Abstract

Exercise is an activity that has many health benefits, including bone, heart, and muscle health. One of the proteins found to be increased after exercise was FGF23. FGF23 is one of the bone mineral regulators which previously served as an indicator for chronic kidney disease severity and cardiovascular morbidity. However, some studies have found no increase in FGF23 after exercise. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the effect of exercise on serum FGF23. This study is a literature review with a qualitative approach comparing previous studies related to exercise and FGF23. From 13 selected kinds of literature, serum FGF23 elevation was found on exercise for one day to three weeks and did not change after six weeks to 12 months of exercise. The conclusions of the study are serum FGF23 was found to be increased after one day to three weeks of exercise and serum FGF23 in human studies found to be increased after long-duration maximal-intensity exercise.

Abstract

This research aims to determine how the effect of combination of Moringa Leaf consumption with aerobic exercise against VO2Max and Lactate Threshold as ergogenic aids. 16 Taekwondo athletes are participated in this research. Participants are divided into 2 groups: the experimental group, which has been given the treatment of Moringa leaves and aerobic exercise, and the control group, which has been given an aerobic treatment only. The method used is experimental method with randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design. This research took 6 weeks length with aerobic exercise 4 days a week. Moringa leaves consumed at a dose of 2000mg during treatment. The data collection used a Balke Test to measure the VO2max and modified Conconi Test to measure the lactate threshold. The results of this research showed a significant increase in mean before and after treatment in both variables from each group (p <0.05). However, the value of the increase in both variables between the two groups did not show significant difference (p> 0.05). These results, it can be concluded that there is a significant increase of VO2Max and Lactate Threshold between pre test and post test in each group, but there is no significant difference from deviation of increase of between control and experiment group although the experimental group increase is higher than the control group.

Abstract

In Indonesia, it is estimated that there would be increasing in number of diabetes mellitus patients become 12 million cases in 2030. The expensive cost of conventional medications motivates people to find alternative medication. Bentonite is a natural clay which is a good absorbent and frequently called as healing clay for its potency in body detoxification. This study is an experimental research to prove bentonite which is a good absorbent and adsorbent in decreasing blood glucose concentration in diabetes mellitus. Subject of this research is 20 female Wistar rats which weigh 150–250 g. These subjects were divided into two groups: control group and bentonite group. Diabetes is induced by alloxan monohydrate 150mg/kg intraperitoneally, causing β cell necrosis in pancreas. Result of independent t-test showed that bentonite could significantly lower blood glucose levels with average value of 131.30 mg/dL (p=0.010). This concludes that bentonite canreduce blood glucose level in diabetic-induced rats.

Abstract

The majority of studies have found that aerobic exercise can reduce the increment of triglyceride postprandial in plasma. Therefore, the author is doing this research to know the difference of triglyceride concentration in plasma between-group who joint high impact exercise and group who joint body language exercise after given the same amount and dietary composition which had done high impact and body language exercise before. Twenty men (19-39 years old) did high impact or body language exercises for 1 hour. Two hours later, they were given dietary composition with carbohydrates 60% and fat 25%. Then the triglyceride postprandial concentrations were measured 3, 5, and 6 hours after the given dietary food. The result showed that the triglyceride concentration of high impact group was higher than body language group 3 hours after given dietary food (122.167 ± 17.11627 vs 111.67± 7.86554 mg/dL) and there was no difference between the high impact and body language group 5 hours (96.167 ± 7.25029 vs 94.0 ± 16.66133mg/dL) and 6 hours after given dietary food (77.5 ± 8.8261 vs 78.167 ± 14.27469 mg/dL).In conclusion, the triglyceride concentration of the high impact group was higher than the body language group 3 hours after given the same amount and dietary composition. But, there was no difference between triglycerides concentration of body language group and high impact group 5 and 6 hours after given the same amount and dietary composition which had done high impact and body language exercise before.

Abstract

VO2 max or oxygen consumption maximum value is a gold standard indicator towards cardiovascular and aerobic endurance because it refers to the maximum amount of oxygen used by an individual in one minute during maximum physical activity. The study's purpose was to see the correlation between duration spent in the fitness center and VO2 max value among adults. This study used the analytical study method, cross-sectional type. We chose the participant from members of Gold’s Gym fitness center at Cihampelas, aged 18-45 years old, with 3 months minimum of activity, and exercise frequency around three times per week. Theparticipants who had cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, serious physical injury, had already exercised during the time of observation, or professionally trained athletes were excluded. We used the Queen College step test for the instrument. There were 47 participants in this study. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was calculated to measure the correlation between duration spent and VO2 max, and the result was 0.77(95% CI 0.64; 0.85), p<0.001 which is categorized as a strong correlation. From this study, we found that with the increase of duration spent in the fitness center, the VO2 max level is also increasing, and vice versa. This result is supported by a study from the United States which finds a correlation between VO2max and performance times of recreational triathletes. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation between duration spent in the fitness center and VO2 max level among adults.

Abstract

Aerobic metabolism at the cellular level generates free radicals. Under normal conditions, there’s a balance between free radicals and endogenous antioxidants. An excessive amount of free radicals impair DNA, protein, fat, etc. The level of free radicals can be known by measuring plasma malondialdehyde level. Combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice as exogenous antioxidants supplementation expected to decrease free radicals level. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference of plasma MDA level during several time intervals on mice which are given and not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill for 20 minutes. The research method used in this study is an experimental laboratory study. The objects of this study are 40 mice (mus musculus), white-colored, male, weighting 25-30 grams, which is randomly chosen. The objects are divided into 2 groups, Group A: 20 mice (given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill) and group B: 20 mice (not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill). Group A is divided into 5 subgroups: A1 (measurement of plasma MDA level at 0 minutes after treadmill), A2 (measurement of plasma MDA level at 15 minutes after treadmill), and A3 (measurement of plasma MDA level at 30 minutes after treadmill), A4 (measurement of plasma MDA level at 60 minutes after treadmill), and A5 (measurement of plasma MDA level at 240 minutes after treadmill). The same procedures are employed for group B. Plasma MDA level measured after doing a physical activity using mice treadmill. The homogeneity of the result then was tested using Levene’s test and the normality of the result was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p>0.05). Further, the data were analyzed using an independent t-test (p≤0.05), one-way ANOVA (p≤0.05) then Duncan’s test were used. The results reveal significant lowering plasma MDA concentration in mice receiving a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity, which is measured during several time intervals: 0,15,30,60, and 240 minutes after physical activity than in mice not receiving a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity. The MDA level differences between groups that are given and not given combination of Brastagi’s orange and carrots juice before physical activity measured during several intervals are 11,44% (0,8920 vs 1,0071) measured 0 minutes after physical activity, 15,47% (0,7902 vs 0,9348) measured 15 minutes after physical activity, 14,42% (0,7473 vs 0,8732) measured 30 minutes after physical activity, 11,35% (0,6696 vs 0,7554) measured 60 minutes after physical activity, and 13,60% (0,5786 vs 0,6696) measured 240 minutes after physical activity. The conclusion of the study suggested that a combination of Brastagi’s orange and carrots juice supplementation has a lowering effect toward plasma MDA level measured during several time intervals.

Abstract

Under specific circumstances such as during aerobic predominant exercise, the production of free radicals increases and creates free radicals-endogen antioxidants imbalance. It causes oxidative stress. The level of oxidative stress can be recognized by measuring the level of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA). But the effect of physical activity and the effect of exogenous antioxidants supplementation is still not clearly known in the literature. Based on the background above, as a preliminary study, the writers conduct a study to investigate the plasma MDA level on mice which is given and not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill for 10,20, and 30 minutes. The research method used in this study is an experimental laboratory study. As objects of this study are 24 mice(mus musculus), white-colored, male, weighting 25-30 grams, which is randomly chosen. The objects are divided into 2 groups, Group A: 12 mice (given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill) and group B: 12 mice (not given a combination of Brastagi’s orangesand carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill). Group A is divided into 3 subgroups: A1 (doing treadmill for 10 minutes), A2 (doing treadmill for 20 minutes), and A3 (doing treadmill for 30 minutes). The same procedure is employed for group B. The analyzed data indicated a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice supplementation given to mice before physical activity, for 10,20, and 30 minutes caused lower plasma MDA levels than mice not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity. The differences are 38,44% (0,5277 vs 0,8571) (A1-B1); 37,96% (0,5866 vs 0,9455) (A2-B2); dan77,79% (0,8438 vs 1,6161) (A3-B3).The conclusion of the study suggested that a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice supplementation given to mice before physical activity for 10,20, and 30 minutes caused lower plasma MDA levels than mice not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity.
