Abstract

This study departs from the problem of the dichotomy between positivistic rationalism and religious dogmatism, both of which reduce truth to absolute claims. It aims to formulate the position of “mystery” as an epistemic category within the concept of Critical Spiritualism developed by Ayu Utami. The research employs a qualitative approach based on library research with a descriptive-analytical method, combined with philosophical hermeneutic analysis of Utami’s major works, particularly Simple Miracles (2014), Anatomi Rasa (2019), and the essay Critical Spiritualism (2015). The findings reveal that “mystery” is not positioned as ignorance, but as an epistemic horizon that preserves the openness of knowledge and resists claims of totality. This concept gives rise to epistemic humility, which functions as a critique of both scientific and religious absolutism. The discussion shows that Critical Spiritualism operates as an integrative epistemological model that connects reason, experience, and the spiritual dimension in a dialogical manner without falling into relativism. In conclusion, truth within this framework is processual, partial, and open-ended, making it more relevant for contemporary plural societies. The contribution of this study lies in formulating mystery as a valid mode of knowledge while also serving as an ethical foundation to prevent ideological domination in claims of truth.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic and stylistic architecture of the song "Disenchanted" by the alternative rock band My Chemical Romance, utilizing the comprehensive framework proposed by Geoffrey Leech and Michael Short (1981/2007). While contemporary musicology frequently prioritizes acoustic performance, this paper treats modern lyrical texts as autonomous literary discourse. Employing a bottom-up methodology, the text is analyzed across six distinct linguistic strata: lexical choices, grammatical structures, figurative language, foregrounding mechanisms, phonological patterns, and cohesive devices. The empirical findings reveal a systematic reliance on stative and mental predicates (75% of total verbs) over dynamic actions, a calculated second-person pronominal dominance (50%) that serves as an identity-distancing tool, and striking semantic deviations that flatten human suffering into a mundane, failed theatrical production. Phonologically, dense clusters of sibilance create a cynical, whispering atmosphere that undercuts the typical energy of a rock anthem. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the emotional resonance of 2000s alternative rock is a meticulously patterned linguistic construct, proving that contemporary popular lyrics possess the structural complexity to warrant rigorous stylistic inquiry.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implications of digital communication in expanding the definition of text from linguistic and cultural studies perspectives, focusing on Eid al-Fitr greetings in 2026 as the object of analysis. Traditionally, text has been understood as a linear linguistic structure centered on verbal elements. However, the rapid development of digital technology has transformed communication practices into multimodal forms that integrate various semiotic resources, including visuals, colour, typography, layout, audio, and animation. This study employs a qualitative approach using Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to investigate how meaning is constructed through the interaction of these semiotic modes in digital greeting messages. The findings reveal that text can no longer be confined to a purely verbal entity but must be understood as a complex and dynamic semiotic ensemble. Meaning is produced through the orchestration of multiple modes that function simultaneously and interdependently. Visual elements, such as religious symbols, colour schemes, and compositional design, play a dominant role in shaping audience interpretation and emotional engagement, often preceding verbal processing. Additionally, the study highlights the significant role of users within digital ecosystems as active producers (prosumers) who creatively combine semiotic resources to express religious identity, cultural values, and social relationships. Furthermore, digital Eid greetings function not only as religious expressions but also as social practices that maintain and strengthen interpersonal connections in virtual spaces. This transformation indicates a broader paradigm shift in communication, where texts become participatory, multimodal, and context-dependent. Consequently, this study contributes theoretically to the redefinition of text in the digital era and emphasizes the importance of multimodal approaches in analyzing contemporary communication practices.
