The concept of multiculturalism has expanded across countries borders and become an important topic in various discourses on cultural diversity. Moreover, many authors have related the concept to other concepts such as education so that many books and articles on multicultural education have been written recently. This article is not merely aimed at relating multiculturalism to Islamic education, but also giving critical analysis to its historical background and philosophical bases. To go further, I examine the opportunity to adopt multiculturalism in the point of view of Islamic doctrines and to implement it in Islamic education in Indonesia. In conclusion, multiculturalism is not only valid theologically and doctrinally, but also it is a must socially, culturally, and politically imperative. Therefore, the implementation of multiculturalism in various aspects of Islamic education must be performed smartly and carefully from the phase of input, process, and output to outcome

One weakness of akhlak teaching method applied in schools is its teacher centered assessment. Teachers feel as the most well-informed sources about students’ akhlak while teachers’ capability of knowing students’ akhlak comprehensively is limited. Teachers’ chance to meet face-to-face with students is only in the learning process so that teachers’ assessment can not show the real akhlak of their students. Teachers should involve other parties who often associate with students, especially their peers. In addition, assessment instrument used by the teachers should not be limited to examination only. Therefore, comprehensive akhlak assessment is needed. In this writing, I describe alternative method to assess students’ akhlak. With this method, we can assess batiniyah dimensions including willingness, conscience, value and attitude and also lahiriyah dimensions manifested in behaviors. This method applies self and peer assessment by involving students in inter and intra relations. Assessment instruments could be questionnaires, observation and portfolios in likert scale, semantic differential and thurstone scale.

Elucidating meaning of a term which later develops to be a concept need a comprehensive understanding and depth knowledge of the term. Genital (awrât, aurat) which arises to be a debatable concept needs reconsideration in its meaning which recently merely associated with the female rather than the male. For that reason, this writing, with its limitation, is trying to explore the comprehensive meaning of genital which is mentioned four times in the holy Qur’an in three verses—al-Ahzâb (33):13, al-Nûr (24): 58 and al-Nûr (24): 31. The exploration of meaning of the verses here will be focused on the meaning given by three experts in their books namely al-Qurthûbî, al-Marâghî and Quraish Shihab. However, for the aim of getting closer to the perfectness, this writing is also supported by the idea of some modern experts to see how genital is perceived according to the socio-culture of the society.

When people talk about erotism, the first thing in the mind of most people are nudity, sexuality, and vulgarity. It exploits mostly women’s sexual organs for sale or—in the proponents’ point of view—for the sake of art and freedom of expression. For this reason the moralists who are worried too much about morality, stand in the first line to fight against all kinds of expression intended to arouse sexual desire publicly. In the field of Islamic thought it has been becoming an endless debate between the Scholars of fiqh and the Islamic mysticism. The Scholars of fiqh accused the Gnostic practicioners of just making up the rules in religion (bid’ah) which contaminate the holiness of God through their erotic works of rhyming. On the other hand, the Sufi claims to look at the case from the essence rather than the physical appearance.

This time, pornography and erotic actions start to correlate into culture domain, where human beings become the subject as well as the object. Concept of culture claims the relationship between human interaction on society and culture as a result of them. Pornography and erotic actions are considered to be the representation of the products of human being activities in the forms of technology, pictures, idols, painting etc. All of them are then absorbed into culture. The opponents of freedom culture suggest that Indonesian people should be responsible to the development of Indonesian culture which is based on religions and eastern norms. The most dominant norms is Islamic teaching which is the religion of the majority of the citizen. Thus, Indonesia culture should be able to represent Islamic way of life which is based on al Quran and Sunnah. Pornography, which is against Islamic teaching should not be part of Indonesian culture.

Under age marriage is not a new case in Indonesia. This practice has been performed by many people either in villages or big cities for a long time. Its causes are diverse from economic factors, poor education, to superficial understanding of cultural and religious values. In addition to causing social, psychological and health problems, under age marriage brings about legal problems. For example, Syekh Puji and Ulfa’s marriage opens controversy areas between traditional, Islamic, national and international laws because each has different juridical perspectives. This fact causes at least two legal problems: first, harmony between one law and another; second, challenges for marital legislation in term of under age marriage. This writing is aimed to show the urgency of marital law review to answer legislative challenges toward Islamic law harmony with globalization era today.

It is undeniable that Islamic mysticism (tasawuf) has important contribution to Islamic civilization development. But, its complicated and ‘wilderness’ teaching makes it always becomes the object of criticism especially from the scholars of fiqh. Using historic-conceptual trace, this writing reveals the role of Islamic mysticism in developing Islamic civilization such as in philosophy, education, psychology, literature, dance and music. The fundamental concept of sufi wahdah al-Wujûd (the oneness of Being) gives contribution to solve problems related to modern science especially physic. Islamic mysticism like modern physic, teaches the awareness of unity and interrelationship among all things and events, occurrence of all phenomena in this universe as a manifestation of a basic unity. However, its intricate teachings which is difficult to accept by ordinary people frequently lead to misunderstanding. To make thing worst, some practitioners of Islamic mysticism commercialize the spiritual value of the Islamic mysticism for a little price.

In the midst of unstable democracy system, the idea about Islamic state or khilâfah, referring to some Muslim thinkers’ views, begins to get fresh wind. This writing presents al-Maududi’s view on Islamic state and khilâfah system centered in theo-democracy that is still unclear how to be implemented in the real practice especially in our situation now. Substantially, his basic ideas are acceptable, for example his thought of goals and functions of state establishment. However, his view that only men are eligible to be ‘amîr is difficult to accept for public today. Al-Maududi is one of Muslim scholars who is persevering in establishing an Islamic state based on al-Qur’an and Hadist. Basically, al-Maududi agrees any state form. However, he emphasizes the significance of theo-democracy state model as a characteristic of an Islamic state that is different from republic system that applies democracy in the West.

This paper tries to describe the debate on Islam and knowledge in contemporary Moslem thought regarding with two essential issues. Firstly, how to overcome the decline of knowledge in the Moslem society, secondly, how to deal with knowledge produced by Western civilization. Moslem intellectual response differently on the issues, especially in looking at the character of modern knowledge. Some perceive the knowledge as neutral and universal, so if the Moslem wants to take the knowledge, they have to follow the Western knowledge thoroughly. While the others argue that the knowledge is not neutral. It always depends on its maker, so the Moslem must be aware of Western knowledge. Above all, the contemporary of Moslem scholars realize that the only way to the second resurgence to get the golden age of Islam is through mastering the knowledge for the supremacy of knowledge is the main indicator of the supremacy of a civilization.
