Abstract

The inaugural speeches mark the beginning of a new term in office for a community or government leader, such as the president. This reaction must persuade the people to believe in the government and the programs will be enacted. This research aims at finding the rhetorical appeals of President Joe Biden's inaugural address on his inauguration as the 46th President of the United States. The research is based on Aristotle's theory called a rhetorical theory. The resercher employs descriptive qualitative as a methodology to analyze the data from the spoken utterances of the speech. The result shows that Joe Biden uses all of the Aristotelian rhetoric strategies in his inaugural address, which are: ethos, pathos, and logos. The data shows that Joe Biden uses pathos as 55% of his speech, followed by ethos 37%, and logos 8%.. Joe Biden skillfully used and implied Aristotle's rhetorical theory in his inauguration address to engage and build trust with the American people. From the analysis, the researcher has concluded that a good speaker can use all of the three elements of the rhetorical theory and imply them in the speech or writing.

Abstract

Interview is a popular means of gathering information in our society. However, there is little research on cross-cultural interviews which has been conducted. This research is a descriptive qualitative study which aims to examine Desi Anwar’s choice of positive politeness strategies in relation to her interviewees’ cultural backgrounds, i.e., Dewi Soekarno (Japanese) and Bill Gates (American). The interviews are transcribed and coded based on the positive politeness strategies used and the cultures of Japanese and American communication styles. The instrument used in analyzing the data is Excel Matrix. Findings show that the interview with Dewi Soekarno (Japanese interviewee) contains more positive politeness strategies than the interview with Bill Gates (American interviewee). The positive politeness strategies used in the interview with Dewi Soekarno are Exaggeration, Repetition, Including Both S and H, and also Compliments. This result is contradictory to Japanese and American communication styles, which Japanese do not prefer positive politeness; while Americans do. This study will shade some light on positive politeness used in cross-cultural interviews involving Japanese and American interviewees. Since both interviewees in this research are from different genders, it would be satisfactory if future research includes this aspect into consideration.

Abstract

Debaters are examined as students who possess advance English speaking performance compared to other English Department students. In real life, debaters are fighting by themself as autodidac learners to develop their speaking performance since there was no specific course provided for that purposes. This qualitative study aimed to explore the debaters’ strategy in developing their speaking performance using self-development approach. The participants were four selected debaters from Zawiyah English Club (ZEC), a students’ speaking community for preparing debaters in Langsa State Islamic Instititute (IAIN Langsa). The purposive sampling method was used in selecting the participants as only four debaters who have experienced debate contests were chosen. The descriptive qualitative approach was used with interview as research data collection instruments. In analyzing the data, thematic analysis was applied using Reinder’s cyclical nature of autonomous learning (2010). The resarchers found that all of the participants were aware of their learning needs and goals, they knew how to select their learning materials, and they spent about 1-2 hours per day to practice developing their speaking. They monitored their progress based on the mistakes they have made or their peer’s feedback in the ZEC club. From 8 stages suggested by Reinder (2010), almost all of the stages were followed by the participants as their learning strategies. It could be concluded that they are practicing their self-development strategy through implementing autonomous learning.

Abstract

The needs of English at the university level are not only focused on learning general English, but also on learning specific English that relates to academic studies or professional work. English for Specific Purposes is the term given to this particular English language (ESP). As a result, the goals of this study are to investigate the current implementation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten's Faculty of Economy and Islamic Business and determine whether the current implementation of ESP meets the needs of the students. This study's participants are 47 students from three different departments: Islamic Banking, Islamic Economy, and Sharia Insurance. The information was gathered using a questionnaire and an interview. The data was then qualitatively analyzed. The findings revealed that the current implementation of ESP is equally well-applied in all three departments; however, there were some issues with course materials and time allocation. Furthermore, the implementation of English class has met the needs of the students, particularly in improving their vocabulary and speaking skills. The findings suggest that lecturers should receive ESP training and that the time allocation for the ESP course be considered.

Abstract

Learning materials have essential roles in building learning environment—whether it becomes learner-centered, knowledge-centered, or assessment-centered. This study sought the trend of learning material development in basic speaking class. This study was qualitative in nature where the data quality was the key point measurement for further steps in finding the answer(s) to the research question. The data source was materials used for 14 meetings of Basic Conversation class. While the subject of this study was these materials, the object was the material criteria categorized based on Bransford’s et al. (2001) representation about learning material development in a classroom. The data analysis employed interactive analysis undergoing three steps which were data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results show that learner-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 2, Meeting 4, Meeting 5, Meeting 8, Meeting 9, and Meeting 10; knowledge-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 3, Meeting 6, and Meeting 7; and assessment-centeredness was majorly developed in Meeting 6 and Meeting 7. It is concluded that, first, the learning materials used for Basic Conversation class generally developed learner-centered environment as the focus was students’ interest and their background knowledge. Secondly, the materials also accentuated on knowledge-centeredness, though not as much as the first result. Last, there was also slight but still substantial development of assessment-centered environment. It implies that there can be found ample balance between these three types of learning centeredness to promote good learning environment.
