Abstract

Abstract

This article tries to read Mecca and Medina messages by referring to Mahmud Muhammad Thaha’s, a Sudanese writer, term that is syariah evolution of Islamic calendar system. Mecca messages commanding to seeing the sky are theological, while Medina messages are more practical aspects from Mecca messages which are implemented in setting Islamic calendar not only through ru’yah bi al-fi’l, but also by hisab or computing based on syar’i pillars. The obeyed syar’i pillars represent that the human computing result should be considered a symbol of flexible Islamic teachings. Considering that, this writing points to a certain positioning, that Islamic calendar does not have only theological edge (Mecca messages), but also cultural one (Medina messages). As a theological calendar, Islamic calendar setting should be framed with adherence to syar’i pillars. As a cultural calendar, its arrangement should be designed by following human civilization advancement in astronomy.

Abstract

This article elaborates the conflict among the three fractions began from big dispute between Anshar and Abu Bakar and his associates (after Rasulullah’s death on 8 June 632). Abu Bakar solved the dispute through diplomacy and the jargon saying that al-a’immah min quraisy. However, the inter conflict in Muhajirin group, between Abu Bakar and Ali who had the same Quraisy root, was difficult to solve. The dispute between the two powers affected Muslim ummah seriously and greatly. Later on, each of them had faithful followers with their contradictory political thoughts based on naqly and aqly knowledge. In fact, their controversial political thoughts have rooted strongly and spread over the world. Therefore, it is relevant to reflect Rasulullah’s saying, related by Muslim, in Ijabah Mosque in Medina. In that hadist it is said that only two of three Rasulullah’s appeals for his ummah are accepted, the rest is rejected.

Abstract

Dakwah must be designed dynamically to be able to respond various problems. One of dakwah objects that should be specifically considered is intellectual community. They are educated people who are used to think critically, objectively and systematically. They prioritize brain works over muscle ones. To face them we need to prepare special dakwah approaches that move and lead their mind and direct their contaminated ideas, and dakwah subjects that are suitable to their intelligence and religious understanding. To meet such requirements, dakwah institutions should recruit preachers whose excellent capabilities of academic and social aspects. With academic capabilities, preachers can deliver dakwah by logic methods. In addition, they can construct dakwah materials based on logical arguments. With social capabilities, preachers find it easier to know dakwah objects’ characteristics. Therefore, preachers do not find any obstacle to enter into intellectual communities as their dakwah objects.

Abstract

In the Al-Qur’an, human desire for wealth to meet their needs is viewed as common (thabi‘i) and urgent (dlarûri). Wealth is considered a means for human to be closer to their Creator. In theological perspective, human relation to their fellows and nature is fundamental. The relation is divided into three kinds. First, cooperative relation is the relation between human and their fellows in which every human has the same right to use available natural resources. Second, consumptive relation is the relation between human and nature in which human is an authority for using natural resources and nature is an object. Third, responsible (mustakhlif) relation is the relation between human and their Creator in which human has to be responsible for using natural resources. Based on the relations, wealth for human is expected to be a means of strengthening human characters and leading to the supreme state beside God and human.

Abstract

In the field of Indonesian-Islam studies, Hooker’s ‘Indonesian Islam’ is a welcome contribution to the scholarship. Unlike other Western scholars who study Indonesian Islam through anthropology, Hooker through his publication tries to show us that Islam in contemporary Indonesia can be known from fatâwâ (pl. fatwa) that have been responding matters of Indonesian Muslim society, have colored them and have been followed by them. For this reason, Hooker chooses four main Indonesian fatwa-issuing institutions which have been responding to challenges of modernity. They are Persatuan Islam (Persis), Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) and further, they are called “sources” or sources of fatâwâ. As a focus of the study, Hooker takes the fatâwâ from 1920s to the 1990s, from the period of colonialism to independence, which encompass the vast political, social and legal changes of this period.

Abstract

This paper examines the origins of metaphysical thought of Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Rāzī. His metaphysics proposes five eternal principles which include (1) God (al-Bārī Subh\ānah), (2) universal soul (al-nafs al-kulliyah), (3) primeval matter (al-hayūla al-awwālah ), (4) absolute place (al-makan al-mutlaq), and (5) absolute time (al-zamān al-mutlaq). Some people argued that al-Rāzī took these ideas from other thinkers, or any teachings which were being developed at the time. Hence, these five principles are not his thought originally. Where does this doctrine come from? This library research utilizes the main data from al-Rāzī book entitled Rasā’il Falsafiyyah, particularly on the chapter of 'Al-Qudamā al-khamsah', and 'al-‘Ilm al-Ilāhi' and 'sīrah Falsafiyyah'. Other books that related to his thought are also explored to support the data in this research. This study proves that al-Rāzī develops these five concepts himself. He did not plagiarize others when writing his book as well formulating his view of metaphysic. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i2.796

Abstract

This paper attempts to provide a balanced and comprehensive reading of al-Būnī, who is mainly known as a scholar of Islamic magic, instead of a Sufi. This is because his name and works are widely known and referred in the Islamic world even into the present, including in Indonesia. To accomplish this agenda, this paper examines al-Būnī’s ideas on the science of letters across his works in order to determine how they are rooted in the principles of Islamic spiritualy. From the examination of al-Būnī’s science of letters, it can be seen that Islamic spirituality underlies his works: in the centrality of God and in sober Sufi devotions such as dhikr and fasting, as the complement of the magical materials. Furthermore, while he was a respectable Sufi at that time, he also wrote books in which he explored the Arabic letters primarily from an Islamic spirituality approach. By combining magical practice and Islamic spirituality, al-Būnī provided practical Sufism for the masses. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i2.814

Abstract

Isrâ’îliyyât, mostly, known as non-muslim based narration, particularly Jewish, which is later inserted into Islamic tradition and thoughts. Some mufassirs utilize this narration as a method of interpeting Qur’an and it unavoidably arises controversy between the classic muslim scholars and the modern one. However, the dispute between both groups should be carefully discussed and wisely selected. In doing so, their debate could contribute some positive and negative points for Islam and muslim developments.
