Abstract

This paper provided the basic information of the phonological processes as the Coda Neutralization and Phonotactics of English Loans in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). The objectives of this paper were to represent the aspects of the coda neutralization in the sense of voiced obstruent segment becomes voiceless obstruent segment in the final syllable structure of the loanwords, and the consonant clusters break within the insertion of an extraneous segment in any location of the English Loans in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu. In the another framework, this paper revealed the phenomena of devoicing features of coda consonants and the grades of the additional segments in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu loanwords within the principles of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993). The central idea of this paper was to explore the process of conflicts between the candidates at the surface level and reflects the properties of the input candidate by the observation of the constraint rankings. In this study, it was propounded the effective formalities of the hierarchy of the constraint rankings and drew one of the best candidates as an optimal candidate out of the output candidates from English loans in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu. The groundwork of this paper was related to the significant aspects of the English loans that were adapted within the addition, insertion, or deletion of the segments in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu. In this paper, it was also determined the facts of the coda devoicing of the speech segments in terms of neutralization at the end of the syllable structure of English loans in Pilibhit Hindi-Urdu.

Abstract

The study was aimed to find and analyzed about how many idiom consist in Pride and Prejudice (2005) Movie, what are the meanings of idiom in Pride and Prejudice (2005). The data was taken from dialog line of the actor and actresses in the Pride and Prejudice (2005) where it was the script of the movie. Research design in this study was descriptive qualitative research. The technique used by the writer to collect the data was documentation. The finding showed that there are four classifications of idiom according to the Moon in Mabruroh (2015); those are transparent idioms, semi-transparent idioms, semi-opaque idioms, and opaque idioms. Transparent idioms are those idioms which are easy to comprehend its constituent meaning. Semi-transparent idioms are the idioms that usually have metaphorical meaning and their constituent parts have a little role in comprehending the whole meaning of the expression. Semi-opaque idioms are the group of idioms whose figurative meaning is not related to the meaning of their constituent words, in other words, the idiomatic expression is separated into two parts; a part with literal meaning, and the other part with a figurative meaning. The last is opaque idioms which is the idioms where the literal meaning of their parts have little to do with actual sense of idiom because it has cultural reference item. Transparent idioms that has been found in the movie is about 25 idioms, semi-transparent idioms is about 20 idioms, whether semi-opaque idioms are found about 17 idioms and the last, opaque idioms that has been found in the movie is about 18 idioms.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the ability of students to understand homophone in English. The research was qualitative descriptive research. The subject of the research was the seventh-semester students of the English Department of IAIN Langsa, academic year 2018/2019, that consisted of 32 students. The researchers used documentation as an instrument for collecting the data. The documentation was the result of the test given by a lecturer. The test given by the lecturer consisted of 20 questions about homophone in English. The question was in the form of phonetic transcription. The question consisted of two parts. In the first part, the students must mention two different words from a homophony sound. In the second part, the students must fill in the blank with a correct homophone word by relating to the pronunciation at the end of sentences. After conducting the research, the researchers found that 24 students got low mark because they were only able to answer one until ten questions correctly; 2 students got medium mark because they only answered 11 questions correctly, and six students got high mark because they can answer 12 until 17 questions correctly. Therefore, it can be said that the ability of students to understand homophone in English was not good enough. The problem faced by the students was that they still did not comprehend the concept of homophone in English. As a result of the test given by a lecturer, some students only knew that a homophone consisted of only one word, so they answered only one word, and some students also answered the question with three different words.

Abstract

This research was a quasi experimental research which took place in SMP Negeri 8 Langsa with the total number of population was 117 students and 56 of them were the sample from experimental class and controlled class. This research used pretest and posttest to collect the data. It also used some statistical formulas to analyze the data. It was found that there is a difference in the students’ achievement in reading comprehension between students taught Self Monitoring Approach Reading to Thinking (SMART) strategy and those without using Self Monitoring Approach Reading to Thinking (SMART) strategy. The result of the experimental group is 80.96 and the control group is 65.54 Self Monitoring Approach Reading to Thinking (SMART) strategy has many advantages in teaching reading comprehension. It makes the students more interesting and enjoying the lesson because it is supported by situation. Learning using Self Monitoring Approach Reading to Thinking (SMART) strategy that is accompanied as the background can stimulate, refresh, and support learning.

Abstract

The complexity of transferring language might mislead students as translators to mistranslate texts due to errors. Errors can be in the form of a message (meaning) or language, which also consists of grammar and lexicon. Transferring language also needs consideration of equivalent language transfer from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL). The present research identifies the error types, the source of errors, and the types of idiomatic translation that were done by English Department students of University of Islam Malang. The subjects of the research were 77 of the fifth semester students who took Translation course. The core data of this research were the students' translation works from English to bahasa Indonesia and unstructured interviews. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The data of the research were obtained from the result of the students' translation during the course. The data obtained also showed that more students commit errors on language than errors on message. The errors of language exist in the form of lexical aspect; they are conjunction, verb, and noun. In addition, the source of errors tends to happen because of the interlingual factors than the intralingual factors. The idiomatic transfer from the source language to the target language was done by shifting the meaning of idiom, instead of through word to word translation.

Abstract

This paper provides the basic information of the phonological networks and social identity about the heritage languages. The phonological networks convey the classification of the sound systems, while the social identity declares the difference among the native speakers of the heritage languages. The problem is investigated that how a particular speech segment created the variation among the speakers of the different languages in the speech communities. The objective of this paper is to determine the unique segments of the heritage languages and how these segments clear the social identity of the speakers in a particular speech community. The researcher collected the sample of primary and secondary data from the gadgets and the speakers of the heritage languages. The sample of data goes to the social characteristics of ages between twenty and forty of the respondents both male and female. The data are collected through observation, interview and the available literature of the heritage languages. For the collection of primary data, the high quality of the tape recorder is used and put approach to the mouth of the respondents for the recording at the time of interview. After the data collection, it is analysed base on the aspects of phonetics and phonology to find out the social identity of the respondents. In the result, it is found out that one particular speech segment represented the social identity of the speakers. In the framework of conclusion, it is represented that Urdu has different types of the speech segments covered all the processes of production, transmission, and perception.

Abstract

The notion of “textuality” encouraged Halliday and Hasan in 1976 to present their model of discourse analysis through raising questions about whether “cohesion” was a semantic concept or a structural relation, whether a text was a structural unit or not or even if there were semantic or structural relationships within a text. Cohesion was like the glue that unified the meaning within a text through binding the textual elements. Tackling relations of meaning and references in a text was often related to cohesion. A text can be cohesive if its units were bound together with explicit or implicit relations. Cohesion was often defined as the network of lexical, grammatical, and other relations which provide links between various parts of a text. The units of a cohesive text were not just a random set of sentences. Writing section on IELTS was commonly considered one of the most difficult parts of test. The test takers cannot even understand what to do with the tasks provided. They eventually wrote without knowing the expected direction. Therefore, there should be a fast way to equip students well to successfully cope with such hindrances. This research was an action research report of 10 students to make them better understand and answer writing tasks on IELTS test by employing probing techniques as one of test taking strategies. As the result, teaching material about cohesive devices, according to criteria and references to IELTS writing task 2, could help students to understand of their logic on writing proper materials.

Abstract

This research discussed about the slang words in Gap Year movie series and the word formation of the slang words which were found in the movie series. Slang itself was used by certain group or community, which could be produced by compounding, affixation, truncation, conversion, blending, neologism, etymology, borrowing, coinage, and multiple processes. This research used a qualitative method. In this research, the data were collected from Gap Year movie series in the form of British slangs.Then the data were checked by using dictionary, Oxford English Dictionaries Online and Etymology dictionaries online to make sure whether the data belonged to slang words or not and also to check the origin of the words. The data were also analyzed based on Plag and Yule’s theories in terms of etymology, borrowing, coinage, and multiple processes. After collecting the data, there were 30 slang words found in this movie series. The result of the research showed that the slangs were formed through compounding (8 data), affixation (5 data), truncation (1 data), blending (2 data), etymology (9 data), borrowing (1 data), coinage (2 data), and multiple process (2 data). Therefore, the most used of word formation process was etymology.

Abstract

The research authorized “Teaching Speaking with Multiple Intelligences Method” focus on observing the influence of application of Multiple Intelligences Method for affecting students’ speaking skill. The purpose of this study was the application of Multiple Intelligences which was dominant in teaching speaking. This study used experimental method with quasi- experimental as the design toward the students. There were two groups consisted of experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by implementing Multiple Intelligence method and the control group was taught by using usual technique of the teacher. The data were obtained through pre-test and post-test with T-test computation to analyze it. The research states that the implementation of Multiple Intelligences method was more effective in affect students’ speaking skill. It was proven by the result of statistical computation which uttered that t-value (18.54) was higher than t-table, t-value > t-table, (2.000, α = 0.05 and dk = 58). In conclusion, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted

Abstract

Using the Story Structure Approach to Increase Students. Reading Comprehension at the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Kejuruan Muda. This research was conducted on the Story Frame technique to improve students' awareness of reading. It was done in the Senior High School. This research used a quantitative approach with an experimental class and a control class needed. As the sample, there were 28 students in each experimental and control classes. Test and observation were used in the data collection technique. Then the result of the test will score by using analytic score and the researchers used "t-test" formula to calculated the data by comparing students' pre-test and post-test. This study found that students reading post-test score in experimental class using story frame strategy had a higher score of 76,67 higher than the student control class and a score post-test of 67,62, based on the formula, the difference in control class learning without Story Frame strategy. In addition, the Story Frame technique has made their reading comprehension more important. Based on these results, it concluded that the Story Frame technique could increase students' reading comprehension. Thus the hyphothesis was approved by the research method.
