Abstract

This research analyzes the personal branding strategies of female politicians in mainstream media and social media using a semiotic analysis approach. The research aims to identify and analyze patterns, strategies, and effectiveness of female politicians' personal branding across various media platforms. Using qualitative methodology and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis model, thisstudy examines mainstream media and social media content during the period of January- December 2023. The results show significant differences in personal branding strategies between mainstream media and social media, with social media providing greater narrative control but demanding higher authenticity. Research findings reveal the persistence of gender bias in mainstream media while demonstrating how female politicians utilize social media to counter these narratives. This research provides theoretical contributions in developing digital semiotic analysis models and understanding intersectionality in political communication, as well as practical contributions in the form of strategic guidelines for female politicians in building effective personal brands in the digital era.

Abstract

This research aims to find out and explain the subjective experience and awareness of gay communication which is understood from gay symbolic communication behavior in Ambon City. The method used is a qualitative method with a phenomenological tradition.  The research subjects were 10 gay informants who were selected purposively with the criteria of being able to articulate their own lives through subjective communication experiences. Data analysis technique using phenomenological data analysis method. The research results found that 1). Gay communication behavior through their communication actions occurs through their mutual agreement (gay) both verbal and non-verbal (symbolic) communication. This is done in order to create social interaction and/or social relationships between them (gays), 2). Gay verbal communication behavior with friends in the community and with outside groups, shows a shared understanding of verbal messages such as; Akika which means me, Adinda which means there, Organda which means person, plenary which means perfect and so on, 3). The symbolic communication behavior of gays with friends and outside groups through slang with the characteristics of communication between them (gays), has been understood together through body gestures that look feminine, and greatly influences their actions towards other people, such as extended non-verbal (symbolic) messages. and has been used by friends outside the group such as; cyin (darling), eto (lying), racik gravy (talking excessively), krisdayanti (Christian), musdalifa (Islam) which are used by people's names, 4). The meaning of gay symbolic communication verbally and non-verbally is showing their true identity as gay, through fashion appearance (clothing), flashy colors and accessories that look very dominant. However, in gay communication with their families, there are gays who still hide themselves or hide their identity, so that their family does not know, but there are other gays who do not hide their identity when communicating with their family or with outside groups. And suggestions/recommendations are 1). It is hoped that the people of Ambon City can understand and know them (gays) and their community, through symbolic communication behavior, so that there are no misunderstandings in communicating with them (gays), 2). The Ambon City Government, or policy makers, can know and understand the characteristics, characteristics, and numbers of their (gay) communities, so that they can have information and their (gay) social status in Ambon City.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted society, particularly poor families who face greater challenges in maintaining their survival. This study aims to analyze the social adaptation strategies developed by poor families in facing the pandemic and identify factors influencing their social resilience. Using a systematic literature review method, this study analyzed 47 articles published between January 2020 and December 2023. The results identified six main adaptation strategies: income diversification (68%), social capital utilization (62%), expenditure reduction (85%), aid program utilization (73%), digital adaptation (45%), and residential relocation (28%). The effectiveness of adaptation strategies is influenced by internal factors (family characteristics) and external factors (system support). Social capital proved to be a crucial element in supporting poor families' resilience, although social restrictions during the pandemic presented new challenges in building and maintaining social networks. This study recommends developing comprehensive social protection programs, strengthening the digital capacity of poor families, and facilitating community social capital development to enhance the social resilience of poor families in facing crises.

Abstract

This article explores the application of Jurgen Habermas' critical communication theory in the context of digital media social movements. Using literature study and observation methods, this research analyzes how the principles of communication as praxis can be applied in the use of social media by social movements, focusing on a case study of the Black Lives Matter movement. The results of the discussion show that this movement has utilized social media as a discursive space to build critical awareness, spread alternative narratives, and facilitate open and inclusive dialogue, in accordance with Habermas' concept of ideal communication. However, the application of Habermas' theory also faces challenges, such as polarization, the spread of misinformation, and limited access. This article concludes that by creating a virtual public space that is inclusive and free from domination, digital media social movements can promote democratic values and social justice. However, more reflective and inclusive communication strategies, as well as cooperation with social media platforms, are needed to overcome these challenges. In the long run, the application of Habermas' theory can help create a more democratic digital environment and encourage transformative social praxis.
