Abstract

This article aims to explain the strategy of disseminating Islamic scholarship in the Nusantara archipelago. These strategies are described by referring to the Muslim intellectual figures or scholars involved, the Islamic scholarship developed, and the context of scientific development itself. This study uses a literature-based analysis of the historical development of Islamic scholarship from the 16th century to the 20th century. The finding of this article is that there are two main strategies carried out by Islamic scholars or intellectuals in the context of developing Islam in the archipelago, namely scholarly journey (rihlah ilmiah) and kitabah. Through these findings this article is expected to enrich the understanding of the working process and the formation of Islam Nusantara as epistemic community among Southeast Asia Muslim intellectuals, especially Indonesia, in these centuries.

Abstract

Diversity is a sociological fact of the Indonesian that cannot be denied. Diversity is the innate origin of the Indonesian nation, even long before the Indonesian nation-state was formed. It means, traditionally, the Indonesian people have actually been accustomed to diversity. But in the context of the modern Indonesian nation-state, diversity has meaning and socio-political demands that are far different from the ancient type of diversity. In this context, this article will discuss the political ideas of multiculturalism proposed by Will Kymlicka. Using the literature study this article discusses several views on multiculturalism, as well as the main points and general framework of Kymlicka’s multicultural political ideas and their position in the discourse on democracy and plural society. I argue that there are at least two dilemmas faced by theories of multiculturalism in looking at culture and cultural differences. First, an essentialist understanding of culture that presupposes that culture is a fixed, unchanging, and independent entity. Secondly the strong claims of university values in various understandings about multiculturalism is a challenge in itself, at the same time it indicates a long way to go in formulating theories to overcome the problem of cultural differences on the basis of the principle of liberalism.

Abstract

This article aims to introduce Roy Bhaskar's philosophical system known as critical realism. The focus will be directed to the three phases of development in the Roy Bhaskar philosophical system, by putting each phase as response to the problems in the philosophy of science and the mainstream Western philosophical tradition as well as social and humanitarian problems in general. This article was compiled using a literature-based analysis, by examining the Bhaskar’s works as well as its proponents and critics. Based on the analysis, I argue that Roy Bhaskar's philosophy provides a solid foundation of thinking for the social and human sciences, especially for emancipatory social sciences. Bhaskar’s critical realism restores the ontological dimension of science and subsequently the deep ontology dimension of our world, which is removed and ignored by mainstream Western philosophical traditions, both modern and contemporary. The commitment to the ontology of science and the deep ontology of the world produces a more adequate foundation for social and human sciences and the possibility for the realization of human self-emancipation projects.

Abstract

War, admittedly or not, has always been a "way out" for archaic society or modern society. As an inevitable thing to all form of culture, war have the same role and function of finding new equilibrium. Through this paper, the author tries to understand war through the cultural framework of the Baliem Valley community. Reading war from "the authentic" will make it easier for us to read various forms of war in various cultures and various periods. This article discusses the traditional war of the Baliem Community. War is something that cannot be separated in the whole life of the Baliem Valley Community. Without war, the affirmation of Baliem's human identity is incomplete. Social relations and kinship between the people of the Baliem Valley are strengthened by the existence of war. War connects the present and the past while placing each individual in a cosmic balance.

Abstract

The assumption that the state operates fully rational-formal is increasingly difficult to maintain. The state is much better seen not as a single solid and monolithic entity, but as a formation that continues to shape itself through various processes of internal and external power competition, which cannot be separated from kinship factors, social organizational patterns, and, in certain contexts, the history of colonialism. . Market penetration which has recently become increasingly dominant towards various sides of the state and the bureaucracy has added a new dimension and complexity to the relationship between citizens and the state. This paper intends to show the dynamics of these formalities by revealing the nature of power that underlies state formation. On the other hand, this paper will show how precarious citizens move between rationality as well as irrationality, formality and informality, to access the state space which is considered completely rational and increasingly has a market character.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the construction of Ariel Heryanto’s postmodernism ideas. Through in-depth observational studies on several articles, especially on the book entitled Identity and Pleasure: The Politics of Indonesian Screen Culture, this article concludes that post-modern epistemology is the foundation of Ariel’s analysis in seeing the development of popular culture in contemporary Indonesia. Ariel Heryanto used the postmodernism epistemology to see indications of popular culture. Indonesian identity which concerns to the meaning of being Indonesian Muslims, identity of minority (being Left and PKI), and expressions of choosing enjoyment while simultaneously affirming and building the identity in the context of middle-class Muslim fondness for K-Pop and K-Drama and other screen-based popular culture. Ariel Heryanto has succeeded in reading the phenomenon of a generation that try to redefine how to be a good Muslim, how to be a good citizen and at the same time remain a member of the global producer and consumer community.

Abstract

This paper discusses the body, sexuality, and power relations of women through dangdut koplo music. Dangdut music is actually a Malay crystallization of orchestra that occurs because the people have such a close relationship with the people that represents their aspirations and desires. Therefore, dangdut is in great demand and loved by people in Indonesia. Dangdut identities with a singer; women and gesture (goyangan), make dangdut an attractive arena in the battle about the body, sexuality, and power relations over the body that are owned by singers. A singer can still show the independence of her body instead of being a commodity object. She can make her body the subject. There she is, she alone has the power to control her own body. This can be seen from the saweran incident, which was the relationship between the singer and the audience on the stage who had high bargaining and negotiating methods towards his body.

Abstract

This study aims to see the relationship between smoking outcome expectancy and knowledge about the dangers of smoking in smokers with high, moderate, and low levels of addiction. Smoking outcome expectancy is a construct to explain the expectations a person gets from smoking behavior. This study involved 101 young adult smokers as respondents. Smoking outcome expectancy is measured by the SCQ-A (Smoking Consequences Questionnaire for Adults) measuring instrument compiled by Copeland, et al. (1995) adapted by Jeffries, et al. (2004). Knowledge about the dangers of smoking is measured by general knowledge of smoking compiled by Martini and Sulistyowati (2005). The measuring tool for categorizing the level of smoking dependence is the FTND (Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence) developed by Fagerstro¨m, et al. (1992). This study uses a correlational research design with the pearson correlation statistical processing method. There are two main results from this study. First, there is a non-significant relationship between positive smoking outcome expectancy and knowledge about the dangers of smoking in young adult smokers. Second, there is a significant relationship between the negative smoking outcome expectancy and knowledge about the dangers of smoking in young adult smokers. It is possible that knowledge about the dangers of smoking is not a major predictor of smoking behavior and the smoking outcome expectancy. For people who smoke with a high level of dependence, knowledge does not affect their behavior. Smoking behavior is expected to be a coping stress or physiological mechanism that the body needs.

Abstract

Sociologists are noble expertise, because sociologists are the ones who know, understand and master the niches of society both visible and invisible. Both the side of society which is located on the surface and in the deepest part are understood by sociologist. However, when we find in the field, sociology is still powerless. The task of prophecy and the caliphate that are inherent in sociologists is difficult to prove. The percentage of scientific involvement is mostly occupied by applied socio-political scientists. In fact, the age of this knowledge is quite long, Ibn Khaldun developed sociology in the 14th century, and August Comte gave the name Sociology in the 18th century. In Indonesian context, if it is calculated from Selo Soemardjan completing his studies from America in 1959, the age of sociology is 61 years old. Sociology has its jargon as the queen of the social sciences but, however, the question, is sociology really the queen? Even though Indonesian sociologist already have associations of both ISI (Indonesian Sociology Association) and APSSI (Indonesian Sociology Departement Association) that have been working quite actively, we have difficulty finding good models of sociologists in the professional field. The author realizes that the university has not succeeded in producing sociologists who can truly work without academic attributes; therefore, the purpose of this article is to understand and explain the dilemmas faced by sociology and Indonesian sociologists; then, unravel these convoluted problems and then propose steps to solve the problems. The author starts from the fundamental problems which are then linked to basic principles in sociology. Then, building a sociology house and sociological challenges. Finally, the writer proposes as a solution.
