Abstract

In historical and scientific reviews, there is still a gap in studies that specifically and comprehensively compare stylistic developments in the two major Western and Arab traditions within a framework that is not only descriptive-historical, but also analytical-conceptual. To date, research on stylistics in the West and the Arab world has often been studied in a partial and separate manner, resulting in limited systematic exploration of the commonalities and profound differences between the two. This raises an important question: to what extent can the stylistic approaches and epistemological orientations of these two worlds mutually enrich each other in the context of analyzing literary and religious texts. The research reveals that Western stylistics emerged from classical Greek rhetoric and evolved into functional linguistic and semiotic approaches in the 20th century. In contrast, Arab stylistics originated from the discipline of balāghah, particularly concerning the expressive beauty of the Qur’an, and was later revitalized through modern Western stylistic theories. Using a qualitative method and literature review approach, the study finds that although the two traditions differ in their initial orientation, they now converge particularly in the context of literary and religious discourse analysis. This research recommends integrating both linguistic and aesthetic perspectives as a contribution to the global development of stylistic studies.

Abstract

This study examines the tragedy in Ameen Nayfeh's film 200 Meters (2020) using Roman Jakobson's semiotic communication model, namely code and message. This model emphasizes six factors of communication—addresser, addressee, message, context, code, and contact—which are interconnected in constructing meaning. This film tells the story of Mustafa, a Palestinian father who struggles to reunite with his family despite being separated by the Israeli separation wall. Through Jakobson's framework, the analysis shows how the sender (characters and director), receiver (audience), and messages about separation, injustice, and resilience are constructed and conveyed in a specific socio-political context. The study found that 200 Meters represents tragedy not only on a personal level, but also on a collective dimension, symbolizing the Palestinian people's experience of isolation and limited freedom.

Abstract

This study examines and compares the social-political moral criticism in Nizar Qabbani’s Hawāmish ‘alā Daftar al-Naksa and Victor Hugo’s Les Pauvres Gens, aiming to offer concrete evidence of East–West literary comparison that challenges Eurocentric frameworks. It emphasizes that literary value should not be judged solely by Western aesthetic standards, as each work is shaped by the poet’s cultural and historical context. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study interprets each poem by linking its language and themes to its socio-political background. Data were collected through library research and analyzed using Marxist Humanism. The research highlights the stylistic contrast between the two poets: Qabbani employs direct, sharp, and metaphorical language, while Hugo adopts a narrative and romantic tone. Both poems criticize authorities for social inequality, poverty, injustice, and political repression. Qabbani’s poem makes explicit accusations regarding the Arab world’s defeat—blaming moral decay, internal conflict, and political oppression. Hugo, in contrast, conveys implicit criticism of poverty and social inequality in France under the authoritarian rule of Napoleon III. Although written a century apart, the poems share a common message: literature can be a powerful instrument of social critique and change. The comparison reinforces that literary evaluation must consider diverse cultural perspectives rather than rely solely on Eurocentric standards.

Abstract

This study examines Mahmud Darwish’s poem “Qasidatu al-Ardh” (“The Poem of the Land”) through the lens of Ian Watt’s sociology of literature to understand how the text reflects and functions within the socio-political realities of Palestine. The study aims to (1) describe how the poem mirrors the social and political conditions of Palestinian life under occupation, (2) reveal the social values, nationalism, and ideological resistance expressed in the poem, and (3) explain the poem’s social functions as a medium of critique, collective consciousness, and ideological struggle. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the analysis focuses on close reading of the Arabic text supported by secondary sources on Darwish, Palestinian history, and sociological literary theory. The findings show that Darwish constructs a poetic landscape in which land, identity, memory, and the body become symbolic sites of conflict and resistance. These results demonstrate that poetry, especially within contexts of oppression, serves as both a mirror and an agent of social transformation.
