willing to have many children as a joint decision; and provide equal opportunities for boys and girls to achieve higher levels of education.

Abstract

IWD or International Women's Day is a day that is celebrated worldwide every 8 March. Coordinated under internationalwomenday.com, IWD is an annual campaign carried out by various women's organizations around the world. International Women's Day carries the motto "think globally, act locally". #BeBoldForChange is the theme of the 2017 International Women's Day organization. The collective action of IWD is carried out at the local level such as Yogyakarta. In Yogyakarta, collective action was carried out by a joint Yogyakarta women's organization (Yogyakarta Women's Network) by presenting various traditional performances at the zero kilometer point. They performed a dance which was inspired by the Jampi Gugat dance, which means obstacles to a better life. This dance will describe the obstacles that women face towards a better life, such as fighting sexual violence to fighting for equality in the work environment. The massive women's campaign movement in commemorating IWD proves that there are universal values that are spread and carried out in the IWD campaign until it is commemorated by all networks of women's organizations in the world. This paper will explain how the value of this campaign has influenced the local women's social movement in Yogyakarta.
