Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze the term addresses which are used by the characters which come from different culture and different status in “Anna and the King” movie and to analyze the reasons of the characters of choosing particular addressing term in “Anna and the King” movie. In conducting of the research, the researcher uses the qualitative research. The data are collected from the dialogue on “Anna and the King” movie. The researcher observes the dialogue and writes down the manuscript which uses the form address. The data are collected by doing an observation on “Anna and the King” movie which will be played for several times and then write the data manuscript which are needed in conducting the research. There are some term of address based on Braun theory which are found in “Anna and the King” movie. The term of address are; Firstly, Kinship terms (KT) which shows blood relations and for affine. Secondly, General forms which need not be regarded as particular titles and are in common use. The third, the title is bestowed, achieved by appointment (such as Mr. Prime Minister). Next, the abstract noun which belong to some abstract quality of addressee (such as  Your Excellency, Your Honor, Your Grace), words for certain types of relationship (such as colleague, neighbor, friend) and lastly, the forms of address define addresses as father, brother, wife, daughter of someone else by expressing the addressee relation to another person (such as son of teacher).

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the social variation of language based on level of education, type of work, and a social institution on Facebook users with the age range of 20-50 years. The source of the data in this study was status written on social media in this case Facebook. The data collecting technique was content analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that the educational background, the type of work which is owned as well as social institution belonging to the users of the language are very influential in content writing, word choice and writing text in communication. Although, those are not only the usually factors because there were others influenced factors such as psychology, writing style, and others.

Abstract

This study is discussing about the types of English imperative used in notices, the way of constructing English imperative and Indonesian imperative, and the reason of translation procedure are being applied. A Qualitative method is applied to answer the research problems. Data of the research were taken from some notices as the SL that found around Cahaya Madani Banten Boarding School along with their translation into Indonesian text (TL) used as the data source. The result shows that there are three types of imperative sentence of English imperative sentence in notices found in SMAN CMBBS translated from English into Indonesian: negative command, request, and positive command. Seeing from the process of imperative constructions of the SL, it can obviously be stated that it is formed by syntactical process, whereas in TL it is formed by morphological process that is by attaching the marker. The result also shows that there are four types of translation procedure used in this study. All of them are oriented towards the target language. Those procedures are: borrowing, modulation, transposition, and literal translation.

Abstract

This research is aimed to get deep understanding about the development Curriculum in Homeschooling of Primagama Serang. The research uses qualitative research with case study as the method. Subjects of research are principals, academic staff, teacher, and students of Homeschooling Primagama Serang. Data collecting technique for this research are observation, interview, and documentation. The result of research shows that Homeschooling of Primagama Serang has run its curriculum which integrated to 2013 Curriculum. This school has also improved the competence of the teachers about 2013 curriculum, and facilitates them with the sophisticated learning media.

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether English teachers at Senior high schools in the City of Serang have carried out learning based on the procedures for selecting learning materials before it begins to teach. In this study, the researchers used qualitative research. The instruments of this study are observation, documentation, questionnaire, and interview. The teachers and students took part in completing questionnaires and interviews for the purpose of study.  The final goal of this study is that English teachers have certain theory and strategy in selecting materials that will be brought into classroom. The result of this study showed that the teachers designed the activities in teaching and learning based on curriculum, but most of teachers of Senior High School in Serang City did not use the theories and procedure to select the materials in teching learning process. The result also showed that the students were not interested in reading materials, and understood the reading text easily or they had low motivation in reading. To ovecome this, it needs special training for teachers, and the schools should have literature facility of self-access center.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the translation techniques of subtitling used on Trolls movie. This research use a qualitative research. The content analysis is used as a method to identify and analyze the translation techniques in Trolls movie. Every utterance in five scenes of Trolls movie are the unit of analysis of this research. The source language is English and the target language is Indonesian Language. The result proves that the translation technique that mostly appears on Trolls movie (2016) is reduction with 8 data (26.67%). It seems that this technique is used to compress the information from the source language so that it will not be too long because it will be applied in subtitle; it results the shortest translation version to be applied to movie or film subtitle so that it will be easier for the viewers to catch the information and it will not distract the visual from the film that is being shown; and it can avoid the redundancy of the source language.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the SpongeBob movie with the title SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water Food Fight. It is to identify the politeness strategies applied by the main characters in SpongeBob Square Pants. The researcher uses qualitative research. The data was taken from Video movie in SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water Food Fight. The result showed that Bald on record strategy is the most frequent strategy (14 out of 42 total data). It is followed by positive politeness strategy (12 out of 42), Off-Record strategy (8 out of 42) and Negative politeness (7 out of 42). This film prefers to apply bald-on record in conveying their utterances to the other, especially Mr. Crabs toward SpongeBob and Patrick as employee in his office. It concludes that there is a good relationship between SpongeBob and Patrick, SpongeBob and Mr. Krab, so the conversation used positive politeness.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the improvement of motivation and reading skill by using literature circles in SMAN 1 Cinangka. The researcher used classroom action research. The sample of this research is students who sit in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Cinangka with 35 students. There are three cycles which was used by the researcher.  In order to improve the motivation and reading skill, literature circles was implemented in four weeks. In the last circle pre-cycle and post cycle were compared. The researcher found that there is significant improving of motivation and reading skill by using literature circles. The first cycle students reading skill improved 42,9%, and the students  motivation improved 41,%. The second cycle gradually students reading skill improved 68,6%, and the students motivation improved 80,%. The third cycle students reading skill improved 91,4%, and the students motivation improved 91,4,%. It means that there is significant improvement of motivation and skill which focused on discerning main idea, specific information, understanding the sequence, and inference, in SMAN 1 Cinangka by using literature circles. All these suggest that improving reading motivation and skill by using literature circles is highly encourage.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the correlation between controllers’ aviation knowledge mastery, listening comprehension and ICAO English Language Proficiency (IELP) at Jakarta Air Traffic Services Centre (JATSC).  This research focused on controllers as the homogeneity respondent hence the random sampling was the suitable way to get the data.  Respondents were selected without taking account of anything.  The researcher used quantitative approach method to carry on the project because it was believed that the data would be numerical thing.  Meanwhile variable instrument that researcher deployed namely a test.  The test itself provided for respondents was implemented into three items.  Having got the data after finalising the test, it was analysed by using Product Moment Correlation.  The data then was calculated using that method and the result was r calculation 0.371535165 and it was higher than 0.349 and it meant that there was correlation between controllers’ aviation knowledge mastery, listening comprehension and IELP.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to find the correlation between vocabulary and sentence structure mastery towards students’ writing skill. This research also calculates how strong the correlation by analyzed and computed using Pearson Product Moment. The method used in this research is quantitative research method by implementing a correlation study research design that has three variables. The first variable is vocabulary mastery, the second is sentence structure mastery, and the third is students’ writing skill in descriptive text as dependent variable. The researcher gives three tests to 40 students. That test is given to measure student’s abilities according to the three previous variables. The result of this research is the use of correlation between vocabulary mastery and sentence structure mastery toward students’ writing skill. The finding of the research proves a moderate level of correlation. This study suggest that the students have to learn vocabulary mastery and sentence structure mastery, and the English teacher should prioritize it so students’ writing skill will improve.
