Abstract

The students usually make error on the use of grammar when they produce an English writing, also in writing descriptive text. It is due to the difference between Indonesia and English grammatical system. This research aims to find out the types of grammatical errors based on (Caroline Mei Lin Ho, 2005) theory of taxonomy grammatical errors, the most frequently error occurred, and the causes of errors made by the tenth grade students of MIPA 4 at SMAN 1 Tulungagung. The researcher uses qualitative method in order to obtain valid findings from 25 participants of tenth grade students. Based on the error analysis conducted, the researcher found that errors regarding sentence structure are the most dominant errors, with the biggest number of errors are in incomplete or fragmented sentences (36,20%). Then it is followed by errors regarding verb and verb groups with the biggest number of errors are in omission of suffix –s, -es, -ed, and -ing (20,69%). Then, it is followed by errors regarding preposition with the biggest number of errors are in inappropriate selection or usage of preposition (6,03%). Last, the errors regarding noun and noun groups with the biggest number of errors are in inappropriate selection of quantifier, article, determiner (2,58%). The findings show that the students have difficulties in using correct sentence structure, especially in incomplete or fragmented sentences. This problem may occur due to their lack understanding of grammatical rules.

Abstract

In an academic setting, writing is a skill which requires a high level of cognitive competencies. It means that as the students of university should prepare themselves for always being active learners to improve their level of cognitive competencies used for their writing skills. Nowadays, the range of technologies are available to be used in the class. To make the atmosphere in the class be more challenging and interesting, there are many lecturers use technology in their writing class. As one of example, utilizing technology in writing class, especially in providing the feedback for the students to enhance students’ written performance. This research focused on analyzing the implementation of online corrective feedback (via e-mail) in the writing class. This research was conducted in the second semester students of English Department. The researcher used qualitative method to conduct this research. There were three kinds of instruments used in this research. There were interview, observation, and questionnaire. The result of this research showed that the implementation of online corrective feedback was really effective for the students’ writing skills improvement. The lecturer’s activities, the students’ responses, and the online corrective feedback implementation itself were the factors that could not be separated in gaining a successful teaching and learning process in writing class.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to improve the students’ pronunciation ability by using AnimatedFilms. The subject of this research were the students of first semester of English Department of STKIP PGRI Tulungagung in the academic year of 2016/2017. This research used Classroom Action Research Method. The research was conducted in two cycles from Octoberuntil Decemberat the first semester students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Tulungagung.The research data were collected by using techniques of observation,interview, and test (pre-test and post-test). The research findings prove that Animated Films could improve the first semester students’ pronunciation ability. The result of the research implies that English teachers need to choose the appropriate media in teaching pronunciation. The appropriate media to teach pronunciation is animated films

Abstract

As a matter of fact, in today digital era, the advancement of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has shifted teaching-learning paradigm rapidly. The objective of the research is to develop a digital vocabulary coursebook (buku ajar) for Students of English language education department which can be applied on the smartphone. It is digitalized by using Adobe Flash CS6 Professional software with APK format. The smartphone that supports the application is android version 1.5 (cupcake) or above. The researchers design an educational RD research approach aimed at developing educational products, like curriculum, syllabus, textbooks, instructional media, etc. The subject of this research is the second semester of English language education department students of STKIP PGRI Trenggalek 2018/2019 academic year. The instruments used in this research are a questionnaire, interview, and observation. Those instruments of the data were analyzed in two different ways. The data collected by questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively, and data collected by observation and interview were analyzed qualitatively. Research findings show that the developed product which was based on students’ needs, the recent theory of vocabulary, RD, digitalizing and vocabulary coursebook which was also developed in five steps development resulted good responses from students in TLP of vocabulary subject in English language Education department. Mostly students agree that the digital book applied on their smart phone is indispensable necessity for today TLP which they may access it anywhere and anytime with ease. Besides, the product once also proves that digital material is more motivating, engaging and fun than the conventional one.

Abstract

Facebook has become one of the main communication media which people utilize to keep in contact with friends and acquaintances. Thus, this makes it an appealing medium of spoken-written language to identify trends of code mixing among them in informal social domains. This site popularity has aroused the researcher’s interest to choose it as a ground for this study. The aim of the study was to identify the form of code mixing which was frequently used by the member of Wanita Indonesia Bercadar (WIB) community. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data analysis of this research would be based on the observation of Facebook status and wall interaction. The data were analyzed using the observation checklist. Then, the data were analyzed based on the linguistic form of code mixing by Suwito’s theory. The results showed that word insertion was the most frequent inserted level of code mixing on Facebook among the member of Wanita Indonesia Bercadar (WIB) community.

Abstract

Reading ability is a wonderful ability which is only had by human. The writer can communicate with many people around the world through script. Problems appear when the students must read and comprehend the text of foreign language. It is also faced by students majoring in English education. They are also be accused to be able to teach reading to their future students.To test whether they understand the text they have read or not is by giving them some questions. The question may ask about the main idea or about the details of the text. From the collected data, most students from many grades are still get difficulty in comprehending the text.The statement of the problem of this study is “Is story mapping effective to teach reading to English department students at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung?” The objective of this study is to know whether story mapping effective to teach reading to English department students at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung. The design of this study is quasi experimental design, with one group pre-test and post-test design.The population of this study is students of reading 1 class. It consists of 52 students. This study uses 23 students as sample. The sampling of this study is simple random sampling. The technique of collecting is pre-test, which provides a measure on some attribute or characteristics that you assess for participant in an experimentalbefore they receive a treatment, treatment by using story mapping, and post-test, which is conducted after conducting the teaching through story mapping. The data of experimental research is analyzed by t-test formula. The hypotheses of this study are story mapping is not effective to teach reading to English department students at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung (H0) and story mapping is effective to teach reading to English department students at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung (Ha). After the researcher conducted the research, the researcher concludes that the student’s competence in reading ability before treatment was poor because the mean of the total score of 23 students was only 55.43. The student’s competence in reading ability after treatment is better than before given treatment because the mean of the total score of 23 students was  71.30. Based on the statistical using SPSS 16.0 shows that the significant value was 0.000 while significant level, the alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.

Abstract

English used for every reason at university for example such as English collaborated with culture and aspect that must be more important in daily uses as the English for specific things or purposes. All we know it as English for Specific Purposes or ESP. Such as in the development of teaching and learning English especially English in university or the most specific in ESP we need a media or book in their procedure and its implementation. And for its procedures every materials or book are definitely must be appropriate with the education aspect such as the philosophical aspects on its. On addition philosophical aspect is the main aspect on it that can be a hence to elaborated the material for the student need especially for ESP student. This research objective is to explain the appropriateness of the philosophical aspects in Business Basic I Book for ESP Student used in STKIP PGRI Tulungagung in terms of contents. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative, and it is taken from documents, audio-video recordings, transcripts, words, pictures, etc. This research is categorized as qualitative research design because this study is aimed to identify the book toward the criteria of good book used in STKIP PGRI Tulungagung. Based on the result and analysis of research that have been done, the writer can conclude that a book with the title “Business Basic I” was categories in an appropriate and a good book related to the description of the material. And for the interpretation toward the philosophical foundation aspects that consist six aspects such as Clarity, Consistency with the fact, Consistency with Experience, Consistency with other Beliefs, Utility and Simplicity it can be shown that this book run and construct by social reconstruction philosophy and structuralism philosophy. It can be shown from the several philosophical foundation aspect from the data collection result.

Abstract

This research investigates whether the students achieve better Writing skill after being taught using google classroom or not. The design of this research is quantitative research, which is concerned with hypothesis, formulation, testing and analysis of the relationship between two variables; dependent variable and independent variable. Both of variables are selected  and observed.Based on the statistical calculation using SPSS 16.0, the researcher gave interpretation to significant value. Because significant value 0.000 was smaller than significant level 0.05, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It means that there was significant effect after using Google classroom to teach writing. Thus, it can be concluded that by using Google classroom in teaching writing at the first semester at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung in the academic year of 2018/2019 is effective.As the conclusion, teaching writing by using Google classroom is more effective and interesting for the first semester students at STKIP PGRI Tulungagung in the academic year 2018/2019.  By using google classroom, students hopefully can increase their Writing skill. Teachers should give motivation to students so that they will be more interested in learning activity. The researcher hopes that this study will be useful for the further researchers to conduct the similar research that deals with the same media, and with the same or different research design to develop the teaching quality of writing skill by using Google classroom.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the four language skills that have been taught in English lesson. In this era, speaking ability, especially  to do public speaking in English is truly substantial in accordance with the era of globalization. In fact, it is known that the students of SMP 1 Tugu still have low ability in public speaking . It is due to some cases such as the lack of self confidence, the limited vocabulary and the feeling of being afraid to make mistake. The application of learning method focus on teacher center oriented is also being the main cause that have to be solved. Therefore, reseacher tries to design the lesson plan providing some challenging activities for students by applying learning method of “presentasi power point ” . it is intended to enhance the students’ achievement in speaking ability of procedure text. The learning design is hoped to be be able to create the meaningful, active, creative and joyful learning atmosphere. For students, the research can increase their ability  to produce procedure text orally. For teacher, it can improve the skill of using various learning  methods in class. The research is held based on  the research methology of Kemmis that consist of 4 steps, planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This research is designed in two cycles. The students’ achivement in cycle 1 shows that minimum score  hasn’t been achieved yet. The data shows that there are only 21 students passed of 29 , 72,41%. And there is an increasement in the second cycle that is 26 students passed, 89,66%. There is also an increasement of the  average score, 76,83 in cycle 1 and 81,38 in cycle 2. It means that the students achievement enhance 4,55 %. Thus, it can be inferred that ‘presentasi power point ” learning method can enhance the public speaking ability of procedure texts of the first semester students of SMP 1 Tugu, especially class IX G, in the year of 2017 2018.

Abstract

This report was a finished piece of research which was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ mastery to translate and their ability to write. It was hypothesized that the students with better mastery to translate can produce a better writing product. There were two test administered in this study. First test was translation test in which the students should translate text provided by the researcher. They should show their ability to translate from Indonesian into English. The second test was a writing test. In this test, the students should write a descriptive text. They should show how they write in acceptable English. From 24 students of the first semester of English Department STKIP PGRI Tulungagung, the coefficient of the correlation of Kendal Tau’s analysis was .552. It can be interpreted that there was a positive medium correlation between the variables. To sum it up, the translation mastery, according to this study, correlate well to the ability of writing. Students who have better mastery in writing usually have better ability to write. Therefore, we can assume that this study gives a new insight on the theories of translation mastery and writing ability.
