Abstract

The direct compression method is one of the most popular tablet manufacturing methods because of its efficiency. However, direct compression requires excipients with good flow and compressibility properties. The requisite for materials with these properties can be overcome by using co-processed excipients. The co-processed excipient combines two or more types of excipients that aim to improve flow properties and compressibility. This study aims to determine the effect of differences in Avicel PH-102 (F1=10%; F2=15%) and Primogel (F3=4%; F4=8%) variations as disintegrants on the characteristics of co-processed excipients. The excipients include lactose as filler, Avicel PH-102 or primogel as a disintegrant, and PVP K-30 as a binder. The method of preparation co-processed excipient used was wet granulation. The results showed that the granule flow rate was F1=14.62 g/second, F2=11.30 g/second, F3=19.31 g/second, and F4=11.57 g/second. The angle of repose of the granules was F1=11.30˚, F2=19.24˚, F3=13.97˚, and F4=20.78˚. Compressibility and Hausner granule ratio F1=12% and 1.13; F2=17.81% and 1.21; F3= 7.12% and 1.07; and F4 = 16.51% and 1.19. Percentage of moisture content of granules F1=4%, F2=3.67%, F3=3%, and F4=3.67%. Percentage of fines granule F1 = 18.42%, F2 = 9.14%, F3 = 4.06%, and F4 = 2.65%. The evaluation results were statistically tested using the SPSS one-way ANOVA or Kruskall Wallis. All formulas in this study were able to produce co-processed excipients that met the requirements, and there were significant differences except for the water content parameter.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium that is the leading cause of infections of the skin, soft tissue, respiratory tract, bones, and joints. The use of traditional medicine is generally considered safer than the use of modern medicine. One of the plants in Indonesia that can be used as medicine is the Gonda plant (Sphenoclea zeylanica Gaertn). The phytochemical compounds in the gonda plant are saponins, flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids, and steroids, which have antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites and the antibacterial activity of 96% ethanol extract of Gonda plants with different concentration variations against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This research is quantitative research with an experimental research design. The results showed that the 96% ethanol extract of the gonda plant contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and alkaloids and showed antibacterial activity. The average inhibition zone concentration of the extract was 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively, 9.4 ± 0.19 mm, 12.56 ± 0.18 mm, 14.63 ± 0.30 mm, 17.45 ± 0.36 mm in the medium to strong category. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between the inhibition zone values of each concentration, where the increase in the inhibition zone value was directly proportional to the increase in the extract concentration. The extract with a concentration of 20% had an immense inhibition zone value of 17.45 mm.

Abstract

Inflammation is the mechanism of the body's defense by secreting inflammatory mediators, including bradykinin, prostaglandins, serotonin, and histamine, due to physical or chemical stimuli. Generally, inflammation initiates the body's response to the effect of damaged tissue, for example, in the wound healing process. In Usada Bali, dadap serep leaves were used for wound healing. The design of this study was a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The anti-inflammatory test of dadap serep leave extract cream used four groups, including KN (negative control), KP (positive control), KF1 (Formula 1 group), and KF2 (Formula 2 group), with a total of 24 rats. Tukey’s analysis showed a significant difference between KN and KP, KF1, and KF2 with significant values (0.031; 0.000; 0.000), respectively. There are significant differences in KP with KF1 and KF2 with significant values (0.050 and 0.021), respectively. In KF1 with KF2, there is no significant difference with the sig value. 0.975. From the research, it can be concluded that the cream of ethanol extract of dadap serep leaves with a concentration of 20% could provide an anti-inflammatory effect in carrageenan-induced rat models.

Abstract

Seaweed is a photosynthetic organism, thus a good source of pigment-producing. Pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries widely use chlorophyll pigments for their products. Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.) are widely grown seaweeds in the waters of Bali. Pre-extraction steps such as drying and solvent selection can affect pigment extraction. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of solvent selection in the extraction of chlorophyll in fresh and dried Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.). The solvents used were ethanol, methanol, and acetone. Estimation of chlorophyll content was carried out using UV-VIS spectrophotometry. Data were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the extraction of Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) on dry samples using acetone produced a total chlorophyll of 574.1 ± 33.2 g/g. Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.) extraction of fresh samples using methanol resulted in the highest total chlorophyll (10235.3 ± 50.3 g/g). In conclusion, drying and solvent selection affect the extraction of chlorophyll from Bulung Sangu (Gracilaria sp.) and Bulung Boni (Caulerpa sp.).

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease with a high mortality rate, and patient adherence to treatment is still low. Low patient adherence can be caused by several factors, including patient knowledge related to hypertension. In addition, medication adherence is a factor that can affect blood pressure control. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge, adherence, and blood pressure control in hypertensive patients. This research was conducted at Tk.II Udayana Hospital Denpasar with data collection time, namely February-April 2022. The research design was carried out cross-sectionally using a validated questionnaire. The level of patient knowledge was measured using the Hypertension Knowledge Level Scale (HK-LS) questionnaire, and the level of patient compliance was measured using the Probabilistic Medication Adherence Scale (ProMAS) questionnaire. The patient's blood pressure data has been seen through the patient's medical record in the past three months. The sampling technique in this study used a nonprobability sampling technique with a consecutive sampling approach. The data analysis used to determine the relationship between hypertension knowledge and adherence to taking medication is the Pearson correlation test. Differences in blood pressure control at various levels of adherence were tested with the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results of the analysis of 78 respondents showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and medication adherence (p=0.004; r=0.321). For drinking compliance with blood pressure control, there was no significant difference in blood pressure control values at various levels of drinking adherence (p=0.941). Thus knowledge related to hypertension affects medication adherence. However, various factors other than medication adherence are needed to produce reasonable blood pressure control.

Abstract

The existence of side effects from drugs used for hair loss treatment urges the need for safer alternatives, especially from natural ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness and safety of hair tonic from Usada Bali (containing Polycias scutellaria, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Trigonella foenum graecum, and Cananga odorata) in mice. Experimental animals were divided into four groups: negative control was given a carrier fluid, positive control was given hair tonic on the market, and the treatment group was given hair tonic with simplicia concentration of 10% and 20%. Hair length was measured on days 7 and 21 with the treatment given daily topically on the backs of shaved mice. The irritation test was carried out at 24 and 48 hours. The data obtained were tested statistically by ANOVA test followed by Tukey's test with 95% confidence level. The results showed that the hair tonic formula contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and triterpenoids. The irritation test did not show any irritation on the skin of the mice. The hair growth activity test of the herbal hair tonic formula combination of Polycias scutellaria leaf, Hibiscus tiliaceus leaf, Trigonella foenum graecum seed and Cananga odorata flower showed significantly faster hair growth than the negative control at both concentrations and not significantly different from the positive control. This hair tonic formula has the potential to be developed into a natural hair growth agent without irritation to the skin.

Abstract

The skin often exposed to sunlight and pollution requires treatment with products that protect it from UV radiation and free radicals. Avocado seeds are known to have the potential as a sunscreen and have good antioxidant activity. This study aims to prove the antioxidant and sunscreen activity of acetone avocado seed extract, produce a cream formula that functions as a sunscreen and antioxidant for the skin, and determine the correlation of extract concentration with the activity of avocado seed acetone extract sunscreen cream. Testing of sunscreen and antioxidant activity was carried out in vitro. The results showed that the SPF and IC50 values of the extract were 39.636 and 10.36 ppm, respectively. The SPF value of F1, F2, and F3 creams were 1.859 ± 0.152, 2.941 ± 0.065, and 3.629 ± 0.053, respectively. The SPF value of the three creams was significantly different (p<0.05), and there was a significant (p<0.001) and strong correlation between the concentration of the extract and the SPF value. The IC50 values of formula F1, F2, and F3 were 9.74 ppm, 7.02 ppm, and 6.86 ppm, respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that acetone extract from avocado seeds has a high level of sunscreen activity and very strong antioxidant activity. The cream has an SPF value under the category of low protection level and very strong antioxidant activity. A significant and strong correlation exists between the extract's concentration and the cream's SPF value.
