Abstract

This research aims to analyse the grammatical errors made by the students in writing the English essay. The author uses the types ofgrammar in academic writing proposed by Yakhontova (2003). The research design is descriptive qualitative, and the technique ofanalysing the data is content analysis. Based on the analysis, there are five grammatical errors made by students. The errors are spelling,noun, subject-verb agreement, punctuation and pronoun. The students made errors in spelling with the total error is 16% and made errors innoun with the total error is 16%. Furthermore, the students made errors in punctuation with the total error is 28 % and made errors inpronoun with the total error is 20 %. The students made errors in pronoun with the total error is 20 %. Punctuation is the most errorsmade by the students in writing the essay.

Abstract

Reading comprehension skill seems to be a complecated subject for students time to time. Teachers as the one who must train studentsto master the skill, keep struggling to utter the problem. This condition need teachers to find out probable solutions. One possiblesolution is by using specific strategy in taching, like the one called Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR). The purpose of thisresearch is to determine the effect of using Read, Cover, RCRR Strategy on students’ reading comprehension skill. The study isdesigned in quasi experimental method. The subjects of this research were students of English study program ofMuhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. In collecting data, researchers used a test. Result of the study shows that there was anincreasing scores on students’ reading comprehension skill who were taught by using RCRR. Based on the study done byresearchers, RCRR has brought positive effect on students reading comprehension skill. Therefore, the strategy is recommended to be used to teach reading comprehension in classes.

Abstract

The introduction of English to children as early as possible is important. Language learning is a communication skill in variouscommunication contexts. Learning English is essentially learning communication. Therefore, language learning is directed to improvethe learner's ability to communicate, whether oral or written. The most basic and most necessary language elements are: vocabulary,pronunciation, simple grammar, and simple conversation. This introduction can be done by learning, namely by using edutainmentapplications such as multimedia applications for learning English. By combining elements of education and entertainment which are theconcept of edutation and computers as tutorials and demonstrations, so that it can facilitate children's understanding of the materialpresented. . Data collection methods in this study are interviews, observation and literature study. The steps in completing theapplication and research are designing the application draft, making the application, testing, repairing and finally the application finishingprocess. The application developed consists of two compositions, namely learning and training and with the visualization method whichis engineering in images and animation, it is hoped that the children will be more motivated to learn English.

Abstract

The purpose of this reseach was to analyze the lecturers' metacognitive learning strategies in teaching English for young learner at English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu Academic year 2018/2019. The designof the research used descriptive qualitative method. The objects of this research were 60 students with open questionnaire. The instrument was check list form about metacognitive strategies skills by Anderson and Krathwohl. The researcher found that although not fully applied, with this metacognitive strategy students are more independent in learning and lecturers do not provide material repeatedly.The lecturers should consider several teaching strategies, especially metacognitive strategies.

Abstract

This research was purposed to find out the types of error and the sources of error made by the seventh semester English students of STKIP Budidaya Binjai in theyear 2017/2018. The researcher formulated the problems of this research were: “What types of error are made by students in Mood?” and “What sources of errors are made by students in Mood?”. The design of the research was a qualitative research. Based on the results of the data analysis, the findings of this research can be stated as follows: (1) The seventh semester English students of STKIP Budidaya Binjai made error in writing Mood of the sentences. (2) The types of error which students made were: Omission, Addition (double marking), Misformation and Misordering. The type of error which the most dominantly made by the students was error of Omission. (3) The sources of error which students made were: Interlingual Transfer, Intralingual Transfer, Context of Learning andCommunication Strategy. The source of error which the most dominantly made by the students was Communication strategy.

Abstract

The study is investigating the perceptions of students about learning using onlinemethod, the problems they encountered during e-learning process and theirstrategy to face e-learning method. The subject of the research was coming from 4students who were divided into third and fifth semester from 2 universities, suchas Bina Sarana Informatika and Muhammadiyah Tangerang University. Thedescriptive qualitative is used to gather the required data. Five questions areasked to get the data through online interview. Data shows that most of thestudents’ perceptions on online learning method is quite similar. Most of thestudents feel the same problems which relate to internet connection problems. Theproblem distracted their understanding of the materials given by the lecturers.Then, the strategy to encounter the problems are asking and discussing withfriends. Besides, they also find their own way through internet. Despite of beingeasy to find many ways to solve the problems, the offline method becomes theirmost favourable learning method.

Abstract

Speaking is considered as a necessary skill because of its essential role in facilitating students to master English. It enables students to express themselves creatively, imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. To master speaking ability, students must be trained to use English in communication orally. One of the approriate and comprehensive strategies for teaching speaking is Debate Tehnique. The objective of this study is to find out whether the students’ speaking skill improves after being taught through Debate Technique or not. The strategy applied in this study was the aspect of speaking and debate technique. This study was conducted by using Quantitative Research. This study was done at SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. There were 40 students taken as the sample in this study. The data were collected by giving speaking test to the students. The result of the test showed that the mean of score of the post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test that was from 70 become 78.75. This means students’ speaking skill was improved after being thought by using Debate Technique.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explain the types of grammatical errors made by the students in writing recount text, to explain what the causes of errors (omission, addition, misinformation, misordering) that students often do in writing recount text by using simple Past tense, to explain how to overcome the errors (omission, addition, misinformation, misordering) that students often do in the process of learning to write recount text by using simple past tense. This research used a qualitative design because this study deals with the data in form of numbers, and also to describe their past experiences in linguistic expression’s error that made by students. The place of research was at third grade students of SMU Negeri I Serdang Bedagai . The Population of the students are 56 students so that the researcher take the sample of the students are 28 which consist of boys and girls. In this case, the writer intended the specific data is the result of student error analysis in the use of simple past tense in writing recount text. The writer found a lot of errors in using the simple past tense in students’ recount writing, and then the writer made the classifying of the students’ error. After analyzing all the text, there were some findings that explained : the students made errors while they were learning about writing a recount text by using simple past tense. The errors divided into 4 errors they are : omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering. Based on the description of data analysis, there are 151 total number of errors that the third grade students of SMU Negeri I Serdang Bedagai already made, such as: 5 or (3,31%) omission errors which is made by the students, 91 or (60,26%) errors in addition, 51 or (33,77%) erors in misinformation and the last is 4 or (2,64%) errors in misordering. The writer concluded that the type of grammatical error done by the students is Simple Past Tense. It occured because of lack of understanding of students of simple past tense itself.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the significant difference before and after the students being treated by classroom interaction strategy in speaking class. The researcher used quantitative method and pre experimental design to analyze research problem. This study was conducted to the second grade students of SMAN 6 Binjai on 21th July until 5th August 2020. The data were collected through a speaking test, the test was consists of expressed argumentative text. Firstly, students had to express their opinions about the phenomenon surrounding without being given treatment. In this test, the researcher gave the topic about social media. Secondly, the students expressed their opinions after treatment. The treatment was the researcher teach the students how to expressing opinion, asking other people’s opinion and saying agreement. The test was given to measure the students’ speaking skill after treatment. The researcher investigated the data and collected the score pre- test and post-test based on the scoring system. In analyzing the data, the researcher calculated the data used t-test, the researcher checked the normality of the data using Liliefors test to find out whether the distribution of data was normal, and so the researcher used t-test to clarify whether or not his hypothesis is accepted. The research findings showed that was a difference before and after the students being treated classroom interaction in speaking class. The result of the data showed that = 8,374 was greater than = 2,924. It proved that the result of post-test was better than the result of pre-test. In order to find out the significance of the improvement between pre-test and post-test, t-test was applied. After having the test of significance, the result of pre-test showed that the average score of pre-test was 67. Whereas, the averages score of post-test were 73. From the data showed, the result of the post-test in speaking test was better than the result of pre-test. From the result, it could be concluded that there are the significance of the improvement from pretest and post-test Keywords: classroom interaction, speaking skill

Abstract

Speaking plays an important role in communication. This study is aimed at analysing teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking skill at SMP Negeri 2 Binjai. This study is conducted to show the types of teaching strategies in teaching speaking, the problems and solutions were faced by the teacher in learning process. This study is a qualitative study. The subject of the study is the teacher at SMP Negeri 2 Binjai. Interview was used in this study to collect the data. The technique of data analysis was interactive model analysis that is adopted from Yin, those are: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The result showed that question and answer strategy was the only technique used by the teacher in teaching speaking. Its became the appropriate strategy due to the number of students in the classroom and the limited time in English learning. The problem faced by teacher in teaching speaking was a huge number of students in a class made him hard to control their speaking ability. Then, as a foreign language in Indonesia English becomes hard to learn by the EFL learner due to the lack of vocabulary. The solution of the problems is giving more English practice to the English learners and create students in group discussion. Keywords: Teacher’s Strategies, Speaking.
