Abstract

Farid Esack is an Islamic thinker from South Africa who proposes Liberation hermeneutics in comprehending the Qur’an from the perspective of Liberation Theology to realize justice. This article examines Esack’s hermeneutical method in interpreting Qur’an and analyses how he applies the spirit of liberation and justice as principles of Liberation Theology in his interpretation. This study shows that Esack’s hermeneutics differs from others because, as a liberation theologian, he puts liberative-praxis as the main objective of his liberation theology. His method does not only revolve around textual understanding but also push practical implication. He moves forward from praxis (experience) to texts and then goes back to experience. To him, interpretation must be able to encourage changes within society. Therefore, as the second feature of this method, in Esack’s hermeneutics, interpretation is not just scholarly speculative exercise which has no implication. It has a specific aim, namely is to establish a better life for society in which justice is a fundamental prerequisite. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i1.822

Abstract

The western philosophers like Karl Marx believe that society is ontologically understood in terms of physical dimension only while the Muslim philosophers such as al-Fārābī, Nasīr al-Dīn al-Tūsī, Ibn Khaldūn and Murtaḍā Muṭahharī argue that it consists of physical and metaphysical or spiritual aspects. The structure of a society along with its development and orientation can be seen and explained by its physical and metaphysical aspects. Moreover, the perfection of a society is not only based on the fulfilment of its physical needs but also on the establishment of intellectual and spiritual needs. This article aims to discuss society through Islamic philosophy’s perspective with the elaboration of social science, the reality of a society, the structure of an ideal society and its development and orientation. Abstract

The decline of Islamic science is seen as impacts of al-Gazālī’s criticism to philosophy and controversy surrounding the thought of al-Gazālī and Ibn Rushd. During the Golden Age in the medieval period, Muslim scholars and philosophers had been the world references for science and technology development. They lost this legacy because they embraced orthodoxy rather than rationality. Al-Gazālī had written a book called Tahāfut al-Falāsifah (The Collapse or Inconsistence of the Philosophers) which criticised Islamic philosophers especially Ibn Sīnā and Al-Fārābī. Later after the death of al-Gazālī, Ibn Rushd wrote book tahāfut al-tahāfut which commented on al-Gazālī’s book Tahāfut al-falāsifah. It was arguing over Muslims should advance in science and technology in this modern era as it was evident during the Golden Age Islamic Era (the 7th up to the 13th centuries) whereby Muslims were the world references in science and technology development. However, after the period Muslims abandoned rationality and have remained so up to the present. This situation caused Islamic thoughts to move from rationality to orthodoxy. Al-Gazālī has been considered as the cause of the decline in Islamic Thought as he critiqued Islamic philosophers especially Ibn Sīnā and al-Fārābī in his book Tahāfut al-Falāsifah. Later Ibn Rushd wrote book Tahāfut al-Tahāfut which commented on al-Gazālī’s book Tahāfut al-Falāsifah. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i1.804

Abstract

This paper examines Ibn Rushd’s theory of interpretation of the Qur’an by using a new methodology of hermeneutic developed by Khaleed Abou El Fadl. He proposes a theory of ‘negotiating hermeneutic’, in his work Speaking in The God’s Name: Islamic Law, Authority, and Womans. This theory advances the role of text (the Qur’an and hadith), authors (mufti, interpreter, special agent), and readers (Muslim society, common agent) in determining the objective of an authoritative text. These are three elements that must work together to determine meanings. Abou El Fadl’s hermeneutic theory develops the idea of autonomous and open texts. Therefore, the interpretation of the text does not always focus on locating the author’s desired intent. Building on El Fadl’s theory, the study aims to review Ibn Rushd’s authoritarian interpretation, which tends to push away any other understanding which is opposite to an interpreter’s ideology. Hence, this theory is contrary to another theory which states that there are no authoritative figures who can objectively understand the Qur’an. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i1.534

Abstract

The central issue in the study of classical Islamic theologians is closely linked with their surrounding context challenging them at the time. One of the basic problems is the incessant spread of Greek philosophy and elements of non Islamic teachings involved in the struggle of Islamic thought at the time, so that the theologians found it corrupting the Islamic faith. The study of Islamic theology at the time, therefore, was aimed at anticipating the destruction of Islamic values. Philosophical values of the movement should inspire contemporary theologians to resolve the various problems faced by the muslim communities. Therefore, contemporary study of Islamic theology should not dwell on the issues of “heavens” and be busy of “defending the God”. It should go further into the solution to the problem of the muslim people and human in general today.

This paper will elaborate aspects of conflict in two major streams in Islam, while also exposing the sides of the similarities between them. There are five issues targeted in this study, namely: the imāmah, the authenticity of the Qur'an, the khilāfah of Abū Bakr, the right to the khilāfah of ‘Ali ibn Abi Ṭālib, and the meaning of ahl al-bayt. The authors conclude that the differences in the two streams in the issues range from highly-diametric, put forward by the extreme sects, to the subtle differences and almost in tune, put forward by a moderate sects.

Abstract

One of the controversy-laden terms in the discourse of Islamic theology is ahl al-Kitab. Different ways of interpreting the term through textual and contextual exegesis of the Qur’an verses concerning it have colored the history of Muslim beliefs about other religion and religious communities. This paper aims to probe the controversies and arguments through revealing paradigms that underlies any views that differ from each other. Compromising the controversy was considered very important. Therefore, in the context the difference of textual and contextual interpretation of the term, the author conclude that both interpretations should be understood as mutual inclusion rather than two separate points in terms of mutual exclusion. Textual interpretation discovers basic, objective meaning of the term in Qur'an, while the contextual interpretation discovers its contextual meaning, both linguistic and socio-cultural.

Abstract

The earth inhabited by human now is facing global environmental crisis. To respond to and tackle the crisis, a new awareness to explore the principles of religion has emerged today, which was then called ecotheology, an integral environmental insight based on ethical-theological as well as ethical-anthropological dimensions. This paper is aimed at, on the one hand, exposing principles of Islamic ecotheology that are able to be guiding principles in managing the nature, and on the other hand, comparing them with the principles of modern environmental ethics of the environmentalist/ eco-thinkers. The author argues that there are three principles of Islamic ecotheology that are relevant as the basis of ethical management of nature now days, namely the principle of tawḥid (unity of all creation), the principle of āmanah-khalīfah (trustworthiness-moral leadership), and ākhirah (responsibility).

Abstract

Theological implications in social lives are still worth analyzed. This paper discusses the authentic image of man as I in the relationship with God and the world. These relationships affect the nature of the world and the world to change the nature of God. The implications of the inclusion of God in the world is God’s presence to the world and the world is affected God. Immanent God is the God who is present in every human being, every living being, and the universe. Every human being is unique and as I am in the uniqueness of God is present. In the directionality that God wanted man and the world become “like Him”, they are united with him; He is involved in the principles and ways of working people and the world. Even though God is in everything and everything is in God, it does not mean that everything is identical, or equal with God. God that is “above” and present “in” the world to make people as I was in the Lord.
