Abstract

Background: Active participation in physical education (PE) is essential for students’ development yet remains challenging in many schools. Research Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of experiential learning approaches, including role-playing and interactive simulations, in enhancing students’ willingness and ability to actively participate in PE at Gabas Integrated School (GIS). Methods: This study utilised a one-group pretest-posttest design in which 34 Grade 9 GIS students participated. A researcher-made survey questionnaire patterned from the Students’ Participation Survey and the Motivation in Physical Education Survey and a checklist tool were used to gather data. Education experts reviewed the survey questionnaire to ensure content validity and conducted a pilot test. The collected data were analysed using Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP). Findings/Results: The study revealed that the students’s willingness to participate was initially moderately willing, which increased to extremely willing after the intervention. The student’s ability to participate improved from a participative rating to a highly participative rating after the intervention. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test further revealed significant differences between the students’ willingness and ability to participate before and after the intervention. Conclusion: These findings concluded that an experiential learning approach effectively enhances students’ active participation in terms of their willingness and ability to participate in PE classes. Thus, the Department of Education must encourage teachers to use ELA to transform students from passive spectators to active participants. Physical education teachers must also consider incorporating performance-based learning and real-life scenarios that allow students to apply their skills in meaningful contexts to their physical education teaching.
A content analysis on the challenges experienced in implementing technology in physical education in Indonesia

Abstract

Background: The lack of studies that specifically examines the challenges of implementing technology in physical education, with a content analysis approach using NVivo 12 Plus prompted this study to be carried out. Research Objective: This study identifies strategies to overcome these obstacles and provides recommendations for policymakers and educators. The aim is to increase the effectiveness of the learning process through more effective use of technology. This research is also encouraged because the related findings are one of the few studies that have been conducted, especially in Indonesia, so this can fill the research gap. Methods: This method combines qualitative research with content analysis. It used Nvivo 12 Plus software to discover and analyse the main themes. The units of analysis used are text search queries and case classification. Finding/Results: The findings of this study reveal that the employment of technological aids in physical education is beneficial as it allows greater access and flexibility in learning, enhances students’ motivation and participation, and offers innovative teaching-learning tools. Nonetheless, inside the Indonesian education sector, there are still identified issues regarding constrained access to technology in many places, considering gaps in the deployment of digital infrastructure and the development of students’ and educators’ digital skills. Conclusion: Improvements in telecommunications infrastructure, better digital literacy among the teaching and student populations, and opportunities for closer governmental cooperation with industry will be vital to addressing these hurdles more effectively. Although there are still some struggles, this research highlights how technology should be implemented in physical education in the digital age. This study helps identify and analyse the main challenges to developing strategies for improving technology use in physical education, especially among students and educators.
Integrating interactive video media in physical education: a study on critical thinking and learning motivation

Abstract

Background: At present, the process of physical education learning has incorporated the use of video-based interactive media, with the aim of optimising the achievement of learning outcomes. However, to the best of our knowledge, there remains a notable gap in research that explores the application of video-based interactive media in enhancing critical thinking and fostering greater interest in learning among students, particularly through mixed-method research. Research Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the impact of video-based interactive media on the development of critical thinking skills and the enhancement of students’ interest in learning physical education in junior high schools within Surabaya City. Methods: This study utilised a mixed-methods approach, with a research sample comprising 33 eighth-grade students who were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 17) using media-based learning and a control group (n = 16) employing traditional teaching methods. The research instruments included a critical thinking questionnaire, an interest in learning survey, and in-depth interviews to gather qualitative data. Finding/Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in students’ critical thinking skills in the experimental group; the average post-test score increased to 59.1 (p < 0.05), while the control group showed 55.0. Thus, students’ interest in learning increased to 95.6 (p < 0.05), while the control group increased to 98.1. Qualitative findings showed that students using video-based interactive media expressed greater interest and demonstrated increased critical thinking due to the interactive and flexible nature of visual presentations. However, challenges related to technology access, such as reliance on internet connectivity and network stability, were identified as limiting factors. Conclusion: Our research confirms that involving video-based interactive media learning is an effective way to change critical thinking skills and interest in learning among students. This study contributes important information for teachers so that they can use video-based interactive media learning programs continuously in the future.
A bibliometric analysis of research on physical activity and fitness among preschool children in Asia (2020-2024)

Abstract

Background: Physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) are essential for preschool children's development. However, rising childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles are concerning. A comprehensive analysis of the research landscape is necessary to inform better interventions and policies. Research Objectives: This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on physical activity and physical fitness among preschool children in Asia from 2020 to 2024. Methods: The analysis was based on publications from Scopus and Web of Science, focussing on keyword co-occurrence, citation analysis, and co-authorship networks. We used tools like ScientoPy and VOSviewer to assess key metrics such as the number of publications, citations, and influential contributors. Findings/Results: The study reveals significant trends, with a peak in research productivity in 2022, reflecting heightened global attention on early physical health. China, Japan, and Iran led contributions, with China dominating in publication volume. Notable researchers included Saeed Ghorbani and emerging contributors Ahmad Chaeroni and Amir Dana. Leading journals, such as the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and Frontiers in Public Health, were prominent sources. Conclusion: Despite a decline in productivity post-2022, PA and PF research for preschoolers remains important. These shifting trends provide opportunities for researchers to explore new areas or innovate approaches. Significant contributions from Asian researchers also indicate a geographic shift in the global research focus. This study also highlights the importance of physical activity in preschoolers and how trends in scientific publications can help policymakers formulate more effective interventions to improve children's fitness.
