Abstract

Culture and people are two things that cannot be separated. The existence of culture because it is related to the existence of humans in a place who do activities together from generation to generation to be an entrenched habit. Society as an important element culture has role to create a civil society (ethical and civilized society). Men and women as 'containers' of culture have the same responsibility in shaping civil society. However, the reality in society is different. Social inequality is still common. Inequality and discrimination based on sex still exist, including various women's problems that occur related to impoverishment, discrimination and violence against women in almost all industrial sectors. Impoverishment is reflected in the absence of spouse allowances for female workers, low wages, and no overtime pay. The type of research is descriptive research that will present a description of the two characters that each individual naturally possesses. This research will prove that humans are equipped with two characters (given) from God— feminine and masculine. If these two characters can be balanced optimally, all forms of discrimination will be able to be avoided so that each individual can work together in harmony to create a civil society.

Abstract

The term Islam Wetu Telu is still controversial because the term is considered to be made up by colonialism to divide Islam in Lombok. Thus, the original religion of the Sasak tribe needs to be explored and studied so that the local people of Lombok understand the origins of religion and its cultural roots. The term Wetu Telu is generally understood as the belief of the local Sasak community who have not received a full understanding of Islam. The explanation of Wetu Telu will be described based on the views or opinions of insiders and outsiders. This paper will describe the traces of Islam wetutelu; traces and developments in Gumi Sasak Lombok. This paper is a literature review by examining some of the main references from previous research on Sasak Islam located on the island of Lombok. From the results of the study, it is concluded that Wetu Telu, which is considered a local belief of the Sasak people of Lombok, is a syncretic form of the previous belief (Hindu-Buddhist-Boda) which is often confronted with the Islamic belief of Time Lima. Outsiders only look at the terminology aspect which is often different from the understanding of the Wetu Telu adherents themselves so that there is a misunderstanding of the meaning of Wetu Telu. As for Wetu Telu adherents, the term is only a symbolic one that has a broad meaning and interpretation

Abstract

This paper intends to explain the clove cultivation project in South Lampung during the New Order era. More specifically, the Lampung Clove Development Project (PPCL) was discussed in the 1974-1987 period. This project was carried out as a form of commodity diversification from coffee to cloves. Coffee plants that are no longer productive are replaced with cloves. For a long time, cloves have been an important commodity. Clove cultivation in Lampung can be traced back to the late 19th century as part of the colonial expansion of cultivation in people's gardens. As a result, clove cultivation quickly spread to several areas in Lampung, not only on the coast/near rivers but in non-coastal areas as well as planting cloves. This research uses historical method which consists of heuristic, critique, interpretation, and historiography stages. The sources used are archives, books, newspapers, and oral history interviews. Through these sources, it can be seen that prior to the disbandment, clove cultivation carried out under the coordination of PPCL was able to improve the standard of living of farmers. However, due to overlapping land ownership issues and the large number of land owners selling their land, PPCL eventually disbanded.

While in other big cities there are already associations to accommodate Chinese Moslem people, but in Surakarta, which is a big city, there is no forum to gather these people. Abstract

Historical writing is growing in terms of themes, objects of study, sources, methods, and methodologies. The presence of novelty in historical writing demands a relatively new approach. Writing history as a representation of a series of historical research processes is actually the fruit of the process of interpreting all traces/evidence that has arrived at historians. The growing use of visual sources among historians simultaneously requires that historians have the tools to interpret these sources. Approach that can be used in interpreting this visual source is the semiotic approach. Concepts in semiotics, inter alia, the bilateral concept of sign: signifier and signified and denotationconnotation are very useful to be used as analytical tools and help develop explanations. The development of the history of appearance has also become another way for the use of a semiotic approach in historical writing. The dimension of semiotics is expected to be able to further confirm the nature of history in interpreting, explanating and understanding.

Abstract

Women, nature, ghost, and taboo are the main discourses related to magical realism in “Burak Siluman”, a novel by Moh. Ambri. In Burak Siluman, women (the main sign) were connected to the discourse of nature, ghost, and taboo. In it, women represent the suppressed desires of the lower class for wealth, position, honor wrapped in narratives of fascination, search, wandering, misfortune, and a curse. Discourses on the supernatural, half-ghost, and taboo legends in the novel are important traditional realities that are studied and seen by the workings of the concepts of magical realism in the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies. The main problem is: how does the concept of magical realism affect the construction of the world (physical and supernatural), especially related to ghost and taboo narratives in “Burak Siluman”. Thus, the main objective of this research is the interaction of the influence of magical realism on narratives construction related to women, nature, ghost, and taboo. To resolve the issue, the concept of contemporary magical realism is used from a postcolonial perspective. The results of this study is the placement of the "between" space (magic in rational) which is represented in the wandering figure is the core idea of magical realism in “Burak Siluman”.
