Abstract

The issue and reality of pornography is as old as the civilization of human beings. The sensitivity of pornography-porno actions in the context of Indonesian society with the biggest number of muslims population in the world is getting hotter along with the plan to regulate the pornography. Pro-cont of pornography is related to definition, criteria and limitation of pornography- porno actions. The polemic becomes more complicated when it is associated with economy, politics, religion, art, etc. Although it is not a major issue anymore—as it was few months ago—this writing aims at giving reflection on pornography dealing with Islamic law mainly on the aspect of law concluding (istinbat al-hukm) and aspect of profit and loss. The reflection of Islamic law on genitals and the reposition of knowledge of Islamic law as individual and social ethic controlled by society and State will be analyzed deeper in this writing.

Abstract

One of the Islamic doctrines that becomes methodological base for Muslims in the implementation of Islam is ijtihad. This concept, however, is considered valid when it is applied in zhanni areas, not qath¢i ones and Islamic theology. In Islamic terminology, terms syari’ah and fiqh are interesting to be discussed and reformed. Transformative-contextual Islamic thinking reconstruction is greatly needed so that syari’ah exists and is able to become modern constitution. One of the Islamic thinkers who tries to actualize ijtihad as a scientific paradigm in Islamic law reform is Abdullah al-Na’im. He tries to reform Islamic law in facing Western law development, especially in public Islamic law. This writing is constructed to see Al-Naim’s intellectual setting and how he sets ijtihad as scientific paradigm in Islamic law. Hopefully, this writing will give perspectives in facing modern problems.

Abstract

Discussing about pornography and erotic actions is mostly about the debate among religious defenders, cultural practitioners and activists of human rights. This is due to the fact that the three parties have their own point of views in perceiving the constitution of pornography and erotic actions. They have different perception especially from religion’s point of view. This writing—with no intention to interfere the debate—tries to understand pornography and erotic actions from religion and mental health. Religion in this context is not meant as the complicated or liberal term but rather on the normative-theological doctrine which intents to give both physical and mental healthy life. Islam claims to have a teaching which leads to mental health by forbidding immoral deeds such as pornography and erotic actions. Therefore, to support the religion perception on pornography and erotic actions, this writing reveals that pornography and erotic actions as ‘mental sickness’.

Abstract

One of the Islamic facets that attracts much attention and provokes debates among Muslim intellectuals is discourse of women’s position in classical Islamic doctrines: women’s position in private and public areas. Women are often seen as peripheral, second class citizen, marginal and victims of injustice constructed by society’s perceptions. Considering that, classic Muslim scholars are mainly blamed for women inequality because of their interpretation on Al-Qur’an and Hadis. Consequently, societies often view that women’s tasks are limited to domestic areas: kitchen, well, and bed. Therefore, Muslim thinkers should reinterpret Al-Qur’an and Hadis focusing on Islamic spirits that emphasize Islam as rahmat for all people, women and men, in all aspects of life.

Abstract

The 19th and 20th centuries were periods for main transformation in Muslim history: periods of degradation and conquest, independence and revolution, renaissance and reform. Toward the 19th century, world power moved from Muslim world to Europe. It was remarked by emerging power of British, France, Spain, Russia, Netherlands, Italy and Portuguese. They dominated Muslim societies in Asia, Africa, and Middle East in economic, military, politic and ideological aspects. Muslim societies’ responses to Europe domination were diverse from rejection and confrontation to emigration and non-cooperative attitudes of traditional Muslim. They planned reform, reconstructed Islamic thinking and beliefs, reformed theology and Islamic law, and emphasized Muslim’s self-esteem significance, unity and solidarity in facing cultural threats and Europe colonialism. However, not few secular Muslims and reformers, were proud and greatly imitated Europe civilization and cultures. They did secularization that ended khalifah system in order to reconstruct Muslim societies.

Abstract

Irfānī epistemology is one of the Islamic philosophical paradigms for understanding religious texts including the Qur'ānic texts. It maintains that the source of knowledge is intuition that puts emphasis on spiritual cultivation, not text or reason. Although this epistemology is criticized, it has been introduced Muslim scholars since the end of 4th and the beginning of 5th-century hijra as shown by Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān Sullāmī, Abū al-Ḥusayn Nūrī, Abū Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj and Ibn ‘Aṭā’ Allāh through their work Ḥaqā’iq al-Tafsīr. ‘Abd al-Karīm bin Hawazan Qushayrī, Ibn Sīnā, Ibn ‘Arabī, and Ṣadr al-Dīn Qunāwī, just to mention some, are the next generation of Muslim scholars who are concerned with it. This study examines the construction and the development of ‘irfānī epistemology as it is seen from the work of those scholars. It argues that ‘irfānī epistemology constitutes one important and fundamental Islamic episteme that serves to complete the other types of episteme, such as burhānī and bayānī. Spirituality in the Philosophical Thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr Fadhilah Khunaeni

Abstract

Spirituality for Seyyed Hossen Nasr is an inner reality that becomes a religious central in Islam. It is the esoteric dimension hidden in the reality of exoteric Islam. That view on spirituality brings Nasr to the philosophical thought that cannot be separated from religious metaphysical doctrine. Nasr argues that philosophy is more than just a ratio but also the activity of intellect that can reach the meta-cosmic nature to find the essence of truth namely the universal and eternal truth that lies behind the physical and relative truth. The philosophical efforts to find this truth are a combination of the optimizing potential of reason and intellectual intuition. Nasr refers to ḥikmah or wisdom as a kind of philosophy that combines logic and intellectual intuition. That philosophical view brings Nasr on a dualistic view of nature which not only has a cosmic dimension as such but also has a meta-cosmic dimension. This dualistic view is his fundamental reason in formulating the concept of metaphysical cosmology as a solution to the crisis of modern science that has caused a variety of ecological damage due to the secular vision. Abstract

Al-Mâturîdî has expertise in various Islamic sciences. In the Qur’anic exegesis, he has Ta’wîlât Ahl al-Sunnah or Ta’wîlât al-Qur’ân. This paper is going to explain the methodology of al-Mâturîdî’s exegesis. He clearly favors to combine the naqlî and ‘aqlî sources. Therefore, it can be identified as tafsîr bi al-izdiwâj (the exegesis which amalgamates tafsîr bi al-ma’tsûr with tafsîr bi al-ra’y). He is not an excessive commentator in using grammatical analysis to interpret the Qur’anic verses. He sometimes presents many styles of qirâ’ah (recitation of the Qur’an) without thorough elucidation. He almost never takes Isrâ’îliyyât (the Judeo-Christian traditions and tales) to interpret the Qur’anic verses. He prefers tawassuth (nonaligned and independent standpoint) when dealing with many different viewpoints among the theologians. He tends to follow the Hanafite school of thought in discussing the jurisprudential Qur’anic verses. He usually uses asbâb al-nuzûl (the causes of revelation) slackly.

Abstract

Berkelamin wanita bukanlah ‘pilihan’ hamba-Nya.

Abstract

The wisdom of the prophets in Ibn ‘Arabi’s Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam is deeply concerned with discovering how the prophets who are taken up in each chapter exemplify different facets of the deeper spiritual process of the divine-human relation. This article examines two particular fass and wisdom of Hūd and Muḥammad. The wisdom of Hud represents knowledge through the feet” (‘ilm al-rijl), the knowing that can only come through actually traveling through all the tests and lessons of the earthly human existence or sulūk, while the wisdom of Muḥammad defines the role of love and its multiple layers. Both are seen to be a spiritual intelligence of the prophets. Spiritual Intelligence empowers people to deal with and resolve life-world issues while demonstrating virtuous behaviour such as humility, compassion, gratitude, and wisdom. For Ibn ‘Arabī, spiritual intelligence is about discovering intrinsic distinctions between truth and illusion, and spiritual discernment is all about. Finally, through his particular work, Ibn ‘Arabī highlights and assumes a recurrent progression from habitual conditioning that human usually encounter to a greater depth and breadth of consciousness.
