Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of cognitive and focus on form instruction toward vocational high school EFL learners’ achievement of grammar in vocational school at SMKN 3 Kota Serang. The researcher used quantitative research implementing the true experimental design as research method. There were two groups used in this research, the mainly; the experimental and control group. Sample of this research is students of SMKN 3 Kota Serang, 39 students selected for experimental group, and 38 students selected for control group. The research found that there is significant influence of cognitive and focus on form instruction toward vocational high school EFL learners’ achievement of grammar, it was indicated by the value of t-test higher than the value of t-table (0.950 > 0.000) at the level of significant of α 0.05 and the degree of freedom of 75. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. From those findings, it can be concluded that the use of cognitive and focus on form instruction is effective to influence learners’ achievement of grammar in vocational school at SMKN 3 Kota Serang. All these suggest that the use of cognitive and focus on form instruction in the class of English is highly encouraged.

Abstract

This study discusses about the teaching of English pronunciation practices to the students of Early Childhood Education Study Program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. This study was qualitative research which carried out in the learning of the English Education for Early Childhood subject of Early Childhood Education Study Program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. The researchers chose tongue twisters as the material used to train students' ability to pronounce their vocabularies in English. The result shows that tongue twister exercises can improve their English vocabulary pronunciation skill; and their abilities to pronounce every vocabulary will be stored in the child's memory and become the main standard in the next learning process.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze English code-switching in indonesian magazine articles. It was to to identify the types of the English-Indonesian code-switching in Gadis magazine no. 04 April 2017. The researcher used qualitative research. This main article consists of 10 subtopic articles. The writer collected the data by reading the Gadis magazine and underlined the English code-switching happened in the writing of the articles. The types of code-switching occured were inter-sentional switching accounted for 13% and intra-sententional switching accounted for 87%. The code-switching occured in the boundary of words, sentences, and combination of Indonesian word and English word in a sigle word. The conclusion of this research was code-switching is accepted by Indonesian people in society to convey their ideas or meaning or in this case, to attract readers.

Abstract

The objectives of mini research done the writer are to describe the linguistic forms of the register used in soccer column of “Top Skor” newspaper and to describe the meaning of register used in soccer column of “Top Skor” newspaper.  The writer uses descriptive qualitative in conducting this research.  This is due to the fact that the purpose of this research is describing the facts or phenomena systematically and accurately. In this research, the data are taken from ‘Top Skor column. The data of the research are sentences containing the register words and phrases used in soccer column’s language in ‘Top Skor’ newspaper. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method. The ways are searching and collecting the newspapers. The writer analyzes the data by classifying the data which can be categories as the register, analyzing the data by identifying the linguistic form of the words and phrases, analyzing the context of situation of the data, identifying the differences between lexical and contextual meaning, drawing conclusion and suggestion based on the data analysis. The writer found 46 data of word (42 nouns,  2 verbs and 2 adjectives). The percentage is around 64% of the total findings (60% noun, 2.7% verb and 2.7% adjective). The writer finds the high frequency data of register meaning are in contextual meaning. The analysis based on the content of word shows that 55 contextual meaning that covers 78.6% of the total findings.  There are 15 lexical meaning that covers 21.4% of the total findings.

Abstract

This study was aimed at identifying the internal factors and external factors contributing to Lampungese language maintenance in Cikoneng, Banten. When these factors are well identified, they can be used to determine certain action plans so as to effectively maintain and promote the native language. Applying a qualitative approach, the study was performed by using observation, interview, questionaires, and document study techniques. The data and information obtained were qualitatively analyzed, summarized, and compared to relevant theories and studies to draw conclusion and recommendation. It appears that the internal factors are (1) Continuity of mother tongue transfer, (2) Loyalty to mother tongue, (3) The role of Cikoneng young generation, and (4) Educational and cultural institutions. Whilst, the external factors are (1) Accommodative attitude of Sundanese and Javanese people, (2) Positive attitude of Sundanese and Javanese young generation, (3) Geographical location: Cikoneng as an open society, and (4) The role of Anyer High School. It seems that Banten Government and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University could play a very important role in order to assure that Cikoneng Lampungese language will be properly maintained.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of translation procedures in translating Full Moon in the Midwest, Is it the Sound of Pines, and The Moon poems. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach. This was done that researchers can describe the use of translation strategies applied by translators. Data sources are three poems by Taufik Ismail entitled Pantun Terang Bulan di Midwest, Adakah Suara Cemara and Bulan, and translated into English by McGlynn with the title Full Moon in the Midwest, Is it the Sound of Pines and The Moon. In analyzing the data, all translated poems and original poems were analyzed, and the results of the analysis were compared to see in what aspects each of the poems of the translation and poem was equivalent and faithful. The result shows that in terms of meaning, aesthetic values, and structure, Full Moon in the Midwest, Is it the Sound of Pines and The Moon is the result of a faithful translation from Pantun Terang Bulan di Midwest, Adakah Suara Cemara, and Bulan. Each target language successfully defends the meaning of the source language. In other words, the translation of the three poems can meet fidelity.

Abstract

The research conducts to understand the translation procedures used in the translation of the thesis abstracts of postgraduate students. This research is qualitative. The data collected from students’ thesis abstract of Indonesia Language and Learning Technology programs. The result shows that there are five translation procedures applied, such  borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, and modulation; and the most dominant procedure used in translated thesis abstracts is literal translation with 9 sentences (32,14%), followed by modulation, borrowing and transposition with each of them is (17,85%), and the last is calque (14,28%).

Abstract

This research is focusing on the level of Foreign Language Anxiety that experienced by students. In this research, the researcher was use the Qualitative research as the method in implementing case study. The sources of data were 30 students of the second semester of Banten Jaya University. For collecting data that used in this study include classroom observation, questionnaires and interview. The questionnaire used to obtain specific information data was gathered from the participants by FLCAS of Horwitz et all (1986). From the result of FLCAS questionnaire, there were 10 students who felt very anxious with percentage 33.33%, 8 students felt anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 8 students felt mildly anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 4 students felt relaxed with the percentage 13.33% and there was no student who felt very relaxed. Then, the result of WAT questionnaire were 7 students felt very anxious with percentage 23.33%, 8 students felt anxious with the percentage 26.67%, 9 students felt mildly anxious with the percentage 30%, 6 students felt relaxed with the percentage 20% and there was no student who felt very relaxed. Based on the findings of the present study, several conclusions can be made: First, students’ anxiety in speaking showed that the students never felt quite sure of themselves when they were speaking in foreign language class. Second, students’ anxiety in writing above showed that most of students avoided writing in English.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form of hegemony of the employer's power against the servants on short story Aku dan Mereka Berbeda. The Post-colonialism analysis was used to obtain in-depth understanding and information about the form of hegemony of the employer’s power conveyed by story. Source of data were taken from the short story entitled Aku dan Mereka Berbeda written by Abdul Latief. The short story itself was contained on a short stories collection Melihat tanpa Mata published by Gong Publishing in 2010. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded three main characters that play a role in Abdul Latief's short story as figures reflected on colonialism. The employer figure is shown as a colonial nation, a servant figure as a colonized nation, and the author figure as a freedom fighter. The short story also conveys an ideological hegemony of white skin supremacy. The hegemonic aspect of power is also evident in this short story with the depiction of employers as the upper class and the servant as the lower class. The gender hegemony can also be seen in this short story through the depiction of women as lowly and oppressed domestic servant.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the types of borrowing technique in the novel “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell, describing the dominant type of borrowing technique, describing the dominant word of borrowing technique, found the literature meaning in the borrowing word and found the implementation of borrowing technique in teaching translation. This research applied the qualitative research method by using content analysis research design. The data of this research were collected manually from the Novel “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell. The data found in the novel are pure borrowing and naturalized borrowing, the researcher then serve into tables. The researcher became the main instrument of this research. The procedures in analyzing the data were collecting, classifying, analyzing, discussing, and reporting the data. The result of this research shows that there are two borrowing technique namely naturalized borrowing and pure borrowing are the types the researcher found in the novel and the researcher explained each word as a borrowing technique in the novel using literature meaning. Also, from the result it shows that the dominant type is represented by the naturalized borrowing. This is indicated in quantitative terms by 51,2% for the naturalized borrowing in contrast to 48,8% for the pure borrowing. The word “dad” from pure borrowing is the dominant word that has been found in the novel “Fangirl”. The borrowing technique is the easily technique that can help the teacher to teach translation to the student.
