Abstract

This study explores succession planning to ensure the long-term sustainability of family businesses, a critical issue given the high failure rate linked to ineffective leadership transitions. Focusing on Sedap Catering, a family business established in 1987 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, the research aims to analyze the stages and dynamics of succession, specifically how the founding generation applies strategies to potential successors. Family businesses are crucial to the Indonesian economy, but they often face challenges in maintaining leadership continuity. Theoretical frameworks include family business theory, succession planning, and stewardship theory, offering insights into the motivations of family leaders during the succession process. A qualitative approach is used with a single case study, involving in-depth interviews, observations, and document studies. Five key respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis is conducted using thematic analysis, triangulation, and member checking to ensure reliability. The results show that Sedap Catering’s succession process is informal yet structured, reflecting the family’s values of trust, continuity, and service quality. Successors are selected based on character, competence, and commitment, with gradual integration into the business and continuous evaluation. This method ensures smooth leadership transfer, strong employee loyalty, and family harmony. The study provides practical insights for family businesses in Indonesia and contributes to academic understanding of succession planning.

Abstract

This study examines how digital technology distraction affects employees’ cognitive load and work productivity, focusing on Generation Z employees at Telkom Indonesia Company within a hybrid work setting. Grounded in cognitive load theory, the research evaluates whether frequent notifications, multitasking, and overlapping digital activities heighten cognitive strain and reduce performance. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 108 respondents via online surveys, and purposive sampling was used to ensure a representative sample. The proposed model was analyzed using SmartPLS for the structural equation model with partial least squares, and process model 5 was applied to test mediation effects using SPSS. The findings show that digital technology distraction significantly increases cognitive load, and higher cognitive load subsequently decreases work productivity. In addition, digital technology distraction also has a significant direct adverse effect on work productivity. Mediation results indicate partial mediation, confirming that cognitive load is a central mechanism through which digital distractions translate into productivity loss. The study advances workplace digital-distraction literature by validating cognitive load theory in a real-world hybrid work environment and by providing evidence specific to Generation Z employees, who face high digital exposure at work. In practice, the findings highlight the need for digital exposure management and attention regulation strategies to sustain Generation Z performance in hybrid workplaces.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of knowledge management and innovative work behavior on employees' competencies and organizational performance in Indonesia's electronic manufacturing sector. This research is driven by the ongoing disparity between labor market requirements and the qualifications of the available workforce, especially in Batam City, Indonesia, where inadequate competency levels hinder the workforce's capacity to fulfill industry demands. This research is unusual in its emphasis on electronic manufacturing firms in Batam City, Indonesia, an environment that has received less scholarly scrutiny, particularly regarding human resource practices and their relationship to organizational performance. To ensure representativeness, the study employed a probability sample method, specifically non-probability purposive sampling, to recruit 210 respondents from diverse departments. Data analysis in this study was conducted using SmartPLS, with data collected via a survey. The results show that knowledge management and innovative work behavior significantly improve employee competency, while innovative work behavior also positively affects organizational performance. However, knowledge management and employee competency do not significantly influence organizational performance. Additionally, employee competency does not mediate the relationships between the variables. In conclusion, innovative work behavior plays a key role in enhancing organizational performance, whereas knowledge management mainly contributes to improving employee competency rather than directly impacting performance. The study emphasizes the need to fortify human resource management strategies and advocates establishing a triple helix innovation program that fosters collaboration among government, corporations, and universities to improve employee competencies, attract investment, and bolster Indonesia's economic growth.

Abstract

This study investigates whether cross-border mergers and acquisitions enhance the efficiency of Indonesian private commercial banks, an issue that remains inconclusive in the emerging-market literature. The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of foreign ownership on efficiency and identify its key determinants, specifically by testing the validity of efficiency and synergy theories in an emerging market context. Quarterly financial data from 2017 to 2024 for 10 banks, 5 foreign-acquired and 5 non-acquired, are analyzed. Bank efficiency is measured using data envelopment analysis, which assesses technical, pure technical, and scale efficiency. To estimate causal effects, propensity score matching combined with a difference-in-differences approach is used, while Tobit regression is used to examine determinants of efficiency. The results show that cross-border mergers and acquisitions do not lead to statistically significant overall efficiency gains, despite heterogeneous effects across individual banks. Furthermore, bank size has a significant negative effect on efficiency, while profitability and capital adequacy exhibit mixed effects. These findings suggest that foreign acquisitions do not automatically improve bank efficiency, highlighting post-merger integration challenges. Theoretically, this study contributes by challenging the synergy theory, demonstrating that ownership transformation does not automatically yield operational synergies, and enriching the banking efficiency literature with a robust, high-frequency framework. In practice, these insights serve as a crucial strategic guideline for bank management to prioritize post-merger cultural and operational integration over simple scale expansion, while also assisting financial regulators in formulating more prudent cross-border banking acquisition policies.

Abstract

Despite the existence of motivating and compensation systems, inconsistent work discipline frequently limits employee performance in local government entities. Using work discipline as a mediating variable, this study examines the direct and indirect effects of work motivation and compensation on employee performance. This study uses a convenience sample of 150 government personnel from 18 sub-district offices in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to examine the data. The results show that work motivation and compensation significantly influence both work discipline and employee performance, while work discipline also directly affects employee performance. Work discipline acts as a key mediator in the relationships between work motivation, compensation, and employee performance. This study contributes to the development of theories in human resource management and organizational behavior, particularly by explaining the relationships among work motivation, compensation, work discipline, and employee performance. In practical terms, the findings of this study have important implications for government agencies, specifically subdistrict offices in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, Indonesia, as they work to improve employee performance. Nevertheless, the cross-sectional design and single-district emphasis of this study are its limitations. Therefore, future research is recommended to test this model across different regions and organizational settings.

Abstract

A convenience that comes with the rapid expansion of buy now, pay later use also increases the risk of impulsive spending and debt. This research aims to examine how consumer personality traits, such as mindfulness, impulse-buying tendency, and pain of payment, influence buy now pay later use and affect the financial and psychological well-being of Generation X, Y, and Z in Indonesia. To conduct the quantitative portion of the study, a purposive sampling approach was used to survey 473 Indonesians from Generations X, Y, and Z who have experience with buy now, pay later services. A structural equation model using a partial least squares-structured equation model with SmartPLS. The results indicate that mindfulness is more likely to be used now, with pay later, and that this behavior is guided by greater intention and planning, as shown by a favorable and substantial direct influence of mindfulness on this behavior. However, the association between mindfulness and buy now, pay later is not substantially mediated by impulsivity or financial self-control. Pain of payment is found to positively moderate the correlation between impulse buying tendency and buy now, pay later, thereby strengthening the effect under certain payment conditions. Furthermore, overall well-being is directly and positively impacted by buy now, pay later. However, anticipated future financial security does not affect overall well-being. Nevertheless, buy now, pay later indirectly affects overall well-being through current money management stress. Understanding psychological factors that impact digital financial behavior and its offerings provides important recommendations for regulators and buy-now-pay-later providers, including the need for financial stress management, service transparency, and consumer protection.

Abstract

This study examines the relationships between entrepreneurial leadership, digital literacy competence, and business performance, with business innovation as a mediating mechanism. Previous research has frequently examined leadership or digital capabilities separately. 157 owners or managers of micro, small, and medium enterprises in West Java, Indonesia were selected through non-probability purposive sampling. A seven-point Likert scale was used to gather the data. Structural equation modelling–partial least squares was used for analysis. The findings demonstrate that business performance and innovation are positively affected by entrepreneurial leadership. Digital literacy competence has a beneficial impact on company innovation but has no impact on business performance. Business innovation positively affects business performance and significantly mediates the effects of entrepreneurial leadership and digital literacy competence on business performance. These findings highlight innovation as a key pathway through which leadership and digital capabilities improve performance, underscoring the importance of innovation-oriented leadership development and the strategic deployment of digital capabilities to strengthen the competitiveness of micro, small, and medium enterprises. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of dynamic capabilities theory by demonstrating how entrepreneurial leadership and digital literacy competence enhance firm performance through innovation as a reconfiguration mechanism. In practice, the findings provide policymakers and micro, small, and medium enterprises development programs with insights to focus on strengthening entrepreneurial leadership and innovation-oriented digital capabilities to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of engineering-sector micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Abstract

This study investigates the key drivers of environmental performance in micro, small, and medium enterprises in Surabaya, Indonesia, focusing on green human resource management, green transformational leadership, organizational commitment, and green innovation. The research also examines green organizational culture as a potential moderator influencing the relationships between these factors and environmental outcomes. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 188 respondents to micro, small, and medium enterprises and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results indicate that organizational commitment has the strongest impact on environmental performance, suggesting that employees who feel a deep connection to and sense of responsibility for their organization are more likely to adopt eco-friendly practices. Green innovation also plays a pivotal role by facilitating the development of sustainable products and processes that enhance resource efficiency. Additionally, both green human resource management and green transformational leadership contribute positively, supporting broader sustainability objectives. Interestingly, the analysis of moderation effects suggests that a highly structured green organizational culture may, in some cases, constrain the influence of green human resource management on environmental outcomes, indicating that overly rigid cultural expectations may not always align with the operational capacities of resource-limited micro, small, and medium enterprises. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of designing sustainability initiatives that are both strategically ambitious and practically feasible for a small enterprise.

Abstract

Green purchase intention is largely shaped by psychological factors that influence how consumers perceive and evaluate environmental issues. The present study investigates how environmental sensitivity and health consciousness drive the emergence of green purchase intention, while considering attitude toward green products as an intervening variable. The study was conducted among Avoskin consumers in Indonesia, and 152 participants were selected through purposive sampling. The analysis employed SmartPLS to assess measurement validity, construct reliability, and hypotheses. Empirical evidence demonstrates that environmental sensitivity and health consciousness significantly contribute to the development of attitudes toward green products and green purchase intention. Moreover, these attitudes directly influence green purchase intention. Attitude toward green products mediates the relationship between environmental sensitivity and health consciousness and green purchase intention. This study extends the theory of planned behavior and the value-belief-norm theory within the clean beauty industry in an emerging market. By validating the intervening role of green attitudes, the research clarifies the cognitive mechanism through which abstract psychological traits (environmental sensitivity and health consciousness) translate into concrete behavioral intent. For eco-friendly brands like Avoskin, these findings offer a blueprint for targeted marketing strategies. Marketing campaigns should simultaneously emphasize ecological benefits and personal health advantages, such as non-toxic ingredients or skin safety.

Abstract

Modern organizations need to understand the drivers of sustainability to remain competitive. This study examines sustainable performance by considering the roles of green transformational leadership and green organizational culture, with total quality management acting as an intervening variable. This study involved 161 respondents from micro, small, and medium enterprises in the batik sector in Yogyakarta, Indonesia as the unit of analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using Smart PLS 4.0. The results indicate that green organizational culture plays a significant role in strengthening both sustainable performance and total quality management. While no direct relationship is found between green transformational leadership and sustainable performance, this leadership style has been shown to support improvements in total quality management practices. The results show that total quality management enhances sustainable performance and serves as a mediating mechanism linking green transformational leadership and green organizational culture to sustainable outcomes. This suggests that sustainable performance is shaped not only by environmentally oriented values and leadership but also by the effectiveness of integrated quality practices. The results lend support to both the resource-based view and the natural resource-based view, emphasizing that organizational factors can be leveraged as strategic resources to enhance and sustain competitive advantage over time. In practice, this study recommends strengthening green culture and leadership by improving the implementation of total quality management, which supports sustainability.
