As value of observation in the class room the students have score 6.0. This score is as a poor category. In this research the aim is to solve this problem until the students have a good score, while the standard curriculum is 6.5. This research aimed to improve the students’ reading comprehension at eleventh grade students of SMAN 10 Makassar. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages that is planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. Data were collected through test namely multiple choices and essay. The subject of research was 32 students of SMA Negeri 10 Makassar. Authentic material was obtained by internet, magazine and newspaper. The result of the study showed that there was improvement of students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using authentic materials. There was a significant improvement of the students’ reading ability, after getting the implementation of action among 2 cycles, and the finding was 18 students (56,25 %) in the first cycle and 28 students (87,5%) in the second cycle who can pass minimum completeness criteria (KKM). Therefore, the application of authentic materials in learning and teaching process can improve the students’ reading comprehension and has reached the instruction targeted in curriculum at that school. The students are more active to participate in learning reading by applying authentic materials.

Abstract ADFELPS Tests has been widely used as a predictive test to help stakeholders in making decisions in levelling Indonesian defence attachés’ English proficiency before they are assigned abroad. Despite the significant demands in examining the test for the purpose of informing the test users about the army officers’ English competence, little research has attempted to evaluate this standardized test. The present study, therefore, aimed to analyse the connection between the receptive and productive language skills of the test. Besides, it is also keen to explore whether test takers’ age, frequency of test-taking and length of study affect their scores and which part of the test is the most difficult to complete. Thirty military officers participated by submitting their ADFELPS Test scores and answered a designed questionnaire. IBM SPSS 2.5 software was used to perform a variety of analysis procedures such as the Pearson correlation analysis, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and an independent t-test procedure. It revealed a strong relationship between ADFELPS test score of language receptive skills (listening and reading) and the productive skills (speaking and writing) and listening is the dominant skill that correlates with all other language proficiency skills. Second, listening skill is particularly considered as the most difficult skill to acquire due to its complexity in the language learning process. Finally, participants’ age and their experiences of taking the test do not bring a significant impact on the improvement of ADFEPLS achievement score. In contrast, length of study preparation has helped test takers in increasing their test scores.

Considering these in mind, Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted by implementing Peer Tutor Strategy as part of cooperative learning. The data collection method was a learning achievement test. The data were analysed and explained in descriptive way. The results of the study revealed Peer Tutor Strategy can improve student learning achievement. It was proved by the improvement of students’ scores in two cycles. In the first cycle, the average score is 63.75 while in the second cycle is 80. From this significant improvement, the implementation of Peer Teaching Strategy is effective in improving students’ Indonesian Language ability.
